An Honest Boy
hen people find something valuable and return it to

its owner, they are often given a reward. This is

because the person not only found what was lost but
also spent time to find its ow!e,{ or take it to the police station.
There was once a young boy who found a woman's purse in a
shopping center. Inside the purse there was some money and the
woman's driver's license.
Her name and address were
printed on the license, so
the boy knew where she
lived. That evening he went
to her house and knocked
-on
her door. When she
opened it, he said, "I found
your purse," and handed it
to her.
"Thank you very much," she said. She opened her purse and
took out all the money. She wanted to give the boy a small reward
but there were only $20 bilis in the purse and she thought that $20
was too much to give the boy. "I'm so sony," she said, "but I don't
have any small change to give you."
The boy said,'oThat's all right," and went away.
A few days later he found another woman's purse. It also had
her driver's license in it, so he knew where she lived. He went to
her house and said, "I found your purse," and handed it to her.
"Thank you very much," she said. She opened her purse and
took out her money.
"That's strange," she said. "Before I lost my purse I had a $100
bill and a $20 bill in it. Now I have a $100 bill, a $10 bill and two
$5 bills."

"Yes," the boy said, and smiled.

Hi Tommy,

How are you? l've been really busy. l've had tests and had
to study hard for the past three weeks. Then after the test,
there was the lnter-School Soccer Championship. I play for my
school, so I had to practice for an hour every day, l'm glad to
tell you that I passed my tests. Unfortunately, my team didn't
win the championship but I scored one of our two goals. We
lost 3:2. lt was a good game.
What have you been doing? Have you seen any good
movies or read any good books?
Have you bought any new computer games? I haven't
played any computer games for ages because I've been so
busy, But maybe I can go with my friend to play some video
games this weekend. I wish you could join us.
Write soon,
All the best,

O.K. l've been busy, too, though not with tests or sports. My family has moved to a new house. We now live outside of the city and
have a house with a garden. l've been helping Mom unpack
everything in the house. Now I have to help her in the garden.
There's a lot to do, so I won't have time to play computer games
or read books for weeks! However, I did go to the movies last
week and saw Dinosaur Land ///. I didn't think it was as good as
the other two. l'm a bit bored with dinosaurs now!
There's a golf course near where we live. lt isn't a private one.
Anyone can play there. I think I may take up golf when I have
more time. My uncle plays and he has promised to teach me.
I hope all is well

here was once a cat named Skipper. He was just an ordinary

cat who lived with his owners Linda and Gary

McManamoon in Texas, in the USA.

One evening Gary and Linda were at home watching television
after working hard all day in their family business.
Skipper was also in the room. He was playing with one of the toys
of Gary'and Linda's children. This
was a large clear ball with a small
hole. There were lots of little numbered plastic balls inside. It was
used to play the game Bingo. In
this game, the players each have
cards with numbers on them. The
person in charge of the game
shakes the big ball until a little ball
falls out of the hole. Players who
have this number on their cards can
mark it. The first player to mark all
the numbers on his or her card calls
out "Bingo!" and wins the game.
Skipper was happily playing
with the ball, and several numbers
had fallen out of it.
These numbers were 8, 11,16,25,26 and 42. Gary often played the
State Lottery. For thelottery, players have to choose six correct numbers. He wrote the numbers Skipper had shaken out of the plastic ball.
The next day Linda bought a lottery ticket that had allof these six
numbers.
These were the winning numbers of the lottery! Gary and Linda

won the huge prize of US$3720000!

They have given Skipper everything a cat could ever want, but they
don't know if he realizes what he did!

here was once an inventor who took another man to

court for copying his invention. He hired a top{awyer to
argue his case before a judge.
It was a difficult case. But the lawyer for the inventor had the
strongest arguments. She was able to show that the inventor
owned the product. In the end, the judge said the man had to pay
the inventor a large
amount of money.
The inventor was
very thankful to the
lawyer for doing such a
good job for him. He
wanted to give the
lawyer a special
reward, so he went to
the lawyer's office to

pay her and express his thanks.

He stood in front of the lawyer's desk and handed her a wallet.
It was a very good wallet made of the finest leather.
"Please accept this," the inventor said, "with my thanks for
everything you have done to help me."
The lawyer looked at the wallet and made a sour face. "I'm
sorry," she said, "but my fee is far, far more than this wallet. You
must pay me $1,000."
"I see," the inventor said. "You want $1,000 from me. Is that
right?"
"That's right," the lawyer said. "$1,000. And that's cheap for
all I've done for you."
"OK," the inventor said. "Give me back the wallet, please."
The lawyer gave the wallet back to the inventor. The inventor
opened the wallet. Inside there were five $1000 bills. He took out
four of them and then gave the wallet back to the lawyer.

meaning.
Street maps are divided into squares. These squares have letters and numbers. Every street is given a number and a letter.

This is called the map reference. For example, Smith Street is

,A.3. This means that you can find it on the map if you look for
the .A.3 square. Some streets are so long that they are in more
than one square.
To find a street, look for it in the index, then look for the letter and number on the map. Find the following streets and fill in

The Cure
ne morning,

when Tom Jones

woke up, he had
a bad headache and a sore
throat.
Tom went to the clinic.
There were a lot of people in
the waiting room, and Tom
had to wait a long time
before the doctor could see him. At last, the doctor was free, and
the nurse showed Tom into the doctor's room.
"Sit down, please," the doctor said, "and tell me your prob-

lem."
'oWell," Tom said, "I have a bad headache and a sore throat,
and I can't stop sneezing."
"You've just got a cold," the doctor said. "There's no cure for a
cold. I'm soffy, but I can't give you anything that will make it better. Just go home, drink a lot of fluids, and go to bed for a few
days."
Tom was not happy.
"There must be something you can give me, doctor," he said. "I
don't want to be like this for several days."
The doctor thought for a moment. Then he said, "O.K. Go
home and get into a hot bath. Stay in it for half an hour until the
water is cold. Then put on your swimming suit and run around the
streets until you are really cold. Then lie down on the grass."
Tom was surprised.
"But doctor," he said, "if I do what you are telling me to do,
I'11 get pneumonia. That's much more serious than an ordinary
cold."
' "Iknow," the doctoruuid, "but there's a cure for pneumonia."

Scrabble

crabble is a crossword
game. There is a board,
a bag f-1r11 of letter tiles,
l'
and smaltr raeks to put the tiles
_lli
on. Letters like Q, X, and Z are
H
il
not common in English words.
They ard worth more points than
common letters like E, S, and N.
For example, "E" is worth only I
point and there are many "E"
tiles. The letter "Q" is worth 5
points and there are only two "Q" tiles.
The game begins with all the letter tiles in abag. This way, the
players can't see the tiles. Each player takes seven tiles and puts
them on the rack in front of him or her. The players can't see each
other's tiles.
The Scrabble board has many squares. In turn, players try to
make words with their tiles and put them on the squares. The
words can only go up and down or left to right. The first player
puts down a word, and it must cover the star in the center of the
board. The player must take new tiles to replace the ones used to
make the word. The next player must make a word using the word
that is on the board.
To find the score, players add up the value of each tile in a
word. For example, the letters "S", "T", and "A" are each worth 1
point. So the word "sat" is worth 3 points. The pink and blue
squares have a special value, too. For example, if the "Q" tile is on
a trlple-letter square. then it would be l5 points, not just 5 points.
If the word "sat" is on a double-word square, then it is worth 6
points. The game continues until all the tiles have been used and
no player can make any new words on the board. The highest
score wins !

HiTommy,
Guess what? I got an

"A" on my English test! I always get

good grades in English now and l'm sure this is because of

our letters to each other. Most of the students in my class
don't use English at all outside of the classroom or in their
homework. lt's a foreign language for them. For me it has
become a second language. I read a lot in English as well as
write letters to you.
The weather has been very cold here but I love the snow
have a homemade sled that I take up the hill behind my
house. There is also a lake not far away and it freezes for
much of the winter. The ice is thick enough to skate on.

my birthday last week and I had a party with my

friends. I was sad that you weren't there. lt's great having
you as a pen pal but it would be even better if we met sometimes. Do you think we will ever meet? lf you could come to
France to visit me, my parents would really like it, and you
could stay with us. We'd have a great time together and I
could show you all the interesting places in Paris. The best
time to come is in the spring. The weather isn't too hot or
too cold then. Do you have any vacations in the spring?
Would Easter be a good time for you to come?

Hi Jean,
It was great

to hear from you.

l've been studying for my tests. Math is my weakest subject. You

are probably very good at it. I wish you lived closer, so you
could help me with my math homework.

l'm very lucky to have a pen pal who knows two lan$uages' I
often think how lucky I am that English is my first language' My
school has some classes for French and German, and some students are even learning Chinese. I think it would be hard to learn
a language like Chinese. They don't even use letters like we use
in English or Frenchl But some Chinese characters look cool. lt
would be fun to learn to draw them.
I really like calligraphy. ln an aft gallery in my town, there are
some Chinese pictures with calligraphy. They are great. I am
learning calligraphy in my spare time, using the English alphabet.

l'd really love to visit you, but the airJare is very expensive.
Maybe we should both save up for a trip and the first person to
save up the airfare makes the tripl I know my mom would really
like for you to stay with us.
The weather is getting colder, but it won't be really cold until
December, then we may have snow There isn't a lake or river
near where I live. There's only the sea and it never freezes here
in winter.

Well, I have to stop now. I have some math homework to do

before tomorrow lt will take me hours to finish!
Write soon.
Your friend,
Tommy

e wanted to study how students at our school

spend money. In order to study this, we made

some questions to ask our classmates. First, we
asked our classmates how much money they spent in one

month. Then we asked how much money they spent for things
like drinks, music, books, movies, computer games, and other
things. Our math teacher helped us make a graph of our classmates'answers.
Then yze thought it would be interesting to compare these
answers with our classmates'expenses from last year. It was a
little hard for them to remember how much they spent on some
things. We used their answers to make another graph for their
expenses last year.
Looking at the two graphs, it is easy to compare the expenses for the two years. Some of their expenses increased, but others decreased. This was a very interesting project for us.

A Budget
t's useful to know how much money we usually spend on
different things. Then, if we also know how much money
we will have, we can decide which things we should buy
now and which things we can go without or wait for.
Here is a student's weekly budget during the school year.

This student has only $50 a week to spend. Therefore, he must

spend less on some things or not have them at all. If he wants to
save on bus fares, he can walk to class. If he doesn't buy any
candy, he can save $5 a week. Or, he can save $3 if he has no soft
drinks. He can save on lunches if he brings his own.
He may be able to save on CDs by borrowing them from his
friends or buying them second-hand. He doesn't have to go to the
movies or restaurants.
Different people need or want different things, so their budgets
are different. Girls may not like computer games. They may want
to spend more money on clothes or jewelry.
For most of us, a weekly budget is only a little helpful. We
really need to have a monthly budget, or even a yearly'budget.
This is because we have to pay for some things only once a month
or once ayear. Clothes, textbooks, vacations, and so on are not
weekly expenses. They are monthly or yearly expenses.

The loan officer said, "We will have to take the car from you and

"Alright,I understand. Thank you," said Tim, and he gave the car

"Oh, yes," said the woman, "I did that last year when I went on

"I know," Tim smiled. "But I

ost Underground is a story about school children who

go on a trip to some caves. These caves were very large
and people could go into them only with a guide.
However, four children decided to explore on their own. They went
in the caves with a group, but left the group and walked down a
tunnel. They thought it would be fun to explore the caves alone'
Soon they came to a hole in the wall. They climbed through the
hole into another part of the cave. Then they decided to turn back
but they could not remember the way. They were lost in the caves.
When the guide led the other children out of the caves, he
counted them. He discovered that there were four children missing. He had to go back into the caves to try to find the missing
ildren
The children who were lost moved deeper and deeper into the
caves. The deeper they went, the more lost they became. They
were scared. They started shouting for help, but the guide didn't

hear them.
Soon they came to an underground river. They guessed that the
river must flow out of the caves into a bigger river. They decided

to try to swim out of the caves.

The water was very cold and deep, but the children kept on
swimming. For a long time, they swam in darkness, then they saw
light ahead of them. The river was flowing out of the caves into
the bigger river and the children were able to leave the
caves. They climbed out of
the river on to the riverbank.
