; n Lazy Man

ohn was Iazy.He didn't want

to work. He preferred to stay
at home and watch television.
One day, John's wife went to the
supermarket. She saw a "help wanted" sign in the supermarket window.
The supermarket needed someone to
put things on the shelves. She spoke
to the manager. She told him that her
husband didn't have a job but he was
very strong. She told him that John
would come to talk to him about the

job.
When she got home, she told her
husband about the job. John was
watching television while she was
talking to him. His wife was angry.
She turned off the television. She ordered him to go to the supermarket
to apply for the job. John didn't want his wife to be angry, so he went.,
On the way to the supermarket John thought what would happen if
the manager offered him a job. He wouldn't be able to stay home and
watch television. He would have to come to the supermarket every day
and put things on the shelves"
Then he had an idea. He decided to tell the manager that he had a
so,re shoulder so that he could not raise his arm above his head. He was
sure the manager wouldn't give him the job.,/
When he arrived at the supermarket, he told the manager that he
needed a job.
"Are you stron-e?" the manager asked.
John explained that he couldn't raise his arm above his head. John
told him that he had an accident at home while digging in the garden.
"How high can you raise your arm?" the manager asked.
John lifted his arm a little. "Only this high," he said.
"And how high could you raise it before the accident?" asked the
manager..

"This high," said John. And he lifted his arm above his head.

who had no manners.
His father and mother
tried to teach him manners but
they failed. His teachers tried
to teach him manners too, but
they had no success either. He
never said "please" or "thank
you," never stood in a line,
and always told people exactly
what he thought.
James' father was a businessman. One day, James'mother told James
that some important people were coming to dinner that night.
"They are your father's clients," she said. "Please try to have good
manners for them. Remember to say 'please' and 'thank you.' Make sure
your hands are clean and your hair is neatly combed. When they greet
you, say 'Hello Mr. and Mrs. Fox,' and don't talk with food in your
mouth when we are having dinner."
"Yes, Mom," said James.
When the visitors arrived, James' mother introduced them to him.
"James, this is Mr. and Mrs. Fox," she said.
Mr. and Mrs. Fox smiled at James and Mr. Fox said "Hello, James."
He shook hands with him. James' hands were very dirty and his hair was
very messy.
"Hi," said James. "Why is your name Fox? Do you have four legs
and a tail?"
His father heard him and frowned at him, but James took no notice.
When they were havin_s dinner James said to his mother, "These vegetables don't have enough salt on them." He leaned over the table to get
the salt shaker. He couldn't quite reach it, so he said to Mrs. Fox, "Pass
the salt." His mouth was full of food.
His mother heard him and was horrified.
"James," she whispered to him, "Pass the salt, please."
James looked at her. Then he said, "Wait your turn. I asked for it

Notice to the Staff: The management would like to thank the staff for
everyone's excellent work over the past few weeks. But there have been
c-omplaints about staff members taking extra long lunch hours. Please

take only one hour for lunch. Everyone working in the shop completed

their i.nventory sheets on time as ry-qgg_s:ed in our last memo. Great job!
Please remember when two employees are working in the shop, one
should be running the cash regfs.ler. The other should be working on the

] A Kind Grandmother
rs. Wallace had two grandchildren who lived just
around the corner from her house. They visited her
house every day after school. She was always happy
when her grandchildren visited her.
She was very good at making

things. One day she made a beautiful

doll's house and gave it to her grandchildren to play with.
The grandchildren wanted some
pet rabbits, and Mrs. Wallace said
that she could make a rabbit hutch to
keep them in. The children asked
their parents.
"Can we please have some pet
rabbits?" they asked.
"Where will you keep them?" thek father asked. "You need a hutch."
"Grandma already promised to make a hutch for them," the children said.
The father and mother talked about it and then they told the children they could have two rabbits when Grandma had finished building the hutch.
There was a lot to be done. Mrs. Wallace went to the hardware
store and bought everythin-e she needed: wood, wire, paint and nails.
She already had tools like a hammer and saw. She worked all day
while the children were at school. After school they came to watch
and help. It was almost finished.
The next day Mrs. Wallace finished the hutch and painted it. Then
she thou-eht about how to -set it to the children's house. It was too
large to put into her car.
"I know," she thou-eht. "I'11put it on the wheelbarrow and wheel it
there. It's not far."
And that is what she did.
On the way to the children's house, a man saw her and said
"That's very nice. Did you make it yourself?"
"Yes," she said. "I made it for my grandchildren."
"Really?" he said. "I thought it was for rabbits!"

oger was a thief, but he wasn't very clever. When he was in

school, he stole apples or oranges from the other children.
Sometimes he stole pencils or books from other children.

But he always got caught.

The teacher spoke to Roger's parents and they tried to stop him from
stealing things, but Roger wouldn't stop. He kept stealing.
When he was older, he began to steal from stores, but he was still
stupid. Once, he went into a store wearing the clothes he had stolen the
day before. They still had their price tags on them, and the store manager cailed the police. They warned him that he would go to jail if he
didn't stop stealing.
Then Roger decided to rob :r bank. He
planned everything.
He got some gloves
so that he would not
leave fingerprints, and
a mask so that no one
would recognize him.
"But what if they
recognize. m1, voice?"
he thought.
He decided to write his message on a piece of paper so that he
wouldn't need to speak. He found an old envelope and wrote "give me
all the money" on the back of it. He got a toy gun and went to the bank.
He put on his mask and his _sloves and sho.,r'ed the note to the teller. The
teller -ear e him all the monev. and Roger ran out of the bank and went
home.

It was the police.

They had come to arrest him for robbing the bank.
'oHow did you find me so quickl_v?" asked Roger.
"It was easy," said the police. "Your address was on the envelopel"
Ten minutes later he heard a knock on the door.

Ladies and gentlemen, we're pleased to welcome our most famous

injured, he would undoubtedlv have won a third Wimbledon
Championship. Billy is regarded by many as perhaps the finest player
ever in international tennis.
But of course Billy is much more than a tennis champion.
He is like :rn arnbassador for the sporl and for his country. He has
done ,ereat u'ork to help chlldren around the world, and his generosity
to children's charity funds is well known.
And of course, Bilh is the most successful graduate of our club. He
won the club championships when he rx,,as twelve-yes, at only twelve.
And Bill1, has not for-eotten where it all started. That's why he accepted
our invitation to speak to us tonight. We're proud to have played a
small part in Billy's success.
Won't you please give a big hand to our own Billy Rogersl

were not concerned about it too much. They decided to wait. They were

One day, while eating dinner, Jordan suddenly said "Mother,I think

Jonathan and Juiia were surprised. "You can talkl" said Julia.
"Of course I can talk," said Jordan. "After all, I am three years old."
"Why didn't you talk before?" asked Jonathan.

Hi Sarah and Toml Do you remember me? I'm Judith. I used to
live in number fifteen Dortling Street, just around the corner
from you. Just before I left, you gave me your e-mail address
but I haven't mailed you before now. When I first left, I went to
live with my mother because she was very ljl And needed
somebody to look after her, She has a sleeping disorder and if
she gets up at night she Sometimes forgets where she is. lt was
very difficult to look after her. She often had to go to the doctor.
My sister is looking after her now

was very fortunate to get a job in London, and that's where l'm
living now. lt's very interesting, although it has been very cold
this winter. I have a job with an insqlqnce comparly, working at
the help desk. The people have been very friendly to me and
helped me to feel at home here.
I

Of course I have visited all the main tourist attractions like

Westminster Abbey, London Bridge and Buckingham Palace. lt's
wonderful to see all the places that we uSed to read about and
see on television. l've alsb been to Paris, which is not far away,
and seen all the tourist attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the
Louvre. lt's very expensive to have a cup of coffee in a cafe in
Paris. You have to pay just to sit down.
That's enough about me, How are you doing? Are you still
working at the same places? Are you still living in the same
house?
I plan to come'back for a vacation next month and hope that I
can see you then. Please e-mail me and let me know if that is all
right with you.

It must be very interesting for you to work in London, even if it
is cold. We have never been to London, so we look forward to
hearing all about it. Do you know exactly what days yo*will be
here? You can stay at our place. We have a sfproom. lt will
be fun

We are still living in the same place and still doing the same
jobs as before. One funny thing did hadpen recently.
Tom had to stay in the hospital for a while. He decided it was
- too expensive to pay someone to clean our windows, so he
said he would do it himself. Of course, he fell off the Lqlfler and
broke his leg. He had to stay in the hospital for two days and
was on_g;!$gbes for two weeks. He is okay now. But our windows are still difi, because the window cleaner had an accident tool Hopefully we can find someone to clean our windows
before you come for a visit.

We have a fa_V"orto ask. A few years ago, my brother Sam went

to London for a vacation and when he came back he had some
presents for us. One of my presents was a small bottle of perfume called Myrtle Mist..Tom liked it very much. But we can't
buy that fJiirfume here. lf you see any, can you buy some for
me? We will pay you when you are here. I hope this is not too
much trouble.
We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon.

Car Hits School Bus

ayneyille, Wednesclay. School children travelling home by

bus from Payneviile Middle School yesterday saw a car hit
their bus. None of the children were hurt.
The accident happened when the driver of a red Carmobile, Mr. Fred
Johnstone, 68, became ill and collapsed onto the steering while driving.
His car then crashed into a white Nazpac. The driver of the Nazpac, Mr.
Rod Sinclair,35, ran into the school bus. Luckily, nobody was travelling
fast. so there were no injuries.
The driver of the bus, Mr. Sam Cook, stopped the bus immediately.
He asked the children not to leave the bus, and then he got out to see if
he could help anyone.
Mr. Sinclair was not huft and was trying to push his car to the side
of the road. No cars could pass the accident. and some other drivers got
out of their cars to help Mr. Sinclair.
Mr. Cook went to the red car and tried to help Mr. Johnstone. He
saw a burning cigarette on the floor of the car and put it out. Mr.
Johnstone did not answer when Mr. Cook asked him if he was all right.
Mr. Cook used his cell phone to call an ambulance.
The accident caused a large traffic jam, and it was difficult
for the ambulance to reach the place
where the accident happened. A
police officer came and talked
to some of the drivers in the
other cars. A tow truck removed
the white Nazpac and traffic
could move again.
The ambulance took Mr.
Johnstone to Payneville Hospital.
Mr. Johnstone is recovering in the
hospital and will soon be allowed
to go home. The children on the bus will be able to talk to a counselor
at school today.
