VOLUME & SURFACE AREAS

Formulae:
1. Cuboid: Let, Length = l, breadth = b and height = h units.
(i) Volume of cuboid = (1 b h) cubic units.
(ii) Whole surface of cuboid = 2 (lb + bh + lh) sq. units.
(iii) Diagonal of cuboid = l2 + b2 + h2 units.
2. Cube: Let each edge (or side) of a cube be a units. Then:
(i) Volume of the cube = a3 cubic units.
(ii) Whole surface of the cube = (6a2) units.
(iii) Diagonal of the cube = (3 a) units.
3. Cylinder: Let the radius of the base of a cylinder be r units and its height (or length) be h units. Then:
(i) Volume of the cylinder = (r2h) cu. units.
(ii) Curved surface area of the cylinder = (2 rh) sq. units.
(iii) Total surface area of the cylinder = (2rh + 2r2) sq. units.
4. Sphere: Let the radius of a sphere be r units. Then :
(i) Volume of the sphere : (4/3 r3) cu. units.
(ii) Surface area of the sphere = (4/3 r3) cu. units.
(iii) Volume of a hemi sphere (2/3 r3) cu.units.
(iv) Curved surface area of the hemisphere = (2 r2) sq. units.
(v) Whole surface area of the hemisphere = (3 r2) sq. units.
5. Cone: Let r be the radius of the base, h the height and l the slant height of a cone. Then:
(i) Slant height, l = h2 + r2.
(ii) Volume of the cone = (1/3 r2 h) cu. units.
(iii) Curved surface area of the cone :
= (rl) sq. units. = (r r2 + h2) sq. units.
(iv) Total surface area of the cone = (rl + r2) sq. units.
EXAMPLES
Ex. 1. Find the volume, surface area and the length of diagonal of a cuboid is 12 m long, 9 m broad and 8
m high.
Ex. 2. Find the length of the longest pole that can be placed in a room 5 m long, 4 m broad and 3 m high.
Ex. 3. The diagonal of a cube is 4 3 m. Find its volume and surface area.
Ex. 4. The surface area of a cube is 384 cm2. Find its volume.
Ex. 5. A wall 8 m long, 6 m high and 22.5 cm thick is made up of bricks each measuring 25 cm 11.25
6 cm. Find the number of bricks required to build the wall.
Ex. 6. Three cubes of sides 6 cm, 8 cm and 1 cm are melted ot form a new cube. Find the length of the
edge of the new cube.
Ex. 7. The capacity of a cylindrical tank is 6160 m3. If the radius of its base is 14 m, find the depth of the
tank.
Ex. 8. A powder tin has a square base with side 8 cm and height 14 cm. Another tin has a circular base
with diameter 8 cm and height 14 cm. Find the difference in their capacities.
Ex. 9. Find the volume and the surface area of a sphere of diameter 42 cm.
Ex. 10. Find the volume, curved surface area and the total surface area of hemisphere of raidus 21 cm.
Ex. 11. Find the volume, curved surface area and the total surface area of a right circular cylinder of
length 80 cm with diameter of the base 7 cm.
Ex. 12. A well with 14 m inside diameter is dug 8 m deep. The earth taken out of it has been evently spread
all around it to a width of 21 m to form an embarkment. Find the height of the embankment.
