IDENTIFICATION OF THE PREPARATION

ATTAQUE N2 or ACTIVATOR XB (code 10004)

ACTIVATOR / ETCH No. 3 (code: DPR 5003)
USE
This electrolyte is used at ambient temperature with the selective brush plating process for etching ferrous or cuprous
metals or light alloys before plating. It permits to eliminate impurities, oxides and various precipitates from the surface.
As the brush process is applied locally without immersion of the part, just where it is necessary, only small quantities of
solution are stored or used.

4 - FIRST AID MEASURES

CONTACT WITH SKIN
Take off contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash immediately with plenty of water.
CONTACT WITH EYES
Rinse immediately with plenty of water for approximately 10 minutes. In case of pain, redness or visual discomfort, call
an ophthalmologist.
INHALATION
Theoretically, not applicable. Under abnormal conditions of use causing considerable inhalation, remove the casualty
from the contaminated area, let him take a rest in a well-ventilated room and seek medical advice.
INGESTION
If the person is perfectly conscious, try to induce vomiting then give water to drink. Seek medical advice to decide to
transfer or not to a hospital.
PROTECTION OF THE FIRST-AIDERS
According to the situation, wear gloves, protective clothes and shoes, glasses, masks
________________________________________________________________________________________________
5 - FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA
Water spray, dry ice, powders
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA WHICH SHALL NOT BE USED
No contraindication.
SPECIFIC HAZARDS
Dangerous thermal decomposition products: decomposition of some components begins at 150C and gives notably
polyacids, unsaturated anhydrides and carbon oxides.
PROTECTION OF THE FIRE FIGHTERS
Because of the substances produced during thermal decomposition, use approved self-contained breathing equipment
and protective clothing.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Avoid contact with skin: wear at least gloves and preferably glasses.
ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS
Do not allow the product to be thrown away. Recover as much as possible for processing within the firm or by an
approved centre.
METHODS FOR CLEANING UP
With water to remove all non-recoverable product. Before throwing rinsing water, check the pH is between 5.5 and 8.5.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
7 - HANDLING AND STORAGE
HANDLING
Use as supplied. Close containers (in PE) tightly after use with the original cap. Do not re-use containers with another
product.
STORAGE
Store in a room away from alkaline products and powerful oxidising agents. Keep in original containers only, between 5
and 30C, if possible away from direct sunlight. The maximum recommended shelf life is three years from the date of
manufacture under normal conditions of storage.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION
EXPOSURE CONTROLS
TECHNICAL MEASURES
No drinking, eating or smoking on the workplace.
Maintain the premises and the workplace in a perfect state of cleanliness and clean them frequently.
Since the product is little concentrated in Formaldehyde, the values below are not reached.

PERSONAL PROTECTION
Provide a shower, a powerful tap and sink unit and an eye basin near the work place.
Respiratory protection: during brush electrolysis, provide as far as possible an inhaling of the sprays / vapours where
they are created and extraction out of the premises, or work in a ventilated room and wear if necessary a filtering
FFP3 mask (EN 149:2001 standard).
Hand protection: wear gloves (in latex or nitrile for example).
Eye protection: wear glasses with lateral protections. Do not wear contact lenses.
Skin protection: wear overalls and safety boots.

9 - PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
- Appearance: colourless to pale yellow liquid.
- Odour: odourless.
- pH: 4.4.
- Relative density: 1.13.
- Solubility: miscible in water
- Boiling point: approximately 100C.
- Crystallization / Melting point: - 4C.

________________________________________________________________________________________________
10 - STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
STABILITY
Good at ambient temperature with water evaporation for only risk.
Good in humidity and light (possible slight yellowing).
CONDITIONS TO AVOID
Decomposition of some constituents from 150C.
MATERIALS TO AVOID
Contact with bases and powerful oxidising agents (nitrates), in particular if the preparation has been accidentally
concentrated or dehydrated.
HAZARDOUS THERMAL DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS
Beginning of polyacids growth at around 150C and then notably of carbon oxides and unsaturated anhydrides.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
11 - TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
No data are available regarding the preparation. The evaluation of health hazards has been realised thanks to
directives 67/548/EC, 1999/45/EC and bibliographical data.
SKIN
The risk of skin allergy is probably very small because of the low concentration in formaldehyde.
EYE MUCOSA
Can become irritating in case of contact if rinsing with water is not immediately realized.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Slightly irritating if the electrolysis is performed without an inhaling of the sprays over the workplace.
Formaldehyde can cause respiratory allergies on some sensitive people.
IN CASE OF INGESTION
Possible gastrointestinal troubles if the swallowed quantity is large.
OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES: table n43, for formaldehyde (in France).
________________________________________________________________________________________________
12 - ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
There are no ecological data on the preparation.
In general, a pH lower than 5 is fatal.
ECOTOXICITY
The components are not considered as dangerous for the aquatic environment.
MOBILITY - PERSISTENCE AND DEGRADABILITY - BIOACCUMULATIVE POTENTIAL OTHER ADVERSE
EFFECTS
According to the available data, the compounds in this preparation are easily biodegradable and are not bioaccumulative.
