Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is usually used as a blending grape for adding color, tannin and
intensity of fruit flavor. It is not uncommon to find this grape as a single varietal wine, though fewer than
ten percent of U.S. producers make Petite Sirah. The grape can create a delicious and interesting wine
with dense, inky quality, blackberry flavor and a long smoky finish. In fact, there isnt anything petite
about it, except for its small berry diameter and cluster size. If you like big, bold, red wine, you will like
Petite Sirah. Check out PS, I Love You, an organization of Petite Sirah producers. They conduct tasting
events open to the public a fun way to experience this special varietal.
Syrah, known in Australia as Shiraz, is more frequently made as a single-varietal wine. The color is
less intense than Petite Sirah, though not without strong and mouthwatering flavor. Naturally peppery,
Syrah is a popular choice to serve with beef stews and flavorful
dishes made with game. Its geographic home has long been
associated with the north-south-running Rhne Valley, a controlled
wine appellation in the southeast section of France. Famous Syrahbased wines from the Rhne Valley are Cte Rtie and Hermitage,
representing Syrahs full potential as a forward, spicy wine of deep
ruby color.

FERRARI-CARANO
Enoteca
28
Don Carano says, Great wine begins in the vineyard, and he would know
as Ferrari-Carano started with a small, thirty-acre plot of grapes purchased in
1979 and today controls nineteen estate vineyards in six different appellations
totaling over 1,500 acres. What sets the winery apart to this day is the
insistence on using the same techniques today as they did back then: labor
intensive and unique irrigation and nutrient regimes, trellising systems and
canopy management, rootstock and clone combinations, and pruning and
cane selections for each vineyard site and each block within each vineyard in
Sonoma, Napa/Carneros and Mendocino counties. Equally, sustainable
farming is also utilized, recycling organic matter for use as mulch in the
vineyards, planting cover crops and other plant species to avoid soil erosion
and to add desirable nutrients back to the soil and attract desirable insects,
and integrating animals to naturally enhance biodiversity and nutrient
recycling.
Don Carano is also on the record as stating, The bottom line is quality
without compromise. This is a commitment we feel is reflected in every bottle
of our wine. The results are more than three dozen award-winning releases,
spanning multiple families, or tiers, of wines. The Classics include
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Reserve Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot
Noir, the Trsor red blend, and Zinfandel releases while the Vineyard Selects
bottlings present Cabernet, four different Chardonnays, and two different
Pinot Noirs. The Spirit of Italy wines include the Bella Luce white blend,
Pinot Grigio, and the Siena red blend; the PreVail series offers multiple block-
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
designated hillside Cabernet releases; and there are even a few sweet
red and white wines, too.
Options abound for trying these releases, and you even have two
choices of location to taste: you can visit Ferrari-Carano Vineyards
and Winery in Dry Creek Valley or taste the wines in Healdsburg at
Ferrari-Caranos Seasons of the Vineyard Wine Shop. The former site
is a spectacular Italianate hospitality center, named Villa Fiore, set
amidst the seventy-acre Dry Creek Valley estate vineyard. Visitors are
transported to the Italian countryside at the curved mahogany and
black granite wine tasting bar and its backdrop of large, arched
windows that overlook the estate, the surrounding mountains, and
the villa fountain pavilion. If youd like an in-depth look at the
Ferrari-Carano estate, reserve your spot for the appointment-required
free winery tour daily at 10 a.m. Hosted by friendly and
knowledgeable staff, visitors stroll through the gardens, see vineyards
up close, take a gander at the crush pad and in the winerys cellars
and tank rooms, view Don and Rhonda Caranos personal wine cellar,
and visit the tasting room.
It is the reservations-required private tastings in the PreVail Room,
though, offered Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.,
where the winery has pulled out all the stops. Pick of the Bunch
walks through an in-depth tasting of five wines of your choice while
Matchmaker is all about wine and food pairing made easy with
four wines and delicious, seasonal small bites. White Wine Lovers
tastes five wines with local cheeses, Passion for Pinot presents four
Anderson Valley and Russian River Valley Pinots with small bites, and
the King of Reds tastes four Cab-based wines and a delicious
dessert wine paired with chocolates and dried fruit. Cabernet
Terroir presents four wines from uniquely different vineyards in
Alexander Valley paired with an artisan charcuterie plate while
PreVail Verticals offers the latter paired with four mountain Cabs.
Last but not least, Scentiments tests your smell memory on five
wines. An email to privatetasting@ferrari-carano.com or a call to the
Hospitality Department are the easiest ways to partake in these wideranging options.

Weather
Fruit held up well during unseasonal hail storm
February and March 2014 rainfall was 11-17 inches, falling at
exactly the right time of the season to sooth drought concerns and
mitigate irrigation needs
2014 total rainfall is around 50-60% of normal
Napa Valleys microclimates proved themselves when on a single
day one part of the Valley had a heat spike, while another had a
frost alert
July 2014 average high temperature ranged from 80 degrees in
Carneros to 92 in Calistoga and Pope Valley right in the sweet
zone for fine wines
March June 2014 months were all 3-5 degrees higher than
average, getting the vines off to a strong start

Technology
While drones are not expected over the vineyards any time soon,
NVG noted that grape growers have been using aerial monitoring,
in the form of a cameras on airplanes, for decades
Increased remote vineyard monitoring via weather stations enables
growers to make faster decisions in regards to a specific vineyard or
part of a vineyard, further refining crop management practices
Optical sorters are becoming more sophisticated and are used to
continue to elevate quality
Drought conditions over the past few years have prompted many
growers to invest in more sophisticated technology, such as soil
moisture probes, sap flow sensors, and evapotranspiration
monitoring, to determine exactly when and how much to irrigate
NVGs ROOTSTOCK, a revolutionary conference designed for top
quality grape growers, vineyard and winery owners, and
winemakers worldwide, debuts November 13 at the Napa Expo
Fairgrounds. The conference provides access to high-level,
provocative seminars and industry experts, wine trials and tastings,
and an exclusive exhibition featuring over 120 of the industrys
highest quality viticulture and enology companies. A Concept Bar
will showcase curated, progressive ideas, methods, and equipment
designed to further quality and advance industry practices.

Napa Valleys New Modern Gastropub, The Farmer & The Fox
at Cairdean Estate, Scores a Bib Gourmand from Michelin Guide
The Farmer & The Fox, open just three months prior to Michelin
inspectors making their way through California wine country for the
2015 Michelin guide, is one of just two restaurants in Napa Valley
new to the guide this year. The Bib Gourmand, considered one of
the most coveted awards in the restaurant industry since 1997, is an
honor defined as Inspectors' Favorites for Good Value. These
restaurants offer two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or
less (exclusive of tax and gratuity) and are often frequented by locals
who regularly dine in neighborhood restaurants.
Fast Facts about Bib Gourmand in the 2015 Michelin Guide:
75 Restaurants in the entire San Francisco Bay Area
have received the Bib Gourmand
25% of Bib Gourmand winners are in Wine Country
(Napa or Sonoma)
13 Bay Area Restaurants are new to the list this year,
including The Farmer & The Fox
Other well-known dining destinations in San Francisco
with Bib Gourmands include Kokkari Estiatorio, A16,
Bar Tartine, Cotogna, Perbacco and Yank Sing
The restaurant combines contemporary farmhouse-style aesthetics
with beautiful custom finishes, fabrics and furnishings. Joseph
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
Humphrey, Executive Chef of The Farmer & The Fox and its
neighboring destination bakery, deli and culinary boutique is no
stranger to the Michelin Guide. In 2008 he received two Michelin
stars when he relaunched The Restaurant at Meadowood and was
awarded one Michelin star for each of the three years he served as
Executive Chef of Cavallo Point in Sausalito. At The Farmer & The
Fox he has designed an ingredient-driven menu that changes with
the season with a nod to the great gastropubs of the United
Kingdom. Its a huge honor to be included in the Michelin guide
this year, particularly at such a young restaurant. Im especially proud
of the kitchen and dining room team that put in the hard work every
day to make The Farmer & The Fox a great dining experience.

Best Winery in Napa award for 5 consecutive years in the Bay Area A-List.
2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

CELLARS OF SONOMA
Hippest Tasting Room & Wine Bar in Sonoma County
BY SUE STRAIGHT, THE WINE WENCH
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
Santa Rosas Railroad Square is now THE place to be for the 30-and-over-crowd
(younger folks are welcome too, of course). This historic strip, located about an hour
north of San Francisco, is shining much brighter these days, due in large part to
Cellars of Sonoma, arguably the hippest tasting room and wine bar in Sonoma County.
Im giving away my age here, but let me just say that if I lived in Santa Rosa,
Cellars of Sonoma would be my hangout. There are many reasons why this is so
lets start with the building, which was originally constructed in 1909. The lovingly
restored vintage back bar (the oldest bar in Sonoma County), brick walls, hardwood
floors and high ceilings practically ooze history. Take this vintage charm and mix in a
splash of contemporary chic, using a modern tasting bar, leather barstools, comfy
leather furniture, an upstairs lounge and a big screen TV and voila! Thats the vibe at
Cellars of Sonoma.
There is a lot of exciting stuff going on here live music from top local talent is
featured Thursday through Saturday; the friendly, knowledgeable staff provides
unbeatable concierge service and an amazing array of delicious, small-production
wines are poured daily. Check out TV Tuesday! Its the longest-running live webcast
about wine in the world! For the most part, its filmed at Cellars of Sonoma, but has
been known to move to Spring Training for the San Francisco Giants and other
remote locations to film.
Every December, Cellars of Sonoma hosts a gala winemaker event, where
winemakers from all of the featured wineries pour their wines and rub elbows with
the guests.
The wines of Cellars of Sonoma deserve their own paragraph, so here we go nine
micro wineries (most produce 2000 cases or less) share the space and their wines are
offered in flight format. Flights consist of a sampling from each of the nine vintners,
pre-set or customized, according to your taste and cost $15. Food and wine pairings
are available by appointment and cost $25. Wine club members and up to four of
their guests are entitled to a complimentary flight of four wines along with special
discounts and invitations to wine club-only events.

HISTORY
The Ferrer family has been growing wine grapes since the 1500s
and was the family behind La Freixeneda a 12th century farming
estate and well-established sparkling wine producers in Catalonia,
Spain near Barcelona. Jos Ferrers parents, Pedro Ferrer Bosch and
Dolores Sala Ferrer united two prominent Spanish wine families. The
result was Freixenet, which would eventually become the worlds
largest producer of sparkling wines in the world.
Jos, his wife Gloria and son Pedro came to California, purchased
a pasture in 1982 in Carneros an ideal Mediterranean climate and
planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. They incorporated their
Spanish winegrowing traditions and winemaking practices in creating
exceptional sparkling wines and estate varietal wines. Gloria Ferrer
Caves & Vineyards opened in 1986 as the first sparkling winery in
Carneros. Today, they own 335 prime acres of estate vineyards with
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.
ARCHITECTURE
The winery architecture blends California mission design and
Spanish-inspired architecture modeled on the original Ferrer familys
11th-century Catalonian farmhouse (masia) in the hills outside
Barcelona in Sant Sandurni dAnoia. Spanish features are included

SPARKLING WINES
Gloria Ferrer brings Old World handcrafted wine practices in
creating California-style sparkling wines. They planted Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay grapes in the Home Ranch and Circle Bar Ranch
estate vineyards, which produce the entire fruit for their sparkling
wines.
Their secret: carefully hand-harvesting their grapes at night,
carrying the grapes to the winery in small bins and gently pressing
the fruit in whole clusters using membrane presses in their mthode
champenoise (fermenting naturally in the bottle) and storing the wine
in cool underground caves. The winemaking team creates seven
diverse sparkling wines from over 50 individual wine lots as the
blending palette. Through the entire process from grape harvest,
pressing, blending, double fermentation, aging, bottling and
riddling it takes two to ten years to produce a great bottle of Gloria
Ferrer sparkling wine. The distinctive blends offer different flavors
and textures including Brut, Blanc de Noirs, Blanc de Blanc, Vintage
Prestige Cuves and VA de VI. The Royal Cuve is a tribute to the
King of Spain in honor of their Spanish heritage.
WINEMAKING TEAM
Executive Winemaker Bob Iantosca, Winemaker Steven Urberg
and V.P. of Production Mike Crumly move seamlessly from the
vineyard to the cellar producing consistent quality Gloria Ferrer
sparkling and still wines from vintage to vintage. Gloria Ferrer
remains a leader in sustainable farming practices including
biodiversity, soil health, water management, energy conservation and
in systematic approaches to improving environmental practices. Bob
said, The synergy between the winemaking and the winegrowing
teams is one of our greatest benefits. Mike and I have studied every
block, year after year, with the ability to choose the rootstocks,
VARIETALS
Gloria Ferrer began making still wine after producing sparkling
wine to demonstrate further the mature vines that produce modest
yields with full fruit expression. They purchased new land and
constructed vineyards specifically designated for estate varietal wine
grapes with heirloom vines, constructed new extended underground
caves, purchased fermentation tanks, barrels and a separate crush
pad.
The four estate Pinots produced are distinctly different due to sitespecific terroir. Gravel Knob and Rust Rock Terrace Pinot Noir are
two vineyard-designated wines produced from the 128-acre Circle
Bar Ranch vineyard and the 207-acre Home Ranch vineyard. The Jos
S. Ferrer Selection Pinot Noir is a blend of the best blocks from the
estate vineyards. The Carneros Pinot Noir is a blend from eleven
different soil types from varied terrain and different clones and
selections.
Carneros is a prime cool climate for producing their awardwinning Carneros Chardonnay with warm, sunny days and cool
nights. They planted the Chardonnay grapes in the lower sections of
the vineyard where prime fruit flavor is optimal.
For the Carneros Merlot, they selected the grapes south of the
winery in the Thimbleberry Block of the estate vineyards along the
hillside of a small valley with clay soil similar to those of Pomerol in
Bordeaux.
AWARD-WINNING WINES
Top sommeliers recognize Gloria Ferrer wines in worldwide
competitions awarding over 400 gold medals. Wine experts continue
to deliver stellar reviews with over 30 outstanding 90+ ratings in the
last five years. In June, The Wine Spectator gave 93 points to the
2008 Anniversary Cuve, 90 points to the 2003 Carneros Cuve, and
90 points to the Sonoma Brut. Wine & Spirits Magazine voted Gloria
Ferrer the 2013 Winery of the Year.
from $18 to $33, wine by the glass, from $6-$20 and bottles from
$22-$70. Enjoy complimentary house-made Gloria Almonds during
your wine tasting. A variety of artisan cheeses, favorite bites, and
