ABSTRACT
This application report gives an example of using the bq24075 charger and bq27500
fuel gauge together as a system solution for portable power devices.

The bq24075 is highly integrated single-cell Li-ion battery linear charger with system power path
management function targeted at space-limited portable applications. It has a SYSOFF input that allows
the user or fuel gauge to control the charge MOSFET on and off based on the bq27500 fuel gauge, or
system requirements. This is useful for factory programming where the battery is not installed; or, for
host-side fuel gauge where the open circuit voltage (OCV) has to be detected before the battery charging
and discharging. Connecting SYSOFF to VSS can turn the charge FET on for normal operation.
The bq27500/1 is a system-side Li-ion battery fuel gauge for data centric application devices such as
smart phones and digital still cameras. It uses the patented Impedance Track algorithm for fuel gauging;
and, provides information such as remaining battery capacity, state-of-charge, run-time to empty, battery
voltage, and temperature to system.
The bq27500/1 must operate in conjunction with other electronics in a system appliance, such as chargers
and other ICs, and sub circuits that draw appreciable power. After a battery is inserted into the system, an
accurate OCV can be measured before the battery charging or discharging. The OCV is used to help
determine the remaining battery capacity. When a battery is inserted into a system, the Impedance
Track algorithm requires that no charging of the battery takes place, and that any discharge is limited to
less than C/20these conditions are sufficient for the fuel gauge to take an accurate OCV reading. To
disable these functions, the BAT_GD pin is merely set high (floating output pulled high). Once an OCV
reading has been made, the BAT_GD pin is pulled low, thereby enabling battery charging or discharging.
This application report gives an example of using bq24075 and bq27500 together as a system solution for
battery management for portable power devices. The bq24075 evaluation module (EVM) and bq27500
EVM are used for this demonstration. Set the bq24075 EVM to 500mA input current limit by making JMP4
jumper to VSS and JMP5 jumper to HI (EN2=0 and EN1=1).
Figure 1 shows the two EVMs connected for battery charge test. Connect everything according to Figure 1
except the battery pack, and then connect the battery pack to simulate battery pack insertion. The OUT is
powered by input 5V before the battery pack is inserted. SYSOFF is pulled to 5V by a 200-k resistor and
diode from OUT when BAT_GD is high impedance before the battery pack is inserted. The bq27500 pulls
down BAT_GD after several seconds delay when the battery pack is inserted. SYSOFF is logic low which
enables charge FET turn on to charge the battery pack. As a result, charge current goes up to 480mA.
Because the input current limit is reached, bq24075 enters into DPM mode which regulates its OUT to
4.3V DPM voltage. The test result waveform is shown in Figure 2.
Figure 3 shows the two EVMs connected for battery discharge test. A 10- resistor was connected to
OUT and VSS as system load. When the battery pack is connected, BAT voltage goes up immediately. As
a result, SYSOFF is pulled to battery voltage by a 200-k resistor and diode from BAT. So, the internal
FET stays off until SYSOFF is pulled down by bq27500 after several seconds delay. After the internal FET
is turned on the battery pack starts to power the system and begins discharge. The test result waveform is
shown in Figure 4.
The complete schematic is shown in Figure 5.
Conclusion: bq24075 and bq27500 works correctly so that bq27500 can read OCV voltage first, before
any charge or discharge current occurs to the battery pack when it is inserted in a portable power system.
