Installation Guide EPLAN 5

Installation

Installation
Dear User,
The installation guide for EPLAN 5.50 will help you to install the system
fast and safely on your computer.

1.1

System Requirements for EPLAN

The possibility to run EPLAN 5.50 depends on the following conditions:

Hardware
The following hardware prerequisites must be guaranteed:
The computer used must be equipped with a current X68 processor,
for example AMD Athlon or Athlon XP or Intel Pentium 3 or 4.
The main memory should at least be 128 MB. Please note that Windows NT 4.0 does not reach its maximum performance speed below
64 MB! We recommend a memory space of at least 512 MB.
The installation requires a memory space of at least 100 MB. To be
able to effectively work with EPLAN 5, there should, however, be
free disk space of at least 2 GB on your hard disk.
We recommend a single-screen or a two-screen system with a 1024 x
768 pixel resolution per screen.
Each printer running under Windows NT can be used. It should,
however, have at least 4 to 6 MB memory, so that large graphics can
also be output in an adequate time.

To ensure the trouble-free operation of EPLAN 5.50 in Novell networks

we recommend using the latest version of the Novell IntranetWare Client
for Microsoft Windows.

Installation

1.2

Installing EPLAN
By means of the installation program, the programs and files are copied
into the designated folders so that EPLAN 5.50 can be started once the
installation has been completed.
Before starting the installation procedure, you should make sure to carry
out a data backup of your hard drive. Otherwise, a power outage or
hardware failures may result in your data being lost.
Notes:
EPLAN 5.50 is a Windows program and is exclusively delivered on
CD ROM.
When you are using Windows NT / 2000 / XP or want to install
EPLAN in a network, all following steps require that you have
administration rights on the local and on the target drive during the
entire installation process.
The installation starts automatically when first inserting the CD ROM.
The installation program can also be started by clicking on the
SETUP.EXE file of the main directory of the CD.
When installing, follow the instructions of the installation program. In all
dialog boxes of the installation program you can choose between using
together
the mouse or the keyboard. If you use the keyboard, press
with the accelerator key (underlined letter).
During a new installation, the \EPLAN4\... directory is created on the
target drive, and all selected sample data are copied to the directories
with the customer code specified by you. This way, you have several
templates at your disposal when first starting EPLAN, which you can
adjust to your own way of working.
Once the program has found an \EPLAN4\... directory on the target
drive, the installation program will automatically carry out an update. In
this case all selected sample data are installed in the directories with the
customer code \ESS\.

Installation Guide EPLAN 5

1.2.1

Starting the Installation

Insert the EPLAN CD into the appropriate drive; installation starts
automatically when first inserting the CD ROM. Subsequent changes are
possible by starting the SETUP.EXE program from the main directory of
the CD.

The installation program can lead you through the installation process in
German or English. Selection of the language is carried out on the basis
of the installed operating system.
Use the [Install] button to start installation.
The installation of EPLAN 5.50 can be carried out on any hard disk of
your system. You should, however, make sure that at least 100 MB free
memory capacity are available on the selected drive.
The following description assumes that EPLAN 5.50 has not yet been
installed on your computer.

Installation

Installing MS Data Access Components for Windows NT

If, under Windows NT, the MS Data Access Components have already
been installed on your system, you are directly branched to the Welcome
dialog of the EPLAN setup. If these components have not yet been
installed, the setup will take care of that, too.
The MS Data Access components are absolutely mandatory for the
operation of EPLAN. Please exit all applications before continuing
Setup.
Installation of the MS Data Access Components is carried out with two
dialog boxes, which you must confirm with [Yes]. Once this installation
has been completed, your computer will be automatically restarted. Only
then will the installation of EPLAN be continued.
In case of a network installation, the Setup program places an EPLAN
icon on the desktop before the computer is restarted, which contains the
path to the source files. Double-click this icon after having restarted
Windows NT to transfer the path information to the Setup program; the
installation process is continued afterwards.
The installation program of EPLAN welcomes you; please follow the
instructions of the Setup Wizard.

First the licensing agreement is displayed. Accept the terms to be able to

continue the installation routine.

10

Installation

1.2.2

Entering User Information

Once you have accepted the license agreement, enter your name as well
as the company name. These entries serve identification purposes.

In addition you determine whether EPLAN is to be available to all users

working on this computer or if only you will be able to access the
program. By default you should activate the option "Anyone who uses
this computer (all users)".

11

Installation Guide EPLAN 5

1.2.3

Determining Program Defaults

The next window displays certain codes such as the customer code / the
(user) ID / the workstation-specific number, and other default settings
like the language of the master data.

Click on the [Change] button to modify the highlighted entries.

12

Installation

Specifying identifiers
The customer code is required for creating the directory structure. It is
an identifier of three to five characters for your company name. It avoids
that your data are overwritten when projects or other data of one of your
customers are imported. The entry must be made according to the
following rules:
Three to five characters long.
No special characters
No spaces.
At least one letter must be entered. When entering the letters, you
must use capitals. This is also valid for the (user) ID and the
workstation-specific number.
Device names such as LPT1, NUL and CON will not be accepted as
customer code, since they are reserved by the operating system.
The EPLAN and ESS identifier are reserved for the sample data and
should not be used in your projects to avoid that your data are
overwritten when an update is carried out.
The (user) ID is a three-character identifier of the person who mainly
works at this computer. It serves the characterization of the projects
edited by you and is later automatically taken over into the Project
properties. This has, e.g., the effect that the identifier specified here is
automatically entered into the Last editor property once you work on a
project.
The workstation number is a two or three-digit hexadecimal number
within the range of A to F and 0 to 9. It provides a unique identification
of the computer (not of the user). All hardware-dependent data are saved
under this identifier.
After the start of EPLAN, these three identifiers are displayed in the
Environment tab card of the About dialog.

13

Installation Guide EPLAN 5

Specifying further settings

Finally you can select the language to be used for displaying the user
interface after the installation.
You can also select the language of the master data. This is also the
language in which the user interface is to be displayed after the
installation.
In addition you can determine the target drive to be used as program
default when installing EPLAN. This can be any local or network drive.
If the installation program finds an EPLAN directory (\EPLAN4\) on a
drive, the corresponding drive is set by default as the target drive.
Please note that system data are generally installed in the Windowsspecific system directory. If the selected program drive does not
correspond to the drive containing the Windows operating system, at
least 10 MB free memory capacity must be available for the system data
on the operating-system drive.
Confirm with [Next] to continue the installation.

EPLAN Licensing

EPLAN Licensing

2.1

General Information on Licensing

From EPLAN version 5.40 onwards, a new licensing is used. To be able
to utilize EPLAN 5.50, it is necessary to enter a new validation code.
Each time EPLAN is started the system checks whether the user is
authorized to start the program. To be able to work with EPLAN, a valid
license is required. This must be installed when starting the program for
the first time. In order for the licensing data to be evaluated, it is
necessary that the dongle is attached to a parallel interface of your
computer. The EPLAN license determines the scope of released
functions. It is made up of a dongle and a validation code which has to
be entered in the case of a first installation. The validation code contains
the information on the licensed version, the languages available for it,
and the program features.

2.2

Installing the License

When starting EPLAN for the first time or in case there is no license file,
the following dialog is opened:

Normally, licensing is carried out via a validation code. This option is

already defaulted in the dialog. Next click on the [Install] button to enter
your validation code.
In the subsequent dialog, the company name and the serial number of
your dongle are automatically entered into the respective fields.
21

Installation Guide EPLAN 5

After having entered your validation code, use the [Install] button again.
If all licensing data were entered correctly, they are stored in the SNxxxxx.EPL license file (previously: Wxxxxxxx.lic) in the Winnt
directory. Here, xxxxx represents the last five digits and xxxxxxx the
last seven digits of the serial number of the dongle. We highly
recommend to create a backup copy of this file so that you may be able
to restore the license.
The following information window displays the license data. Using
[OK], EPLAN is started.

22

EPLAN Licensing

Generally, licensing is carried out in the background, entirely

unnoticeably to the user. If there is a valid license and the dongle is
attached correctly, the respective software product will start without any
additional interaction on the part of the user. If, however, there are
several licenses for a certain product, e.g. in the case of several licenses
of differing scopes, a selection dialog is opened when starting the
system.
The License selection dialog box could, e.g., look as follows:

Calling up the selection dialog may also be of interest if, e.g., you want
to enter a new license or expand an existing one. How you call up the
License selection dialog in such a case is described in the subsequent
note.
If you keep the
key pressed down during the start of EPLAN, the
dialog for license selection is opened. This dialog lists all found licenses.
Use function key
to call up the Install license dialog box from here
and create a new license.

23

Installation Guide EPLAN 5

Adding a release validation code

An installed license can not be automatically used with all subsequent
versions of the respective product, but requires the entry of a release
validation code for certain versions. In case such a code is necessary, it
will be automatically queried when trying to start the software. Without
entry of the associated validation code, the software cannot be used any
more.

In this example, an existing EPLAN 5.40 license was updated to version

5.50.

Adding a new product

If there already is a product of EPLAN Software & Service installed on
the system and an additional one is added, licensing behaves as during
the first installation when starting this new product. As described above,
the license can be extended by this product via validation code or master
diskette.

Graphics Driver Used

Under Windows you can use any graphics board for the one-screen mode
that is also supported by Windows or for which you have drivers from
the graphics-board manufacturer at your disposal.
In case of a two-screen mode you need graphics boards that allow a twoscreen operation under Windows.
You will find the drivers you need to control a two-screen mode under
Windows on the CDs or diskettes from the manufacturer. Please note
that all graphics elements in EPLAN (e.g. the toolbars) have been
configured for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. In case you
prefer a different resolution, you may have to adapt some of the
positionings manually.

3.2

Installing a Printer
In EPLAN 5.50 you can choose between plot output via HPGL (only
possible on suitable plotters) and output via the GDI interface of
Microsoft Windows. Printing via the GDI interface can be done on every
standard printer that is supported by the operating system.
In EPLAN 5.50 you can use the GDI interface of Microsoft Windows for
printing. Printing via the GDI interface can be done on every standard
printer that is supported by the operating system.

3.2.1

You will find the respective settings in the Printer Properties. The exact
designations depend on the printer driver used.

3.3

Installing VoloView Express

The program VoloView Express by Autodesk is needed for viewing
the HTML/DWF documents that have been generated from EPLAN via
the HTML / DWF function in the respective browser. Once VoloView
Express has been installed, it is automatically launched as plug-in for the
Internet Browser when the user wants to view pages generated with
WWW-Out.
VoloView Express is supplied in an English
(vve201_setup.exe) and a German version (vve2setup_deu.exe).
If VoloView Express is installed, this program is started automatically as
a plug-in for the Internet-Browser when viewing the pages generated
during an HTML/DWF export. The program is available in an English
version
