Kim’s Rambling

Well another New Year’s Eve has come and gone. As a kid, I loved New Year’s Eve. The night was special because, not only could my brother and I stay up past our normal bedtime, we got to spend the evening in our parent’s bedroom, watching the ball drop on their portable black and white television while jumping on the “huge” double bed. Our usual snack of Jiffy Pop Popcorn was substituted for red pistachio nuts. Red pistachios cost more than the white, and growing up in a household where pennies were pinched, evidently Mom thought these were a special snack, saved only for New Year’s Eve. Having red-stained fin- gers for days after was an extra bonus.

Unfortunately over the years, as I’ve matured, (no comment from my peanut gallery) New Year’s Eve has lost some of it’s glamour. Well, I’ll be more truthful, and say it has lost all of it’s glamour. At least for me. I don’t know what it is about this

particular holiday that has me so turned off

obligated to kiss the person standing nearest to you at mid- night, and catching glimpses of Ryan Seacrest and New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Perhaps it’s the fact, from an adult perspective, the years seem to go by so much faster. As a kid, the Christmas- New Year’s break from school seemed like a month! Summer vacation? Well, that was almost a year’s worth of sun and fun, wasn’t it? It sure seemed like it. New Year’s Eve seems to be a reality check that time moves on, and there is no stopping it. Saying farewell to 2009 was bittersweet for me. This was the year I lost my brother. My New Year’s Eve bed-jumping partner and the one I ate red pistachios with. I absolutely adored him, and while many think I would be glad to get the year behind me, ringing out the year meant saying goodbye to the last year I had my brother in my life. As I say, bittersweet. “Celebrating” the arrival of 2010, means I’m welcoming in the year I turn 50. Perhaps this will be a good time to readjust my view of New Year’s Eve. After all I have a great family and lots of friends willing to pucker up and stand near me at mid- night. Ryan Seacrest isn’t “that” bad, and I can start making new memories to cherish as much as the old ones created on those New Year’s Eves of long ago. Turning 50 will be an excel- lent time for my second childhood to begin. I think it’s time to start jumping on the bed again with red-stained fingers. Now, if I can find a portable black and white television (with a convert- er box of course), I’d be in business.

Youth summit on substance abuse prevention and technology

On December 7, 2009, 53 high school stu- dents throughout Montcalm County, represent- ing seven different schools, attended a Summit at Montcalm Community College asking them how to use today’s technology to relay preven- tion messages to youth. A major result of the day is the forming of a county wide Facebook net- work between the schools and the Montcalm Co- alition to Prevent Underage Drinking (MCPUD). For more information contact MCPUD at info@ mcpud.org, 989-831-4591, or visit the website at www.mcpud.org.

America Grows In The New Year

(SPM Wire) Do you know America’s pro- jected population as the New Year dawns? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s population is more than 308 million as the country rings in the New Year and new decade.

America first reached the 200 million population mark back in 1967, and hit the 300 million mark in 2006. The Bureau is projecting a U.S. popula- tion of 439 million in 2050. So make room for all those new neighbors!

Keeping meat and poultry cold while it is defrosting is essential to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. The best way to safely thaw meat and poultry is in the refrigerator. reduce smoking time. Partially cook meat or poultry ahead of time only if the food goes immediately from the microwave or stove to the hot smoker. Partial cooking of food ahead of time allows harmful bacteria to survive and multiply to the point that subsequent cooking cannot destroy them. place the food on the grill over the water pan. The water prevents flare-ups that oc- cur when fat and meat liquids drip on coals and steam from the water helps destroy harmful bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. Close the lid and keep the grill vents open. Add about 10 briquettes every hour to maintain the temperature in the grill. Use Two Thermometers to Smoke Food Safely To ensure meat and poultry are smoked safely, you will need two types of ther-

mum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. If using a sauce, apply it during the last 15 to 30 minutes of smoking to prevent ex- cess browning or burning. Chill Promptly Refrigerate meat and poultry within 2 hours of removing it from a smoker. Cut the meat or poultry into smaller portions or slices, place it in shallow containers, cover and refrigerate. Use it within 4 days or freeze for later use.

Making your home senior-friendly

(StatePoint) With more older Americans re- maining in their homes as they age, it’s important for their houses to be equipped to deal with their changing needs. The number of Americans age 65 and over will reach more than 70 million within the next

20 years, with almost all Baby Boomers (90 per-

cent) hoping to live in their current home for as long as possible, according to statistics from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and AARP.

“With Boomers leading this trend of ‘aging in place,’ they are realizing home modifications are essential to maintain independence as they age,” says Eric McRoberts, incoming chair of the Amer- ican Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Committee on Design for Aging. The AIA recommends Boomers make their homes and communities safe and navigable — de- spite age or physical ability — by following four steps:

Clear Your Paths

Remove clutter that can obstruct your home’s pathways, such as plants, magazine racks and small home accessories. If one of the home’s resi- dents uses a walker or wheelchair, allow at least

36 inches between objects. Make sure to have lots

of light to ease strain on older eyes and install wall switches at all room entry points.

Adopt Universal Design

Small adjustments and basic retrofits can transform first or ground floors into everything a person needs — namely, a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Universally designed rooms feature elements such as dropped countertops, grab bars, level door handles, step-less entryways, wide hallways and curbless showers for safety and ac- cessibility. In multi-level homes, upstairs rooms are of- ten converted into guest bedrooms or hobby ar- eas that are seldom used. Using this rightsizing concept, McRoberts says, “An architect can help homeowners craft their physical environment so

it’s increasingly friendly to them as they age.”

Get Eco-Friendly

Seniors also are encouraged to make eco-

friendly adjustments to help lower energy costs. “Boomers are an especially astute group when

it comes to green building design and sustainabil-

ity,” says McRoberts. “Many make environmen- tally friendly purchases not just to save money, but because they see it as the right thing to do.” Some small changes with big impact include substituting traditional light bulbs with energy- efficient ones, replacing old appliances with En- ergy-Star certified appliances and making sure renovations involve environmentally friendly materials, such as bamboo flooring or VOC-free paint. Good landscaping can create natural shad- ing for the home, while tightly insulating doors and windows can significantly cut energy waste.

A simple consultation with a professional can un-

cover additional ways to turn short-term invest- ments into long-term savings.

Prepare Your Community

The record number of Americans expected to retire in the coming years, combined with their desire to stay in their homes, will result in sweep- ing changes to their houses as well as their com- munities. The concept of livable communities — areas containing cultural, civic and sporting activities connected by public transportation — is expected to gain momentum. Boomers who lobby local leaders today for community friendly public bus systems, acces- sible parks and pedestrian friendly walkways will help themselves and others in the future. “If Baby Boomers make senior-focused programs and ini- tiatives a priority now, it will be a win-win, not just for their golden years, but for the entire com- munity,” says McRoberts. scientists to develop new chemicals that target the mite sodium channel but don’t affect the honeybee’s.” Fluvalinate paralyzes the mite and eventually kills it. But in addition to the problem of growing mite resistance, the pesticide can harm bees and contaminate honey if not used extremely carefully. The MSU scientists also found two amino acids in the mite sodium channel that make the mite resistant to tetro- dotoxin, or TTX, a deadly poison found in pufferfish not currently used as an insecticide. “Chemicals such as fluvalinate and TTX target sodium channels in insects and mites, so this basic research opens the door for more applied research on chemicals to control mites and other pest insects,” Dong said. Other members of the MSU team are Yuzhe Du, se- nior research associate; Yoshiko Nomura, visiting scholar; Zhiqi Liu, former research associate; and Zachary Huang, associate professor, all in the Department of Entomology.

MONDAY, JANUARY 4, 2010 • RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER 19 Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as “Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”

In Michigan in 2008 there were 61,010 reported car-deer crashes with 12 motorists killed and 1,648 injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in the state’s highest accident rate).

What can you do?

• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.

• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.

• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.

• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.

If a crash is unavoidable:

• Don’t swerve!

• Brake firmly

• Hold on to the steering wheel.

• Stay in your lane.

• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

We at Hill’s Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December and a big surge directly after the time change, because more people are still on the road at sunset.

If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve- hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their “preferred” repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe it’s not in your best interest to take your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost, whereas these “preferred” shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethical to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. You’re our customer, not your insurance company’s. Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the finest repairs avail- able regardless of DRP contracts.

For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/
