QUESTION 1
a) Discuss the meaning of over reinforced and under reinforced concrete design.
(5 marks)
b) Figure Q1 (a) shows a continuous beam of 5m length for each span. Total dead load
acting on the beam is 3.5 kN/m (excluding self weight and brick wall) and characteristic
imposed load of 1.5 kN/m. Figure Q1 (b) shows the beam section with reinforcement
details. Using the following data:
Density of concrete = 24 kN/m3
Density of brick wall = 22 kN/m3
Brick wall thickness = 115 mm
Exposure condition = moderate
Fire resistance
= 2 hours
= 30 N/mm2
Tcu
= 460 N/mm2
fy
= 250 N/mm2
Tyv
Brick wall height
= 2.75 m
i)
ii) Check whether the given reinforcements as in Figure Q1 (b) are adequate in shear in
resisting the maximum shear force value.
(5 marks)
iii) Sketch a suitable longitudinal section of the beam showing reinforcement details.

QUESTION 3
A 300mm x 300mm square section of a short braced column is designed to resist an axial
force and moment with nominal eccentricity loading arrangement. The characteristic values
of unfactored dead load and unfactored imposed load are 500 kN and 300 kN respectively.
Given the following data:
Unit weight of concrete
Characteristic strength of main reinforcement
Characteristic strength of shear reinforcement

QUESTION 4
A square section pad footing with self weight of 200 kN is designed to resist loads from a
column with 300 mm x 300 mm square section. The column carries unfactored dead load
and unfactored imposed load of 500 kN and 200 kN respectively. Result from a standard
penetration test shows that the value of firm soil with safe bearing pressure is 250 kN/m2.
Using the following data:
Unit weight of concrete
Characteristic strength of main reinforcement
Characteristic strength of shear reinforcement
Characteristic strength of concrete
Diameter of main reinforcement
Nominal cover
Pad footing base height
= 24 kN/m3
= 460 N/mm2

= 25 mm
= 40 mm
= 600 mm (assume)
a) Determine a suitable base size width of the pad footing. Design the main reinforcement
bars required for the pad footing.
(12 marks)
b) Check the pad footing as designed in (a) against punching shear.
(8 marks)
c) Sketch suitable reinforcement details for the pad footing.
