Aims : To introduce logistics management thinking to students as a key area within

Operations Management in terms of inbound and outbound logistics ( in transportation and
warehousing) and relate to challenges faced by practitioners in Global Logistics.
Successful students will be able to:

carry out an investigation of a manufacturing ( or procurement) and distribution

organization operating globally and describe the inbound and outbound logistics
practices within an organization.
compare findings against relevant material found in the literature.
discuss challenges faced by the Logistics management of the organization
make suggestions for improvement or recommend current practices to Logistics
Management of the organization .
write a report that presents their analysis of their findings.

Required :

The student will investigate a manufacturing (or procurement) and distribution

organizations transportation and warehousing aspects of the business and propose
logistics improvements for the business. The student will seek approval from the lecturer
for a suitable organization to be chosen.
Areas the student could consider :

Transportation modes used by the organization and include discussion on cost and
service comparisons (sea, air, rail, road and pipeline costs).
Warehousing setup (centralized, decentralized or use of 3rd party logistics
warehousing) and cost discussion.
Communications technology (telecommunications industry, IT systems, Satellite
linkages to truck, RFID, use of EDI).
Ease of obtaining logistic licenses - process of registering vehicles, red
tape/bureaucracy ( if any), cultural issues in Malaysia on logistics issues.

review current literature in these areas in field of Global Logistics and

submit a typed report concerning these contemporary issues within Logistics
Management accordingly. The report should follow the format guidelines contained in the
Harvard referencing, and should contain citations and references listing all sources of
information. Students will use Times New Roman, Font size 12 and one and a half
spacing in their report.

A suggested framework for the report is:

1. Introduction introduce the reader to the area of inbound and outbound

transportation and warehousing in the field of logistics management.
2. Literature Review a comprehensive literature of the area of study (at least
2 pages of references including 10 journals and other references to be
researched).
3. Background of the organization where they operate from and the logistics
structure of the business.
4. Description of the transportation, warehousing and communication
technology aspects of logistics of the organization.
5. Logistics challenges faced by the organization e.g. registering vehicles,
obtaining logistics licences, cultural issues with staff, reliability of 3PL
organizations etc.
6. Recommendations how to improve transportation and warehousing
aspects of the business
7. Personal reflection what you have learnt as a result of doing this
assignment.
8. Conclusion why the study of warehousing and transportation is an
important area within Global Logistics.
