process. The first week of tutorials will introduceyou to the very simple
process of using the course mailing list, and thereafter students will be
expected to use that medium for communicating with me and with other
studentsaboutcoursematters.

COURSEAIMS
This course introduces students to basic research skills, mainly using
informationtechnology,whichcanbeappliedtoalltheirhistorycoursesand
to most other courses in the humanities. Most importantly, these skills are
becomingessentialforsuccessfulcareersinthenewkindofeconomywhichis
emergingasaresultoftheInformationRevolution.
Thecoursefirstbrieflysurveysthehistoryofhistorywritingfromitsorigins,
mainlyfocussingontheWesterntraditionsbutalsopayingsomeattentionto
attitudes towards thepast in Islamic andAsian societies. Finally, thecourse
surveys contemporary developments in historical methods, including the
applicationofthesocialsciencestohistoricalstudy,theinterpretationoforal,
pictorial and filmic evidence, and the methods and approaches of some
distinctive schools of historical study in the twentieth and twentyfirst
centuries.

Thisisaninternallyassessedcourse,andattendanceatlecturesandtutorials
is therefore recommended, both for the development of the intended
knowledgeandskill,andtopreparestudentsfortheTermsTest,whichwill
covermaterialfromeachweekofthecourse.

COURSEOBJECTIVES
Thecoursehas four objectives:
i)
Todevelopstudentscompetenceinusingsomeoftheverysimplebut
powerful software currently available for historical research,
discussion,writing,andtheinterpretationofhistoricalevidence.
ii)
To ensure that students have a clear understanding of the history of
historywritingandhistoricalthinkingandcanrelatethesourcesthey
readtothehistoricalcontextwhichconditionedthem.Studentsshould
end the course with an appreciation of the historical origins of
historiansbiases,differencesanddebates.
iii) Tomakestudentsawareofthevarietyofapproachesincontemporary
historical writing, both in the definition of historical evidence itself
and in its interpretations and discussion. The strengths and
weaknessesofvarious approaches will bethe focusof thispart ofthe
course.
iv) Tointroducestudentstothebasicskillsofarchivalhistoricalresearch.

a) An archival research project, using the resources available on the
internet in the University Library, and in thecollections available in the
National Library and National Archives to build up biographical
informationonanhistoricalindividual.Suitablenameswillbesupplied
and some indication given of the type of information in a project work
book, and students will be expected to attend familiarisation sessions at
TheNationalLibraryandTurnbullLibrary.
Thisprojectisworth 40%ofyourfinalgrade

ASSESSMENT
Studentsmust gainanoverallgradeofC,50fortheworkwhichisspecifiedas
contributingtothisfinalgrade.Asaninternallyassessedcourse,fairnesstoall
studentsrequiresthatthefollowingassessmentrequirementsmustberigidly
followed:
a)EITHER A research essay of 2,500 words on a particular period of
historical writing before the 20th century. In this course
especially a research essay is defined as a substantial piece of
research relating a primary source or sources to its historical
contextasdescribedinsecondarysources.
NOTE: That in HIST 218 we consider only histories written in
thepast tobeprimarysources.
Thisessayisworth40%ofyourgrade.

b) Atermstestbasedonmaterialcoveredintutorialsandlecturestobe
heldonMonday28 May. Thistestisworth20%ofyourfinalgrade.
DueDates:
Students will be divided into two groups, one of which will complete the
archival research project by Thursday 5 April, and then write either the
researchessayorthereflectiveessaybyThursday24May. Theothergroup
will write the research or reflective essay by Thursday 5 April and then
completethearchivalresearchproject by Thursday24May.

MANDATORYCOURSEREQUIREMENTS
Togainapassinthiscourseeachstudentmust:

This means that the provision for late submission with a penalty does
not apply beyond this date. Permission to submit work after 8 June
mustbesoughtinwritingfromtheHeadofProgramme,andwillonly

Electronic submission of written work is not normally acceptable, and is
allowed only with the prior permission of the Course Coordinator.

PENALTIES
Students will bepenalised for late submission of essaysa deduction of 5%
forthefirstdaylate,and2%perdaythereafter,uptoamaximumof8days.
Work that is more than 8 days late can be accepted for mandatory course
requirements but will not be marked. However, penalties may be waived if
therearevalidgrounds,e.g.,illness(presentationofamedicalcertificatewill

WORKLOAD
In accordance with Faculty Guidelines, this course has been constructed on
theassumptionthatstudentswilldevoteanaverageof15hoursperweekto
HIST218. Thisincludeslectures, tutorials,researchandwritingtime.

AEGROTATS
Please note that under the Assessment Statute (Sections 4.5) students may
now apply for an aegrotat pass in respect of any item of assessment falling
withinthelastthreeweeksbeforethedayonwhichlecturescease.Inthecase
offirsttrimestercoursesin2007thestartingpointforthisperiodisMonday
14May 2007.
Thefollowingrulesapply:
where a student is not able to sit a test falling within these last three
weeksbecauseofillnessorinjuryetc.,analternativetestwillbearranged
where possible. If the student has completed in the view of the course
