Why We Dream
Doctor Margaret Chang studies how people sleep. She wants to know why we dream.
Understanding sleep helps us learn more about the brain.
Dr. Chang works in a lab. Many patients come to the lab so that Dr. Chang can watch
them sleep. She asks each patient to lie down on a bed. Then Dr. Chang connects him or
her to a machine with a screen. It is hard for some patients to fall asleep, but eventually
they do.
The machine with the screen is central to Dr. Changs work. Dr. Chang has learned
that when a patient first falls asleep, the screen does not show very much. But then
different lights come on. The machine uses colors to keep track of which parts of the brain
are active while a person is sleeping. It looks like fireworks on the screen. Dr. Chang prints
out pictures from the machine to study.
Dr. Chang has learned that everyone goes through cycles when he or she sleeps. In
one cycle, called Light Sleep, the heart rate slows and body temperature decreases.
During another cycle, our eyes move quickly back and forth even though our eyes stay
closed. Most dreams happen during this cycle.
Dr. Chang asks people what they dream about, but often they dont remember
anything. They think they did not have any dreams. But we have many dreams, even if we
dont remember them in the morning. Dr. Chang knows that people dream because she
has pictures from the machine. The pictures show yellow, orange, and red spots covering
different sections of the brain.
All of the colors in the picture mean something. The yellow part covers the visual area
of the brain. This means the person was seeing something as he or she slept. The red part
covers the section of the brain that experiences fear. People with red in their pictures were
afraid of something in their dreams.
Dr. Chang hopes to learn more about what happens when we dream. As she
compares different pictures, she comes to understand which parts of the brain are most
active. She also learns when in the sleep cycles this activity occurs.
