Peter Kerr may not be a name youve heard before, but he is probably one of Britains most successful
music producers. For the last fifteen years hes been collaborating with some of the biggest names in world
music, from Turkey, Senegal, and India. He started his musical life as a guitarist, but quickly realized that
playing an instrument wasnt enough to keep him interested he wanted more control over the direction of the
music itself, and in 1989 he produced his first album, paid for with money he earned doing night shifts as a
security guard. It sold 30,000 copies not a hugenumber, but enough to get him noticed. Recently hes been
working on various television and film projects, including the soundtrack for Out there, a major new TV drama
series. This will mean that hell be reaching a larger audience than ever before, an exciting prospect for
someone who believes that all popular music is good music. I dont believe in musical snobbery, he says. If
people like it, its good, its as simple as that. He says writing music for television wont change the way he
works. Some people say that film or TV work is somehow more trivial than producing real music, but I dont
see it that way. Its a chance to stretch myself in new directions, and work with new kinds of people. World

music, film soundtracks, TV work, and the chance to experiment with as many kinds of music as possible. Is that
an unattainable aim? I dont think it should be. In the immediate future Kerr is setting off on a major European
and US tour, travelling with a small band of musicians and working with local performers in the countries they
visit. Itll befantastic, but a bit unpredictable too every night Ill be playing with people Ive never met
before, and trying to combine our different musical backgrounds to develop something new. Im confident itll
work out well, and its a great feeling when everything falls into place. We wish him luck
