CAT 2014 Analysis Day 1, Slot 1

CAT was chase worthy, as always!! Lived up to the euphoria and panache it commands.
Although the exam was on the easier side as compared to last year, the structure was
patterned on a balancing frame. With Quants being Fairly Manageable, Verbal standing
Average, DI being in Moderate-Tough band and Logical Reasoning being the Toughest of
them all, the exam tested high on Time Management, Accuracy, Skill Sets, & Speed. The
paper threw surprises intermittently. A good planning and sufficient homework were indeed
the prerequisites for approaching the paper.
Section wise Analysis
Section 1: Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation 50 Questions
Quants was on the easier side. A fair variety of questions were put in from almost all the
topics. A student who has prepared well and has been doing well in mocks should find the
section to be good enough to crack around 30 questions. Although one set of DI was
lengthy, a couple of DI sets were of moderate level & one should be able to crack them with
ease. Understanding the language was important to crack the questions comfortably
Section 2: Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning 50 Questions
Verbal ability had questions covered from varied topics like, Para Jumbles, Critical
Reasoning, Paragraph completion, and unwanted sentence. There were 4 sets on Reading
Comprehension which had inferential questions. One could have easily attempted 3 out of 4
RCs
Logical Reasoning was the toughest in the paper, with only 1/2 doable set. A few sets tested
on binary logic. Time consuming sets were better left alone. Overall 27+ questions can be
considered as a good number of attempts in this section.
Breakup of the questions is given in the table below:

Expected Cut-offs is given in the table below:

A wise planning of schedule and techniques for approaching the paper are definitely the
prerequisites to bell the CAT. Peer pressure should not weigh you down. Believe in your
preparations, hard work, skills and everything you learnt, and the whole hearted mentoring
you were given. Have a critical view of today's outcome but let not that curb your spirit.

Disclaimer: This is a personal analysis. Aspirants are suggested to go through every topic
as the Paper sets will be different across all slots.
