Rocky Mountain
storms lead to
new findings
about hailstones

By Evelyn Boswell,
MSU
News Service

Hailstones from three Rocky
Mountain storms formed around
biological material, then bounced
around the clouds picking up layers
of ice, according to a new Montana
State University study.
The discovery of a biological
embryo extends previous findings
about the formation of snow and
rain, applies to hailstones globally
and provides basic information
about a little-studied topic, said
the researchers who published
their findings Nov. 6 in the
Journal of Geophysical Research:
Atmospheres.
This is the first paper
to really show that biological
material makes hailstones, said
John Priscu, a renowned polar
scientist and professor in MSUs
Department of Land Resources and
Environmental Sciences. Despite
the millions in dollars of damage

Alex Michaud analyzed some 200 hailstones from three storms in the Rocky
Mountains near Bozeman and recently published his findings about them. In this
photo, Michaud holds one of the hailstones that fell June 30, 2010 on Gallatin
County. (MSU photo by Kelly Gorham)

Alex Michaud MSU doctoral student and first
author of the paper normally studies Antarctic
microorganisms with Priscu, but he took on a side project
after hailstones pummeled Bozeman on June 30, 2010.

If it werent for his inquisitive nature of how things
work, no good would have come from the devastating
storm, Priscu said.
Once the storm subsided, Michaud collected
hailstones and stored them in an MSU freezer at minus
22 degrees Fahrenheit. The hailstones averaged 1.5 inches
in diameter. Then Michaud gathered hailstones from two
more area storms that occurred in 2010 and 2011. Those
averaged about half an inch in diameter.
Examining some 200 hailstones in MSUs Subzero
Science and Engineering Research Facility showed that the
hailstones formed around a biological embryo, Michaud
said. Analyzing stable isotopes of water in an Ohio State
University laboratory showed that most of the hailstone
embryos froze at relatively warm temperatures, generally
above 6.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which corroborates freezing
temperatures of biological embryos recovered from the
middle of hailstones.

Two different research methods showed that a warm
temperature of ice nucleation indicates biological material
is the likely nuclei, Michaud said. He added that hailstones
grow in such a way that makes them a nice model system for
studying atmospheric ice nucleation and cloud processes.
Among those providing direction and advice to
Michaud were Priscu and David Sands, both co-authors
on the published paper and internationally known
researchers.
Priscu was chief scientist and one of three directors
of a historic U.S. expedition that drilled through half a
mile of Antarctic ice and found microorganisms living in
a subglacial lake in January 2013. Michaud was part of the
Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling
project (WISSARD) and is about to head to Antarctica for
its next phase.
Sands, a professor in MSUs Department of Plant
Sciences and Plant Pathology, conducted and published
previous research that gained widespread attention for
showing that active airborne bacteria were involved in
the formation of rain and snow over several continents.
Michauds hailstone study builds upon his work.

Co-author John Dore, associate research professor in
MSUs Department of Land Resources and Environmental
Sciences, conducted low-level phosphate analyses to
validate hailstone decontamination procedures. The
presence of phosphates indicates contamination that

originated on the ground. Dore also analyzed stable

isotope data and developed temperature calibrations for
the hailstone layer formation, and participated in many
discussions about hail and how the research pieces fit
together.

Co-authors outside of MSU were Deborah Leslie and
W. Berry Lyons in the School of Earth Sciences and Byrd
Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University. Lyons
is a long-time collaborator of Priscus, and Leslie received
her Ph.D. in Lyons lab. She analyzed stable isotopes from
the melted hailstone embryos to estimate the temperatures
that the hailstone embryos froze in the clouds.
In addition to his co-authors, Michaud said former
MSU postdoctoral researcher Brent Christner and MSU
affiliate Cindy Morris provided important assistance by
helping him develop ideas and discuss data. Christner is
also part of the WISSARD project. Morris collaborated
with Sands on previous research about the formation of

rain and snow.

Michaud also consulted with fellow hailstone
researcher Tina Santl Temkiv, a postdoctoral researcher at
Aarhus University in Denmark. She is in the universitys
Department of Bioscience where Michaud was last spring
through the National Science Foundations Integrative
Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT)
program.
It was very coincidental that she published two
hailstone microbiology papers two years before me and we
ended up at the same university for a few months. Plus, we
are the only ones to work on hailstone microbiology since
a 1973 paper in Nature, Michaud said, noting that the
two jokingly established the first hailstone microbiology
research center at Aarhus.

The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administrations
(NOAA) National Weather Service office in Great Falls
provided temperatures and dew points at noon before the
three hailstorms occurred.

CHARADE or FALSE PRETENSE?

NVCCA MEETING- I along with 6 other North
Valley County Condo Association owners attended
the 2nd meeting of the 106 NVCCA members. It was
history all over again. It appeared to me to be just a
charade, words and motions and activity masking the
real purpose or goal. Here are my facts, questions, and
observations:

MAIN FOCUS- The main reason for assembling
the 106 NVCCA condo owners is supposedly to clear
PROPERTY TITLES. Question: If the property titles
were clear and correct right now, then what? Are Kelly,
Mitchell, Bethea, DTM, and Terry-Lee ready to repair
and sell their properties? Do they have the capital and
are willing to spend it to improve their buildings? Are
their tax, water, and association bills current? Is there
a market with demand to purchase these condos? Does
the fair market value pencil out after paying all bills and
repairing the condos when one can purchase a unit from
a private party or for taxes for $2,000 to $3,000? These
are the questions and concerns that bankers and realtors
have related to me on the Sunnyside Golf Course.
PROPERTY TITLES FUBARED- Who handled
the activities, documents, and filings of VPLT (Valley
Park Liquidating Trust, SMDC (St. Marie Development
Corp), and NVCCA (North Valley County Condo
Assoc) in the past, whos signature shows up? Was the
same person at this meeting?

CHARADE- Was the purpose of this meeting
to revitalize the defunct NVCCA or establish a new
association to clean up property titles? If so, GREAT!
But if this is an end run using 106 votes that eventually
migrate to the other 750 units outside of the SMCAs 251
units to GAIN POWER and CONTROL of St. Marie.....
drat, not good! Is this effort similar to the Covenant
Owners meetings and attempt to take charge of the
Village Association?

WHY GAIN POWER? - Reflect back on the past
history of NVCCA. If one controls the votes and
positions his choice of Directors on the Board, then
gets himself voted President of the Condo Board, then
writes himself a contract to become the PAID CONDO
MANAGER ($4,000 per month), and a maintenance
contract that the Association cannot afford (leads to
liens), then resigns from the board, enforces his liens
and takes all the Association property and money.
These actions were NOT ETHICAL, but according to
the County Attorney at the time, it was LEGAL. As
explained to me at the time, a board, board president,

and condo manager have the legal power to do as they

wish.
CONCLUSION- If one cannot make a profit by
buying, fixing and selling St. Marie Condo units, then
how does one make money with a fractional investment
as well as not paying their bills? Is the answer to secure
the Power of the Boards? This premise has been posed
to me by many folks.

Politically correct matters to consider

No matter which side you are on in this matter, this
is amusing. Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of
the Chicago Tribune after an article he wrote concerning a
name change for the Washington Redskins:
Dear Mr. Page:

I always love your articles. and I generally agree with
them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they
change the name to the F***skins to better represent their
community, paying tribute to the ********* in Congress.
Here are some other politically correct matters to consider:
I agree with our Native American population. I
am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the
Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a
professional football team after Native Americans would
exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful
not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and
courtesy, we must move forward.

Lets ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves
and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad
because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin
color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep
the memory of militant Blacks from the 60s alive. Gone.
Its offensive to us white folk.
The New York Yankees offend the Southern
population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy?
No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war
that cost this country so many young mens lives.
I am also offended by the blatant references to the
Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally
inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los
Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals
who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible

The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates.
Again, wrong message to our children.
The Milwaukee Brewers---well that goes without

As for the Pittsburgh Steelers... who knows how many

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation
