Tonight I had the opportunity to dance on the Polar express train in Monticello! I danced in 3 different
shows. I loved the first two shows, but the last one is the one I want to talk about.
Right after the train started to move, Santa was supposed to go out and see people and take
pictures with them. As he was doing that I went ahead of him, asking little girls and boys what they
wanted for Christmas. As I neared a family, I asked the little girl and boy what they wanted. I then
turned around and saw a woman standing alone, and I asked her what she wanted for Christmas. She
turned to me, thinking. She told me she wished for many things, and I asked her what one of those
things was.
She started to wipe her eyes and said to me, I want my family to be healthy. As she kept tearing
up, I gave her a hug. She hugged me tighter and tighter. I wanted to give her an extra boost of
encouragement, so I never let go. She whispered in my ear, The girl by the window is having surgery
on December 1st for a brain tumor. We slowly got out of the hug, and she told me that being able to
ride on the train was a very special time for her and her family. I told her reassuringly that I hoped her
wish would come true, and that her Christmas would be full of miracles.
I walked back to the end of the train and told my mom. A little bit later we were singing Rudolf
The Red Nose Reindeer and Frosty The Snowman. I went down to the woman and her grandchildren,
and took her little grandsons hand. He just started ringing his bell and jumping up and down. He was
so happy it made my heart melt. Then, I realized he only had two fingers. I did not freak out, I just held
on tighter and sang louder. Finally, the train ride was over, and we had to say goodbye to the
passengers. When the lady came out of the train I went up to her, gave her another hug, and told her I
was praying for her and her family. She thanked me.
As I was about to leave I went up to my dance instructor and asked her if she had time for a
story. I told her the story and started crying. I couldnt stop. She was really touched by what I did. She
gave me a hug and told me that God put me in the right place at the right time. She also told me that I
should tell the other dancers that story on Monday. Once I was heading out to my car, my mom and I
were talking. I was telling her how that experience changed my life. I also told her that I never believed
Id hug a stranger. That made her laugh.
Anyways, when I was in the car I was amazed how she changed my life and how I might have
changed hers. So I ask all of you that when these holidays come around, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.
that instead of mostly thinking about food, gifts, and Santa that we think about how lucky we are to
have each other and how lucky we are to be together.
