The Words and Grammar Researcher:

Book Corner Club Meeting Date:
Title of Reader:
You are The Words and Grammar Researcher. Your job is to consider the writers choice of words,
and to find words that are new to you and that are important to the story. You also have to look for
interesting figures of speech. To help you with this, read section 6 of Writing an Essay an introduction
to key concepts and literary terms on the academic writing section of this site before you start. You
have four jobs:
1 While you are reading, look for eight words that are new to you and you think might be useful to
you. At the meeting, tell your Club members the words you have chosen. Find out if they know the
words and explain the meaning. Give an example sentence for each word.
2 As you read, note any new or unfamiliar grammar structures (there may not be any). Present them
to the Club and discuss what they are and what function they have in the text.
3 While you are reading, look for similes and metaphors (see Writing an Essay). Make a list to read
out at the Club meeting and find out which of these your Club members find most effective.
4 After you have read the story, look back and choose seven or eight words that you think are key
words (new words or words you already knew). At the meeting, explain why you have chosen these
words in particular.
