Diffusion is#the#movement#of#particles#(atoms,#ions#or#molecules)#
from#a#region#in#which#they#are#in#higher#concentration#to#regions#
of#lower#concentration.#A#good#example#of#diffusion#is#dilution.#
For#an#example,#a#few#drops#of#iodine,#when#dropped#into#an#
amount#of#water,#eventually#the#entire#beaker#of#water#will#have#a#
brown#tint.#The#iodine#moved#through#the#water#until#it#was#
equally#distributed#throughout#the#beaker.#Diffusion#takes#place#
along#a#concentration gradient.#A#concentration#gradient#exists#
until#the#diffused#substance#is#evenly#distributed.
Diffusion#is#the#movement#of#molecules#from#a#high#concentration#
to#a#low#concentration.#Many#molecules#diffuse#across#cell#
membranes.#

Before#we#begin#the#experiment,#let#me#explain#the#
important#roles#in#this#demonstration.#Iodine indicates the
presence of starch. Specifically, iodine turns cornstarch from its
original colour to purple. A plastic bag is called semi-permeable
which means it characteristic that has many microscopic !openings that
allow small amounts of air or water to enter and leave. Larger
things !cannot pass through these openings. Thus, the molecules

of iodine could enter the plastic bag as the plastic bag

has small enough and tiny openings. This allows a
successful diffusion process. Without using the bag,
we can observe and prove that starch solution will turn
into dark blue when it encounter with iodine. Now lets
see and observe how this happen with a separation
medium, the plastic bag.
Take#the#beaker#and#add#a#spoonful#of#cornstarch#and#pour#
about#300#ml#of#water#into#it.#Then,#take#the#plastic#bag,#and#fill#
with#100ml#of#water#and#10#drops#of#iodine.#Tie#the#bags#off.#
Then,#place#the#iodineNfill#bag#inside#the#beaker#containing#
cornstarch#solution.#The#process#should#take#about#15#minutes#
and#students#should#notice#a#change#in#the#colour#of#the
cornstarch#in#the#bag.##

A#common#misconception#is#that#the#iodine#ate#through#the#
bag.#Actually,#the#bag#is#like#a#screen#door#and#iodine#is#a#very#
small#molecule#that#it#able#to#pass#through#from#higher#
concentration#to#lower#concentration#solution,#called#the#
concentration#gradient.#This#theory#is#the#core#value#of#diffusion#
mass#transfer.

In#this#demonstration#we#could#compare#practically#about#
mass#transfer#diffusion.#We#take#the#daily#usage,#the#dairy#milk#
powder#and#liquid#dairy#milk.#Which#one#could#have#a#good#
dilution#with#water,#or#simply#a#good#diffusion#mass#transfer#at#
same#temperature#and#constant#mixing#?#Lets#examine#and#
compare.#

Firstly,#prepare#a#beaker#with#200ml#of#room#temperature#
water.#Add#three#teaspoon#of#dairy#milk#into#the#beaker.##

Then,#prepare#a#beaker#with#200ml#of#room#temperature#water#
of#the#same#condition#from#the#first.#Add#50ml#of#liquid#milk#
into#the#beaker.#

And#now#we#could#compare#which#beaker#has#a#good#diffusion#
by#comparing#the#colour#of#both#solutions.#The#beaker#with#
liquid#milk#has#a#better#diffusion#since#the#reactant#is#the#same#
phase#with#the#solvent.#Thus,#it#will#cause#a#good#diffusion#and#
mass#transfer#between#them.#

On#the#other#hand,#the#beaker#with#milk#powder#has#a#poor#
mass#transfer.#This#is#due#to#the#difference#phase#of#the#
reactant#in#which#in#solid#and#liquid#solvent.#Thus,#the#solvent#
has#to#breakdown#the#reactants#molecule#bond#to#allow#the#
diffusion#or#mass#transfer#among#them.#By#just#making#a#
simple#stirring#process#of#this#heterogeneous#mixture#would#
allow#a#good#mixing#and#mass#transfer#as#this#could#increase#
speed#of#the#reaction.#
