ELIDA Concerns surrounding the

appointment of a new village administrator
have members of Elidas village council at
odds with each other and with the villages
administration.
At its last meeting on Oct. 28, council was
informed about and approved of the appointment of Dave Metzger to the position of
village administrator. Metzgers hiring came
after months of reviewing applications and
the interviewing of prospective candidates
by Councilman Larry Flick and Mayor Kim
Hardy.
Then, despite expressed concerns
about nepotism Metzger is related to
both Chief of Police Dale Metzger and
Street Superintendent Ben Suever council
approved the appointment largely on Hardys
recommendation.
Soon after his appointment, reports concerning past and potentially present legal
issues in Delphos and the Columbus-area
village of West Jefferson involving Metzger
came to light.

Canal Commission lights up for the holidays

Theres been a flurry of activity at the Delphos Canal Commission where nearly 80 themed Christmas
trees have been set up for decoration by Delphos clubs, families and volunteers for the 16th annual
Christmas Tree Festival. The grand opening will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and the trees
will remain on display every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. through Dec. 21. New to the Festival
this year will be a Nativity Scene exhibit where nativities, old and new, will be showcased this weekend only. The Canal Commission Museum will be open from 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 5 for the annual Delphos
Hometown Christmas celebration. Admission is free. For more information, contact the museum at

all holidays but especially
Christmas.
Mom loved to decorate
for Christmas, Jettinghoff
said. She had stained-glass
panels she would put in specific windows; we always
went to Midnight Mass. We
had a chubby Christmas tree,
instead of the skinny one my
dad would have preferred,
and she always took angels
off the trees at the nursing
home for the Community
Christmas Project. She also
helped with the fruit baskets
for shut-ins.
Other memories Jettinghoff
holds dear are the homemade
nativity scene that baby Jesus
appeared in on Christmas
morning and the meticulously-wrapped presents that also
didnt appear until that morning.

Red-light violations increase during holidays

DELPHOS Thanksgiving is
one of the busiest travel times and
the third-most dangerous holiday on
American roadways where millions
of people traverse long distances to
celebrate the holiday with family
and friends. The heightened number
of vehicles on the road and travel
times in addition to weather-related
variables can lead to an increase
in distractions, drowsiness and risky
driving.
According to National Coalition
for Safer Road (NCSR) Safer Roads
Report 2014: Trends in Red-Light
Running, there were 31,790 reported red-light violations during the
Thanksgiving holiday period in 2013,

leaving intersections across the U.S.
at a higher risk for vehicle collisions.
Delphos Police Chief Kyle Fittro
said during the holidays he has not
seen any fluctuations in red-light violations.
Those incidents have remained
consistent year round, he said. The
only difference is when people slide
through an intersection due to adverse
road conditions. Its nothing they do
intentionally.
The American Automobile
Association (AAA) estimates close
to 1.89 million Ohioans will travel
at least 50 miles from home this
holiday weekend and marks the highest Thanksgiving travel volume since
2007.

Schwind explained most travelers
will be taking advantage of the lower
gas prices with averages below $3
per gallon as automobile travel
remains the dominant form of transportation.
Eighty-nine percent, or 41.3
million Americans (1.69 million
Ohioans), will drive to their destination this holiday, Schwind reported.
This is an increase of 4.3 percent
nationally and 4.7 percent in Ohio.
With the expected increase in traffic on the roads this holiday season,
President of NCSR Melissa Wandall
said she hopes that by sharing these
numbers with the public, cautious
and safe driving can be promoted during the Thanksgiving weekend and
throughout the rest of the holidays.
Red-light safety camera data

has proven time and again that driving over the holidays is dangerous,
Wandall said.
Last year, the National Safety
Council (NSC) report estimated 436 fatalities and 46,600 injuries due to vehicle collisions during Thanksgiving weekend. In addition, NSC said having seat belts
fastened while traveling during the
Thanksgiving holiday could protect
and save close to 160 lives.
Red-light running remains an issue
on roadways year round, beyond
the peak of violations during holiday travel periods. The Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety reported
683 people were killed and nearly
133,000 were injured in crashes that
involved red-light running in 2012.

VAN WERT There were three pleas,
two sentencings and one request to withdraw
a plea held Wednesday:
CHANGES OF PLEAS
Tiffany Riley, 25, Van Wert, changed her
plea to guilty to theft, a felony of the fifth
degree. She then requested and was granted
treatment in lieu of conviction and her case
was stayed pending completion of her treatment program. She was released from custody.
Melissa Frasl, 33, Delphos, changed her
plea to guilty to domestic violence, a misdemeanor of the first degree, reduced from
domestic violence, a felony of the fourth
degree. The Court ordered a pre-sentence
investigation and set sentencing for 9 a.m.
Dec 10.
Darren Stutz, 25, Van Wert, changed his
plea to guilty to possession of drugs, a felony
of the fifth degree. He then requested and was
granted treatment in lieu of conviction and his
case was stayed pending completion of his
treatment program.
SENTENCINGS
Rhonda Risley, 45, Convoy, was sentenced on a charge of possession of drugs, a
felony of the fifth degree. She was sentenced
to: three years community control, up to six
months at WORTH Center, additional 60 days

jail at later date, 200 hours community service, two years intensive probation, drivers
license suspended six months, ordered to pay
court costs and partial appointed counsel fees.
Twelve months prison was deferred.
Derek Showalter, 32, Paulding, was sentenced on several charges: two counts of
trafficking heroin, each a felony of the fifth
degree; one count of possession of heroin,
a felony of the third degree; and having a
weapon under disability, a felony of the
third degree. He was sentenced to 12 months
prison on each of the trafficking charges; 24
months prison on the possession charge, all to
run concurrent with each other and concurrent with Paulding County sentence; and 24
months prison on the weapons charge, consecutive to the others, for a total of 48 months
prison. He was also ordered to pay court costs.
WITHDRAWL OF PLEA
Alex Chorvas, 19, Van Wert, appeared
for sentencing on two counts of attempted
corrupting another with drugs, each a felony
of the fourth degree. Before sentencing, he
requested to be allowed to withdraw his guilty
plea and to hire a new attorney. The Court
continued the case for a hearing on his request
at a future date. Another count of attempted
breaking and entering was continued until the
same date to be set.

Dale Metzger is the new chief of police in Elida.
Mayor Ron Klopfenstein made it official by presenting Metzger to the village council Tuesday evening.
Metzger is currently an officer with the Delphos Police
Department. He became an officer in 1992 and began his
career as an auxiliary officer and transporter of inmates
for the Allen County Sheriff s Department.
25 Years Ago 1989
Election of officers was held at a recent meeting of
Catholic Ladies of Columbia, Council 84, Landeck.
Elected were Janet Siefker, president; Velma Wehri,
vice president; Norma Warnecke, recording secretary;
Joan Bockey, treasurer; Pauline Geise, trustee; Ethel
Schwinnen, monitor; and Lena Miller, inner guard.
Cindy Baker scored 19 points and hauled down 14
rebounds to lead Elida to a 72-52 win over Paulding
Monday at Paulding. Also leading Elida, now 1-1, were
Julie Heil, 16 points and nine rebounds, and Jenny
McGraw 13 points. Angie Lybarger had five steals and
six assists.
Dj vu. That phrase best sums up the fourth quarter
of Monday nights girls basketball game between the
Jefferson and the Kalida Wildcats. Jefferson led 41-36
heading into the final quarter of action, but the Kalida
Wildcats outscored them 14-5 to capture a close 50-46
victory in their season opener at Kalida.
50 Years Ago 1964
Elmer Steinle, Rotary program chairman for the
day, introduced Robert Dorman, who presented to the
Delphos Rotary Club Wednesday noon a slide picture
program of his four-week trip to Europe. The trip was
made this summer with the clubs president, John A.
Shenk, and their respective wives and covered 10 countries.
Psi Chapter, Alpha Delta Omega National Sorority,
held a combined pledge meeting and Thanksgiving
dinner event at the Black Angus in Kalida. After dinner, three new members: Mrs. Bud Jester, Mrs. Carroll
Williams and Mrs. Gary DeCamp; were inducted during
a pledge service. The next meeting will be held at the
home of Mary Ellen Gerdeman on East Fifth Street.
75 Years Ago 1939
An initiation and membership banquet was held
Monday night at a meeting of Delphos Aerie of Eagles. A
total of four candidates were initiated with the Delphos
degree team and ritualistic officers in charge. Mayorelect W. D. Swihart was in attendance at the meeting and
explained the Delphos building committee plan.
The members of the Agenda Class of the Methodist
Church and one guest, Mrs. Ray Miller, met Wednesday
evening at the home of Mrs. R. G. Bechtol, North
Cass Street. Mrs. Bechtol was assisted by Mrs. Everett
McClure. The lesson was given by Mrs. John Good
and Mrs. Paul Staup. In a contest, Mrs. Charles Wolph
proved most successful.
Thomas H. Lauer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Lauer,
Toledo, former residents of Ottoville, ranked 10th at the
Military Academy, West Point. Cadet Lauer is a graduate
of Central Catholic High School in Toledo and attended
DeSales College. He was awarded class numbers in recognition of his work on the plebe Lacrosse team.

passed away on Nov. 19, 2014,
at his residence in Delphos.
He was born Aug. 24,
1957, in Lima to August and
Margaret Friemoth.
He is survived by a son,

Wert; two daughters, Jennifer
L. Oster of Rocky Mount,
North Carolina, and Melinda

Thunder to blueprinting potato launchers and experimenting with firecrackers. He was
proud to display his love for
all things rock-and-roll to
include a deep belief in saluting the United States and its
Armed Forces through the
support of Harley-Davidson
Motorcycles and the local
American Legion. NASCAR
played every race day and
he vowed to always support Jeff Gordon. He loved
Old Milwaukee tallboys and
King Edward cigars amongst
friends, while thinking of the
next great cook-out in which
was the inspiration of Emeril
Lagasses Pork Fat. If he
wasnt watching the Food
Network or Breaking Bad, Mr.
Friemoth tinkered using the
God-gifted talents of processmapping, critical thinking and
problem-solving in the field
of industrial mechanics. Not
only was he talented in fixing
things, his skills on the printing press directly contributed
to thousands of printed newspapers for Delphos to include
missalettes for local churches.

approve election facilities
MARION TOWNSHIP The Marion Township trustees held their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday
with the following members present: Howard Violet,
Joseph Youngpeter and Jerry Gilden.
The purpose of the meeting was to pay bills and conduct ongoing business. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. The trustees then
reviewed the bills and gave approval for 17 checks totaling $8,022.28.
Road Foreman Elwer reported the Road and Sign
Inventories for November are completed.
Fiscal Office Kimmet received a contract from the
Allen County Board of Election to use the township facilities for 2015 elections, which was signed and returned to
the Election Board.
He also gave the trustees a copy of a letter from the
Allen County Public Health regarding an upcoming public
meeting.
There being no further business, Gilden made a motion
to adjourn, which was seconded by Youngpeter and passed
unanimously.

quite a few, dang theres a
lot of Pohlmans living in the
Delphos and surrounding TriCounty area. Most can trace
their ancestry back to two
men, brothers Johann Caspar
and Matthias Pohlmann, from
Wellingholtzhausen, Germany.
The brothers would immigrate
to America separately with their
families; Matthias in 1843 and
Johann Caspar, a year later in
1844, and settle near Section 10
(now known as Delphos).
Matthias Pohlmann, the
first brother to immigrate,
was the patriarch of the east
and west of town Pohlmanns.
Matthias, born 3 June 1807
in Luckers Kotten (cottage),
Vessendorf, Kingdom of
Westphalia, was the fifth of
five children born to Johann
David and Catherina Maria
(Birke) Pohlmann.
Johann David Pohlmann,
the father of Matthias and
Johan Caspar, was born 28
April 1754. He was a 41-yearold hired hand when he married Catharina Maria Birke,
age 27, on 28 May 1795 at
St. Bartholomaus Catholic
Church in Wellingholtzhausen.

the daughter of Hermann
Heinrich and Clara Elizabeth
(Weber) Birke.
The children born to
Johann David and Catharina
Maria were Maria Elisabeth,

Niermann on 29 October
1823 in St. Bartholomaus
Church. Maria Elisabeth died
19 April 1831 in Peingdorf
at the age of 34. The second
child was Catharina Maria,
born 12 August in 1798 in
Vessendorf. She died 13
October 1800 in Vessendorf
at the early age of 2 years.
Johann Caspar, born 26
April 1801 in Vessendorf,
was the third child. Johann

married
Maria
Catharina Clara Henseler on
19 October 1830 in Melle.
Johann Caspar Pohlmann and
family would later immigrate
to America in 1844 and settle
east of Section 10. (More

The fourth child, Maria
Christina was born 13
January 1804 in Vessendorf.
She married, at age 31,
Johann Heinrich Weber,
age 42, on 17 June 1835 in
Wellingholtzhausen. Maria
died 3 October 1857 in
Vessendorf at the age of 53.
The fifth child was Matthias,
born 3 June 1807. His 52-yearold father, Johann David died
on 7 June 1813, four days
after Matthias 6th birthday.
His mother, at age 49, would
marry on 19 October 1817 a
26-year-old Conrad David
Frielinghause. Conrad David
Frielinghause died 24 April
1837 at the age of 46. Matthias
mother, Catherina Maria,
passed away on 16 August
1840 at 72 years of age.
Matthias, our subject, was
24 and a hired hand for Meyer
at Eppendorf when he married Anna Sophia Mindrup, 30
years old, on 1 June 1832 at St.
Pankratius Catholic Church
in Borgloh. Anna Sophia
was born 7 September 1801
in Borgloh, the daughter of
Johann Heinrich Mindrup and
Katharina Maria Bernhorster.
Matthias and Anna Sophia
would have three daughters,
Catherine Maria born 8 June
1833 in Meyer of Eppendorfs
Kotten (cottage). The second
daughter, Maria Elizabeth,
was born 1 November 1835 in
Eppendorf and Clara Maria,
the last child, was born 25
February 1839 in Vessendorf.
Anna Sophia, the mother,
would pass away three months
after the birth of Clara Maria
on 20 May 1839. Clara Maria
followed her mother in death
on 6 June 1839.
Three months after the death
of his wife and youngest daughter, Matthias would marry
25-year-old Maria Gertrud
Appelbaum on 18 September
1839 in St. Bartholomaus

In many cultures children are taught prayers and creeds shortly after they have begun
to speak. Without understanding them, young children memorize their prayers and creeds.
As these children grow in understanding, their parents may explain bits and pieces of the
prayers if their children are curious and bold enough to ask. But, as a general rule, most
children accept whatever their parents tell them, and parents assume wrongly, that because
the children have learned their prayers that they also understand them. The prayers are
reinforced by regular recitations, at church and at home, but there is often little effort to
explain or interpret them. When these children are old enough to be on their own, they will
remember their prayers in the same way that they remember nursery rhymes; there will
be a strong resonance and perhaps even a feeling of comfort and safety associated with
these prayers, but no deep understanding, and no live connection with ones faith. Are we
attempting to instill faith in a way that is more appropriate to learning poetry or multiplication tables rather than having a genuine experience of God?

The icicles were recently hanging off the patio

awning like it was the middle of January, yet
weve only just celebrated Thanksgiving! Going
to be a long winter? I am thankful, as I look
out my windows, to see that almost every corn
and bean field has now been harvested and that
they dont have to work out in this cold. I dont
know how they and the construction, utilities and
snow removal workers all manage to accomplish
their tasks in weather like this. We should all be
thankful for the jobs they do. Let us, too, count
the many blessings we have or are able to share
with others.
At the Thrift Shop, weve been blessed with
such a great crew of workers and have even welcomed a few new volunteers that we are so grateful to have. Some come every day, some every
week. Some come once a month; some come for
an hour or two when they can. Whatever your
volunteer capacity is, please know that the board
of directors and the staff sincerely appreciate
and thank you for your hard work and the time
you put in. Hopefully, youve been able to laugh
some, renew old friendships and meet and make
new friends. Again, thank you for being a part
of the team, a part of the dream (vision) that a
few wonderful people had some 30-plus years
ago, to help those in need in our community.

Speaking of thankful, weve heard from our
shoppers how glad and appreciative they are for
the new extended Friday shopping hours. Were
open now on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We have seen a huge increase in sales from our
extended Thursday hours and expect the report
for the Friday sales to reflect the same type of
increases as well. What this all boils down to is
that we are able to help meet more of the needs in
the Delphos community for those who are suffering in these tough economic times.
Our permanent shopping hours now are
Thursdays from 3-7 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. If
the shop is closed due to the weather, we will do

I realize this column is going in the paper the day after

Thanksgiving but I for one believe that Thanksgiving is
more than just one day.
It is an attitude, an attitude of gratitude.
Its just like the story A Christmas Carol.
It wasnt just that Ebenezer Scrooge changed for that
one day Christmas but he changed for all his days.
Think about it: what is one of the biggest pet peeves
many of us mere mortals have towards those professional
atheles that we we root for, support, go berzerko for and
basically love and die with?
It is a sense that they have lost the one thing they really
need: humility.
We have almost a feeling that they really and truly
believe we owe them this, whatever it is: adjulation,
fame, fortune, hero-worship, etc.
In a nutshell, they are above us.
This isnt just for professional athletes but it goes for
politicians, entertainers, the rich and powerful, etc.
I think the story of Lauren Hill is an object lesson.
This woman all of 18 years has more guts in her
pinky than I have in my entire body.
Knowing me and I know myself very well, thank
you! I sure as heck wouldnt be taking the news of cancer in a nice way; I would likely be kicking and screaming
until the very end.
And yet, we really dont know how wed take that
news, either, do we?
I am sure that if youd have asked her a hypothetical
about this four years ago, she might have given you a
similar answer.
Why am I writing philosophical this week?
I think that as I get older and wiser I know the older is
truth but am not sure about the wiser I have become more
contemplative overall, more speculative, more of a brooder.

McCoy is looking more like the NFL
rushing champion of a year ago and
Mark Sanchez is getting more comfortable in Philadelphias offense.
McCoy ran for 159 yards and a
touchdown, Sanchez had his first
scoring run in almost three
years and the Eagles beat the
Dallas Cowboys 33-10 in a
Thanksgiving battle of NFC
East co-leaders Thursday.
The Eagles (9-3) opened
with quick drives of 80 and 88 yards for
touchdowns. They took sole possession
of the division lead with four games
remaining, including a rematch in less
than three weeks.
Tony Romo looked ragged in the
first quick turnaround for his surgically
repaired back as the Cowboys (8-4) lost
their third straight home game.
McCoy, who led the NFL with 1,604
yards last season, had his fourth 100yard game in the past seven after going
without one the first five weeks and
secured his fourth 1,000-yard season
since 2010.
Although his deficit to Dallas
DeMarco Murray in the rushing race is
probably insurmountable, McCoy out-
gained Murray, who was held under

100 yards for just the second time this
season.
McCoy averaged 6.4 yards on 25 carries on the same field where he clinched
the rushing title last December while the
Eagles beat the Cowboys in a playoffsor-bust finale.
Murray finished with 73 yards and
Dallas only touchdown on 20 carries,
the last a 6-yard loss
when he was dropped
by Mychal Kendricks on
fourth-and-1 early in the
fourth quarter.

start since Nick Foles was sidelined by a broken collarbone, Sanchez
was 9 of 11 for 99 yards in the first quarter. That included a 27-yard scoring pass
to Jordan Matthews when Sanchez hit
the rookie in stride on a crossing route
for a 14-0 lead. Sanchez finished 20 of
29 for 217 yards with a touchdown and
no interceptions.
The Cowboys looked a little sluggish
following a kickoff that came about 90
hours after their dramatic 31-28 victory
at the New York Giants on Sunday night.
Murray had room to run at times but
couldnt break one longer than 9 yards.
Romo had plenty of time to throw most
of the day but one time in the first half
tossed a third-down pass to nobody in
particular, giving the ball back to the

Eagles when the Cowboys were having
trouble stopping them.
Playing on short rest for the first
time since December back surgery and
yet another injury on a sack against
Washington last month, Romo looked
skittish at times.
The 34-year-old quarterback essentially sat down in the pocket with nobody
in position to sack him on a thirddown play after Jeremy Mincey
recovered McCoys fumble at the
Philadelphia 13 on the second
play of the second half.
The Cowboys had to settle
for a field goal and Philadelphia
answered immediately on McCoys
38-yard scoring run, putting the Eagles
up 30-10 on their third touchdown drive
of at least 80 yards.
Romo was sacked four times and
finished 18 of 29 for 199 yards with two
interceptions and no touchdowns, snapping a streak of 38 games with at least
one TD pass.
McCoy had a 36-yard run on the
opening drive that ended with Sanchezs
2-yarder after faking the handoff
to McCoy in the zone read. It was
Sanchezs first scoring run since Dec.
24, 2011, when he was the starter for the
New York Jets. He kept the ball until he
reached the sideline.
Johnson shines in Detroits win over Chicago

DETROIT After a week of questions about his limited

production of late, Calvin Johnson lifted Detroits offense with
an emphatic reminder that hes still one of the games most
dynamic players.
Johnson caught 11 passes for 146 yards with a pair of
first-half touchdowns and the Lions boosted their postseason
hopes with a 34-17 victory over the Chicago Bears
on Thursday. Johnson had been held under 60 yards
in two of three games since returning from an ankle
injury and there were rumblings that the 29-year-old
receiver was slowing down, but he quieted a lot of
those concerns with perhaps his best game of the
season.
Guys still believe in what we got going here, Johnson
said. We had a good week of practice it was a very short
week but we were very detailed in what we did on the field,
coaches taking care of us. Its our part to come out here and
do our job on the field.
After losing at Arizona and New England and falling out of first place in the NFC North, the Lions (8-4)
spotted Chicago a 14-3 first-quarter lead before rallying with relative ease in the second. Detroit finished
with a season-high 474 yards in its highest-scoring
game since a 35-14 victory over the New York Giants
in its opener.
Joique Bell ran for two touchdowns for the Lions and
Jay Cutler threw two TD passes for Chicago (5-7). Detroits
Matthew Stafford went 34 of 45 for 390 yards with the two
touchdown passes to Johnson.
The Lions have now won back-to-back games on
Thanksgiving after losing their previous nine. They beat
Green Bay 40-10 last year.
That victory over the Packers was Detroits only win in
its final seven games last season as the Lions frittered away
a playoff spot. They are again in mix for the postseason this
year and Thursdays game was their first of three in a row at
home all against teams with losing records.
Every single week theres a new challenge. We have a new
one next week, Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. The minute
you get comfortable at any stage in our league youre going

to have problems.
Detroit came in with the leagues top-ranked run defense
and Chicago barely even tried to test it. Matt Forte was a nonfactor on the ground, finishing with 6 yards on five carries.
Cutler went 31 of 48 for 280 yards with two fourth-quarter
interceptions.
Chicagos imbalanced game plan came only a few days
after New England relied heavily on the pass in its victory
over the Lions last weekend.
I think they look at the numbers and make an
assessment of what they think they can do, Caldwell
said. Not everybody looks at it the same way but the
last couple weeks its been that way.
The Bears opened the scoring on Cutlers 10-yard
scoring pass to Alshon Jeffery and scored again after
Jared Allen sacked Stafford, forced a fumble and recovered it
at the Detroit 5. Cutlers 6-yard scoring pass to Jeffery made
it 14-3 with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter.
Stafford, however, was brilliant in the second. Johnson
made a leaping catch for a 25-yard touchdown, holding on
despite a hit from defensive back Kyle Fuller. That was
the first time Detroit had reached the end zone since
Nov. 9 against Miami and a sign that the Lions were
shaking off some of the problems with their passing
game.
I dont know that they really did anything that we
didnt expect, although they didnt have the drops that weve
seen on film, or make the other mistakes that shut down
offenses, Bears coach Marc Trestman said. We were the
ones that had those, especially penalties that took us out of
good positions.
Bell put the Lions ahead with a 1-yard scoring run on fourth
down leaping toward the goal line and extending the ball
just far enough for a touchdown. Staffords 6-yard touchdown
pass to Johnson made it 24-14 with 24 seconds left in the half.
Stafford went 22 of 26 for 275 yards in the first half and
Johnson set a record as the fastest to 10,000 yards receiving,
surpassing that milestone in the second quarter of his 115th
game.
Bells 1-yard run in the fourth was the only touchdown of
the second half.
Bengals turning into kings of the road

Three consecutive road games.
Traveling 5,708 miles roundtrip. More
than half of a day spent on airplanes just
getting to and from the cities.

Its definitely different, left tackle Andrew Whitworth said earlier this
week. Its a challenge and we knew
that a long time ago. We knew we were
going to go on a tough stretch, then we
were going to have a month where were

going to have some of the toughest
games weve played all season.
Those December games three of
them against AFC North rivals will
have a lot of significance because
the Bengals (7-3-1) have managed
to become kings of the road.
Cincinnati is back in first place
after winning the first two, 27-10
at New Orleans and 22-13 at Houston.
The Bengals complete the stretch on
Sunday at Tampa Bay (2-9) with a
chance to make team history.
Its the ninth time the Bengals have
played at least three consecutive road
games during a season. Theyve never
won three straight on the road.

So its going to be a challenge for us
three weeks in a row, go on the road and
get your bodies right, get your minds
right and get mentally focused to go in
there and perform, Whitworth
said.
Theyve turned their season
around on the road.
A 24-3 loss to Cleveland in
a Thursday night game at Paul Brown

BEREA As his teammates and coaches went about their
season, Josh Gordon felt like an outsider.
He was exiled on his own team.
Unable to practice or play during his 10-game NFL suspension, the star wide receiver was so isolated that he said
it felt as if he had contracted an illness. No one wanted
to be near him. He was alone, on a separate schedule
and Gordon said he felt relationships change. He knew
he had to prove himself again.
What Gordon didnt realize was that his standing
inside the locker room had been unshaken.
I dont think he ever lost our trust, Browns Pro Bowl
tackle Joe Thomas said. He made some poor choices, Im
sure hell admit to them. But throughout his suspension, with
the things that he did and the way he conducted and handled
himself and came back in shape, he proved that he was a new
person that had grown up from the situations.
Gordon came back from his suspension for marijuana
abuse last week and shined in his first game. He caught eight
passes for 120 yards in Clevelands 26-24 win over Atlanta, a
victory that shoved the Browns (7-4) into the thick of the AFC
playoff race.
It was a welcomed return for Gordon, who did it with such
ease that Thomas had no idea he had been so productive.
I went home and my wife said, Wasnt it great having
Josh back? Thomas recalled, and I said, He didnt
really do anything, right? She said, He had 120 yards.
Im like, Really?
Earlier, in an interview with former teammate Nate
Burleson for the NFL Network, Gordon said the lowest
point of his suspension was when he felt friends and
the Browns distance themselves from him.
I dont want to throw names around but I can see it,
Gordon told Burleson, who was with Cleveland during training camp and became close with Gordon. Im definitely
really observant so I see how people might just be more standoffish as they were before. Its kind of like a disease. People
they want to see it but they dont really want to touch it.

feelings of separation. While he was rehabbing a season-ending knee injury in 2013, Hoyer felt similarly secluded despite
being with a team.
When youre in the building but youre not really a part of
the team, you kind of feel like things are going on without you.
Its a terrible feeling, he said. You see your teammates going
about the business that they do every day and you want to be a
part of it but youre really not.
Browns coach Mike Pettine said it would be natural for anyone to feel as Gordon did. Although he may have been around,
Gordon, who was not permitted to practice or lift weights
with his teammates during his ban, was not part of the weekly
buildup for a game. He didnt feel as if he belonged.
Musings
I guess I have asked the key questions of

life why am I here? what purpose do I
serve?, etc. all my days but they seem to
take on a greater sense of urgency these days.
When you think of a Lauren Hill I
would love to meet her but I know I wont;
Id like to ask her those questions and how
the answers have changed these last four
years you realize that sports is only a small
part of life.
Yes, I know sports franchises and owners are worth unghastly amounts, players are
making money hand over fist (no matter what
agents are telling you) and we are paying skyhigh prices to attend games, wear jerseys, etc.
Still, I wonder if that is one of the problems; they are making so much money they
forget about the average guy and gal that
ISNT making oodles of cash but is struggling
in the every day, work-a-day world.

When Ohio States coaches and players look at Michigan, they see a dangerous powerhouse desperate because its
cornered.
Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer was
asked this week if he could tell Michigan
had issues.
No, because you watch videotape and
the talent is there, he replied. Theyre
going to give us everything they got
and what theyve got is a lot.
By almost every measure, this
has been a forgettable year for the
Wolverines, particularly on offense.
They rank near the bottom in most
major-college stats, including 111th in
scoring (20.3 points a game), 113th in
passing (163 yards) and 114th in total
offense (330 yards).
The clincher is they have scored 11 or
fewer points in four games this season.
But dont try telling the seventhranked Buckeyes any of that.
Immersed in preparations for the
showdown with the Wolverines on
Saturday, the Buckeyes dont believe
what theyre watching on video from
Michigans games earlier this season.
They have a lot of talent, from the
quarterback position to the receivers.
They have talent all over the field, Ohio

State linebacker Curtis Grant said. Its
kind of hard to wonder whats going on up
there, like How come theyre not winning
more games? I just got done watching
film. They have multiple running backs.
They have good receivers. Any time this
team wanted to explode, they
could and just go crazy.
Its not surprising that the
Buckeyes see something that
others have not. They have
a vivid recall of last years
game, when quarterback Devin
Gardner and Co. lit up the
Buckeyes vaunted defense for 603 yards
and 41 points and still lost.
Michael Bennett, Ohio States senior
defensive tackle, spent most of that
game chasing Wolverines. Gardner completed 32 of 45 passes for a gaudy 451
yards and four touchdowns and rushed
for another score.
It felt like every play that they got
was a trick play or a screen or something
like that, Bennett said disgustedly. It
was annoying that we couldnt feel it. It
was annoying that we couldnt redirect
and get it and it was annoying that they
kept doing those plays instead of just
trying to run it down our throats and
then we would have stopped them.
Laughing, he added, They actually
wanted to win the game and that was
annoying.
Hoke, for his part, doesnt think success one year means much in the next
meeting.
I do not (believe in) the carry-over
from year to year, he said. They are
two different teams. There are different
individuals on the teams; there are different leaderships and attitudes
on the teams. Every team is
different. What happened last
year was a group of (Michigan)
guys went out, played awfully
hard together and executed and
made some plays when they
had to.
Michigan (5-6, 3-4 Big Ten) needs
a win just to go to a bowl game not
to mention how a big upset could affect
Hokes job security.
The Buckeyes (10-1, 7-0, No. 6 CFP)
have already punched a ticket for the
Big Ten title game a week later. And
they remain in the hunt for one of those
four coveted spots in the first playoffs.
Theyre going over every second
of video, knowing that a loss particularly one to their archrival would
destroy a lot of their goals and dreams.
Im pretty confident just because we
dont want to have what happened last
year happen again, linebacker Joshua
Perry said. Were going to prepare really well for this game. Guys are going to
take it really seriously. We know whats
at stake.
Ohio State football player reported missing

COLUMBUS Ohio State University campus-area police
are searching for a Buckeyes football player after the family of
walk-on senior defensive lineman Kosta Karageorge reported
him missing since early Wednesday.
Columbus police confirmed the missing persons report. A
according to posts on social media by his parents, Karageorge
was last spotted at 2 a.m. Wednesday in Grandview just off the

Ohio State campus.
The Columbus native reportedly missed practice on
Wednesday and today.
A former OSU wrestler, Karageorge walked on to the football team in August.
The school did not immediately comment on the situation.
Ohio State is preparing to host Michigan on Saturday.
Scott shoots 66 to move up at Australian Open

66 today to put himself back in contention
at the Australian Open after starting the
round in danger of missing the cut.
Starting on the 10th tee, Scott made
quick amends for a 74 Thursday which
left him in 82nd place. He eagled the
par-5 14th and had two birdies to make
the turn in 32, then birdied the par-4
sixth coming home at The Australian
Golf Club.
He was tied for fifth at 2-under with
the afternoon field just beginning their
rounds.

I guess thats got to do with the pin positions as well. So getting it very close to
the hole is not that easy. I think the greens
have to be the defense because there is no
rough.
Spieth had to call for a rules official on
the par-3 fourth hole when a marshal stood
on his ball, but neglected to tell him when
he got to the green.

and after he took a drop, the American
fluffed his chip and missed his putt for par.
On the way to the next hole, he flung his
ball into a creek.
But his round ended well when Spieth
birdied the 9th his last after hitting

Ohio Farmers Union proposes

substantial improvements to CAUV
Return to a more traditional loan-equity percentage split

of say 80-percent loan vs. 20-percent equity rather than the
recent too restrictive breakdown of 60 percent/40 percent. (The program originally used a 90 percent/10 percent
mix).
Eliminate and take out the two sinking fund adjustments
of less equity build up and less 5 percent appreciation
which were mistakenly put in a few years ago, since they are
somewhat related to commercial building appraisal methods
and not farm income valuations.
The Ohio Farmers Union originally led the effort for the
CAUV program back in the 1970s with first the passage of
use value legislation in the General Assembly that was
declared unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court.
This then led to the effort for the CAUV constitutional
amendment that was approved overwhelmingly by the states
voters in 1973, according to Joe Logan, president of the Ohio
Farmers Union. Our main goal is to preserve the integrity of
the CAUV program and to correct some of the problems in the
formula that have been festering the last few years.
OFU also has endorsed the petition drive of Ohio Farmers
United which calls not only for relief on the skyrocketing CAUV values, but also requests the governor and the
General Assembly to reverse the recent action taken in
the state budget that repealed the 10-percent rollback, the
2.5-percent residential reduction and restricted the homestead exemption.
The CAUV was born out of political turmoil over unfair
real estate tax increases back in the early 1970s. I know
because I was there, Finnarn said. It was a part of a promise
made to farmers and rural taxpayers when the state income tax
was enacted, along with the property tax relief measures of the
percentage reductions and the broadening of the homestead
exemption.
Farmers cannot continue to be productive in Ohio and be
expected to feed the world if they are taxed out of existence,
he said.
COLUMBUS - Ohio Farmers Union (OFU) has proposed substantial recommendations to the governor, the Ohio
Department of Taxation and the General Assembly concerning
corrections and improvements to the Current Agricultural Use
Value (CAUV) program.
Under CAUV, farmland is taxed on its agricultural use
rather than its Fair Market-Recent Sales Value (FMV).
According to Ted Finnarn, attorney and long-time member,
The CAUV formula has worked well in the past, but during
the recent three years, it has gone out of whack.
Finnarn is a long-time leader in OFU, a Darke County
attorney and member of the Ag Advisory Committee to the
Ohio Department of Taxation.
The problem was mainly due to the extremely low interestcapitalization rate in the formula, as a result of the Federal
Reserves unprecedented monetary intervention policy known
as quantitative easing and the lack of a three-year averaging
factor in the computations, he said.
Farmers around the state have been slammed with rising
property tax values as a result over the past three years. In tax
year 2014, those farmers whose land is up for revaluation are
seeing tax increases from 100 to 200 percent. Another factor
affecting rising values is lower grain prices versus a farmers
expenses.
After a careful review of the CAUV history over the past
almost 40 years, consultation with farmers, appraisers, attorneys, economists and other parties, OFU has recommended
the following corrections and changes in the formula:
Establish a Stabilization Equalization Factor (SEF) with
three-year averaging within the formula that would even out
the roller coaster gyrations in the CAUV as it is applied to
the applicable counties during their year of valuation change.
In regards to the capitalization-interest rate, go back to a
longer term fixed rate that was originally used in the formula
(30 years) and take out any influence from the QE program.

invented in 1948 when
Eleanor Abbott was
home in San Diego,
recuperating
from
polio. To help occupy
her time, she developed
games and activities for
youngsters who also
had polio. One of her
creations was Candy
Land. At the urging
of some friends, she

Milton Bradley, which
purchased the game
and introduced it to
the public in 1949,

Heart disease risk not based on cholesterol alone

DEAR DOCTOR
K: I am 71 years
old.
My
LDL
cholesterol is 160,
but my HDL is 122.
Does my high HDL
cancel out concerns
about my high LDL
cholesterol?
DEAR READER:
I cant give you a
definite answer for a
simple reason: There
are very few people
like you. Therefore,
there are few studies
of people like you.
Heres what we know.
For
the
vast
majority of people,
the higher your LDL
(bad) cholesterol,
the greater your risk
of heart disease. In
contrast, the higher
your HDL (good)
cholesterol, the lower
your risk.
What does this
mean for you? Your
HDL cholesterol is
very high. Ive had
only one patient with
an HDL level that
high. Most people
have an HDL level
of 40-55. We call an
HDL level high
when it is over 60.
Yours is 122. Thats
very high.
Your high LDL
cholesterol puts you
at higher risk. But

does your high HDL
cholesterol cancel out
that risk? There is a
formula that could
be used to answer
that question. That
is the ratio of total
cholesterol to HDL
cholesterol. (Total
cholesterol is the
sum of LDL and HDL
cholesterol in your
blood.)
Your
total:HDL
ratio is 282:122, or
2.31. Based on data
from the Framingham
Heart Study, that
means you are at less
than half the average
risk for a heart attack.
So that would seem to
be good news.
However,
the
Framingham Heart
Study included very
few people with an
HDL cholesterol level
as high as yours. So
does the formula
really apply to you? I
just dont know.
By
way
of
background, LDL is
a substance in your
blood that carries
cholesterol to plaques
of atherosclerosis. As
a result, the plaques
swell with more
cholesterol.

HDL
is
a
substance
that
removes cholesterol
from plaques of
atherosclerosis.
Presumably,
thats
why people with high
levels of HDL have
lower rates of heart
attacks and strokes.
Until
recently,
your doctor would
have looked at your
cholesterol numbers
to decide whether to
prescribe cholesterollowering
statin
drugs. But the most
recent
cholesterol
guidelines,
issued
last year by the
American
College
of Cardiology and
the American Heart
Association, take a
new approach. The
new guidelines focus
on overall heart
disease risks, rather

than
cholesterol
numbers alone, to
guide treatment.
So what would
I do if I were you? I
agree with the most
recent
cholesterol
guidelines. If you are
at relatively high risk
for heart trouble in the
next decade, I would
talk to your doctor
about taking a statin
drug. The guidelines
define relatively high
risk as greater than a
7.5 percent chance of
getting heart disease.
This is based on all
of your risk factors
-- including smoking,
blood pressure, blood
sugar, high LDL
cholesterol and family
members with heart
disease at a relatively
young age.

On 27 January 1870 Mathias

Rudolph, or Henry as he was
known, would marry Elisabeth
Kohlschmidt and for a time they
lived with his parents, Matthias
and Gertrude, until they moved to
a farm of 80 acres that belonged to
his father in Washington Township,
Van Wert County. Here they raised
11 children: Mathias (1871-1946)
who married Anna Maria Geise;
Maria Gertrude (1872-1954) married Frank Xavier Hotz, Elizabeth
(1874-1964) married Casper
Ignatius Knebel. Henry (18761947) married Mary Anna Linger.
Clara (1878-1949) married David
August Eickholt; Joseph (18801964) married Petronella Wellman;
Leo (1882-1943) married Mary C.
Linger, sister to Henrys wife;
Fred Edward (1884-1970) married Gertrude Friemoth; Otto
(1886-1961) married Cora Fecker;
Aloysius Joseph (1889-1962)
married Theresa Mary Spieles
and George Bernard (1891-1964)

married Adeline Hazelman. The
Henry Pohlman family was known
as the West of Town Pohlmans.
With hard work and determination, Matthias and Gertrude
Pohlman had wrested acreage
from the wilderness. They had
endured the hardships of pioneer
life to prosper.
On 23 April 1886, Matthias
Pohlman, a hard working and industrious man, passed away at age
79. Six years later on 2 November
1892, (Maria) Gertrud (Appelbaum)
Pohlman, age 79 would pass away.
They were laid to rest in St. Johns
cemetery in Delphos.
In the 1996 Pohlman article by Helen Kaverman, the
whereabouts of Bernard Joseph
Pohlman, son of Casper and his
first wife, Josephine (Koordt),
were unknown. Research since
then has located him having lived
in Arizona, working as a ranch
hand and obtaining a lease to a silver and gold mine. Joseph died 1
February 1943 in Prescot, Yavapai

County, Arizona.
The main Pohlman family mystery is the fate of the daughters
of Mathias by his first wife. Did
they marry? If so, whom did they
marry? What happened to them
in the years between the 1850
Federal Census and the 1865 St.
Johns Parish Census.
The 1865 Parish Census page
contains another mystery. Under
the heading of Relative is the
name John Beckmann, birthplace Ottoville, age 11, arrived
in Delphos 1864, Nephew of M.
Pohlmann. Who was this John
Beckman and the circumstances
for his coming to live with the
Pohlman family? Does anyone
have the answer?
Information on Pohlmann
ancestors in Germany was
obtained from the Kath. Family
Research Centre in Meppen,

Following the event, USB will

hold its annual meeting at the same
location. During this meeting,
the 70 USB directors will begin
using the information learned from
CONNECTIONS to shape the

boards strategy with the goal of
boosting the profit potential of all
U.S. soybean farmers.
In addition, activities at USBs
annual meeting will include:
Swearing in 19 directors,
including 14 returning farmer-leaders and five new representatives.

Six years ago, while employed by the

City of Delphos as its maintenance foreman,
Metzger faced felony theft in office charges,
which were later reduced to a lesser misdemeanor charge of unauthorized use of property. Metzgers legal representative throughout this process, William Kluge, Tuesday
night described the affair as both political
in aspect and as a tempest in a teapot, concluding that, ultimately, as far as the law is
concerned, there is no record to report.
We got it reduced to a misdemeanor
and then we had it expunged a year later,
Kluge informed council. And thats the end
of it. Theres nothing to it. He has no record
because the record has been expunged.
Even so, Councilman Claude Paxton
took issue with Metzgers appointment and
Spirit
took Hardy to task for failing to inform

council of these problems. For his
part, Hardy acknowledged having full
knowledge of Metzgers legal issues but
expressed the belief that it had no bearing on his ability to assume the required
responsibilities of the position.
Concerning my lack of disclosure to
council on the 6-year-old Delphos case
against Mr. Metzger, I have no excuse,
Hardy said. It was settled and over and
even our background check done by
American Township proved nothing on
file on Mr. Metzger.
Despite the mayors assurances and a
self-avowed confidence in Hardy, Paxton
pressed the issue, calling for a revamping of the villages hiring processes and
asking for a resolution appointing and
establishing a three-member personnel

encouraged to decorate their homes and then register them for voting. Registration forms are available at the Delphos City Building
