to be more clear. i was a victim of the forced update from microsoft. it updated my
computer even though i had automatic updates turned off. after the update my laptop
would get the BSOD upon rebooting. i tried all the restore points with no luck. so i bought
an ext usb hd and copied the partition from my laptop to the unallocated space on my ext
hd. i used gparted from a rescue cd. i verified i was able to see my files on my ext hd. i
then wiped my system clean and re-installed windows. i plugged in my ext usb hd and
was able to see the 2 partitions on it, FAT32 and the NTFS partition i copied from my
laptop that showed up as RAW. WIN7 wanted to format the partition. i could not figure
out how to convert it so i put the rescue cd back in, copied the files from the NTFS partion
that windows7 saw as RAW to the FAT32 partion on my ext usb hd and rebooted my
laptop. win7 now sees the files. so to sum up my problem win7 does not recognize a
NTFS partion coped from one hd to another. it sees it as RAW so how do you convert a
RAW partition to NTFS without losong data?

There isn't a way to change the partition from RAW to NTFS and keep all the data intact.
There is a method that you might be able to use to get to the data mentioned HERE . It's
definitely worth a shot.

Had a laptop HDD that went RAW. Searched here and elsewhere for solutions. I really did
not want to pay $50 or so for SW I would use once, besides, I was recovering files for a
friend...

I plugged the drive into a Mac and simply mounted the corrupt drive and copied relevant
data to a USB drive... job done. Surely, a Linux box would be able to do the same.
Sad MS does not have a solution as simple as other OS. Good reason to have a spare
Linux or Mac lying around, or better yet to use these instead of Winders...
