The Common Good Assignment

CHV2O0 Unit 1

As we wrap up our first unit in Grade 10 Civics, you have learned about citizenship,
communities, and the common good. Your unit culminating task is meant to be your first step in
becoming the next community activists.
You will work in a small group of 3-4 people, and your task is to design a plan to make your
local community better. You need to create a proposal that would serve the common good at
some level in Mississauga. You can focus on improving transit, bike lanes, public spaces,
municipal services, promoting diversity, etc... Its up to you!
Your task is to create an awareness campaign that includes a plan for local action, and a
campaign to pressure for political action in order to accomplish your goal. You have several
choices in terms of how to complete this assignment:
1. A poster/powerpoint/model/website/video/social media presentation for the class,
outlining your proposal, how it will benefit the community, and how you will achieve
your goals.
2. A 2 page, double-spaced, typed, written report that includes a strong analysis of
existing data and evidence of research to support your proposal.
Regardless of which task you take on, you should identify a goal that you wish to attain and also
identify criteria that you would use to assess the effectiveness of your plan. If you wish to
achieve a level 4, you will also show evidence that you have acted on your plan (contacted a city
councillor/MPP, or other relevant people who could help you).
The class will have an opportunity to view all of the assignments and each student will vote on
which proposal they would most likely support.
