ROUP OF PARISHES

As you read this magazine, Christmas is only days away with all its anticipation and
excitement. The Food, the drinks, the presents...
I know a little girl who when asked what she wanted for Christmas, replied that she
just really wanted a Daddy. ( oh and a puppy .)
It is a reminder that the very best thing that you can give anyone for Christmas is
love. It is a gift that is always welcome and always wanted and it is the greatest gift
anyone can ever receive.
So make sure that whatever you give this Christmas - include much love.
May you all have a wonderful time with a wonderful year to follow.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Advent, the first season of the Church's Year, is a season of signs and wonders, the
most overtly prophetic season in the year. In the weeks leading up to Christmas are
contained light and dark, joy and patience, sorrow and revelation. It is the season
where we watch and wait in joyful anticipation for the coming (or advent, from the
Latin) of Christmas. Like Lent, Advent is a time for self-reflection. It is the season
where we are encouraged to prepare our hearts and minds for the gift of God to
humanity of his son Jesus Christ, to be the Saviour of the World.
It is a time of increased activity in Church and community, a time of special services:
Nativity and Crib services, Christingle and Carol Services; and community
fundraising, fellowship and hospitality, neighbourliness, gift-giving and generosity.
Be prepared! This is the abiding motto of the worldwide Scouting movement and of
the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Be prepared; in Scouting this
could mean anything from not forgetting an umbrella to offering life-saving first aid. It
means always being in a state of readiness - in mind and body. This is what the
season of Advent asks of us as Christians.
In this centenary year of the First World War I am reminded of the poetry of Wilfrid
Owen: Our brains ache in the merciless iced east winds that knive us, wearied we
keep awake because the night is silent... worried by silence sentries whisper,
curious, nervous, but nothing happens. The waiting is intolerable.
There are, of course, many different kinds of waiting and the outcome may inform the
character of the waiting and perhaps help us to get through challenging times. We
need to continue with hope.
During Advent, Christians go back to that time of waiting as the Bible shows it to us.
We read again the prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Old Testament. We
read about how people were longing for an end to slavery, yearning to no longer be
in exile, longing to be at home with God again longing for reconciliation. And all of
this is expressed in the most powerful metaphors, especially in the prophecies of
Isaiah; metaphors about the desert blossoming and about day dawning after a long,
long night. Scripture tells us:
Now is the moment for you to wake from sleep, for salvation is nearer to us than
when we first believed.
This Advent let us remember our Christian calling as redeemed people, full of hope
and love. Let us lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light.
Let us share together in this great festival of Christmas and join together in bringing
04 | The Gayton Group of Parishes Dec-Jan 2015

the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a waiting world! Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to
the new-born King, Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled...
With the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem, Hark! The herald angels
sing, Glory to the new-born King!
A very happy and blessed Christmas to you all,
Reverend Judith

Licencing Service at
Great Massingham
There was a great deal of excitement on
the afternoon of November 16th in St
Marys Church in Great Massingham
when the Rt. Revd, Graham James, the
Bishop of Norwich, licensed our new
associate vicar into all 10 of our
parishes. Revd. Judith has now taken up
residence in Grimston and will be
working alongside Revd. Jane, who was
also licenced further to cover the
parishes of Great Massingham, Little
Massingham & Harpley.
Over 150 people were present to
witness the presentation of the clergy in
a thoughtful, moving and joyful
ceremony.
Great Massingham Church were
welcoming hosts and marvellously
provided tea, coffee and cake etc, for
everyone. Margarert Bowes of Great
Massingham sends her grateful thanks
to everyone who helped and provided
the refreshments.

A happy moment for Revd. Jane & Revd. Judith

Ashwicken Church of EnglandPrimary School

Ashwicken School's building work is well underway for our fantastic new school which
should be ready to open its doors by September 2015. The children have been taking
turns to visit the site each week to see the work in progress. They watched the site
being flattened, the foundations dug out and the steel structures being craned into
place. Each class have met with the site manager and building team to ask questions
about the build and learn about the various processes. They have also learnt about site
safety through assemblies with the construction firm. Later on this term they will be
having a hands on session learning the skills of bricklaying !

LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL

REPORT
Leziate Parish Council met on
Wednesday 12th November 2014 for
its monthly meeting.
It was reported that Cllr Tony Crane
had attended the Remembrance
Service at Ashwicken Church, on
Armistice Day, and laid a wreath on
behalf of the Parish Council.
Although only a few were gathered
round the war memorial it is important
we don't forget those from the parish
who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
The Parish Council received reports,
from our local PCSO, of the theft of
lead from Harpley church. It appears
this crime was committed at night and
the culprits went back and forwards
several times. At this time of year we
also need to be very aware of
potential heating oil thefts. We ask
everyone to be very vigilant and
report any strange cars or people in
the area immediately to the Police on
101, if a crime is in action then of
course dial 999.
We still are trying to get further with
the better broadband for Norfolk
project. It is important to us as a
parish and if the slow broadband
speeds have affected your business

please contact me. We are going to

contact our MP and lobby to make
sure Ashwicken and Leziate aren't
forgotten and make sure we can get
firm solid reliable information and help
from the County Council who have
received money from the Government
to help rural areas like ours to get
faster speeds.
It was reported that part of the Fen
appears to be taped off; the Clerk will
write to the local residents and see if
any light can be shed on this.
Leziate Parish Council next meets on
10th December 2014 at 7.30, this
meeting will be to set a budget for
next year and the precept. With a
push for safety measures on East
Winch Road, outside the school we
need to make sure the budget
supports this, if the council agrees to
go ahead with 20MPH flashing light.
All parishioners are welcome and
have a chance to have their say
There will be no meeting in January
as everyone will be recovering from
Christmas!!

MEGANS CHALLENGE NEWS The Cinnamon Trust

L-R. Pat McCallum wth Henry,

Clare Howard and Sue Preston.

On Wednesday 5th November Pat McCallum

invited Clare Howard and I to meet a lovely lady
Sue Preston of Grimston, who accepted a
cheque for 500 from Megans Challenge on
behalf of the charity Cinnamon Trust. This
wonderful charity was brought to our attention by
Pat, Clares mum; a supporter of Megans
Challenge and also a dedicated volunteer for The
Cinnamon Trust. As a volunteer Pat has been
regularly walking Sues dog Henry for the last
two years. Sue told us that she only found out
about the charity by searching for dog walkers on
the web. Although the charity is based in
Cornwall it provides a network of volunteers throughout England and Wales who
hold hands with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. They walk a dog
every day for a housebound owner, they foster pets when owners need hospital care,
fetch the cat food, or even clean out the bird cage, etc.
Megans Challenge hope by making a donation we can also help bring awareness to

GAYTON W.I.

We had lots to consider at

our November meeting as
part of it consisted of the
Annual General Meeting.
Whenever serious matters
are at hand we ladies first
need our energy levels
boosting and so we began
our evening eating delicious
baked potatoes, baked
beans and/or cheese with salads. These
were kindly provided by Hilda Bond who
was thanked for giving us such an
enjoyable start to the evening. After the
usual business our Federation Advisor,
Meg Dorling, joined us to assist in the
AGM proceedings. Annual Reports were
given by Treasurer, Marion Scales and
Sec. Jan Newman and as usual it was
surprising what a busy year we had had.
It was announced that the Institute's
bursary will be shared between two
members who are attending courses
during the coming year, either at the
W.I.'s Denman College in Oxfordshire or
an equivalent course locally. Our
President, Penny Andrews, thanked the
Committee for their hard work, especially
retiring members, Marion and Kath
Roberts. Two new members stepped up
to take their places and Penny Andrews
agreed to continue as President.
Members have enjoyed films in the
Maggie Smith season at West Acre
Theatre as well as the annual outing to
Caithness Crystal where we stocked up
on Christmas goodies. Tickets for our

Cheese and Wine evening on 20th

November were selling like hotcakes and
an enjoyable 40's evening was
anticipated.
Tony Brock kindly agreed to take a photo
of members at the meeting. He was
probably relieved that it was not for a WI
calendar, but it is hoped this group photo
will be included in the exhibitions
celebrating the Wis Centenary in 2015,
the first of which will be held in The
Forum, Norwich, commencing on 15th
Feb. Some members happily supported
the Centenary Baton as it passed through
West Norfolk on its way to Norwich and an
exciting programme of meetings and
events for this special year are being
arranged.
After a welcome cup of tea and some
delicious Halloween inspired cakes, the
winner of the competition for a decorated
witch's hat was Kath Roberts. Members
looked forward to the Nar Valley Carol
Service on 1st December and also to the
next monthly meeting on the 2nd, a
Christmas party with musical
entertainment.

1st Gayton Brownies

A few weeks back we had Julian Kirk, from the British Legion Middleton branch,
come into Brownies to explain to the girls what they do, and why remembrance
Sunday is so important. The girls had many questions that Julian was happy to
answer. The following week the girls made seed balls, and baked cakes for the
Royal British Legion to raise money at our stall in the church, after the service on
Sunday 9th November, Remembrance Sunday. Here a few snaps of the girls in
action; getting stuck in. We made an astonishing 76, all thanks to the donations of
the community. On behalf of the Brownies, we thank everyone who donated!
Jemima Rae, Gayton Brownies' Young Leader

Middleton & District Royal British Legion.

ST NICHOLAS, GAYTON & its CHRISTMAS TREE

Three trees shivered in the cold moonshine,

a date palm, an olive and a dark green pine.
They whispered together, saw a light in the sky,
paused, secrets forgotten, heard a new baby's cry.
They stood in the yard near the child's manger bed.
What can we give him? the gentle pine said.
The olive gave oil to soothe his small feet.
The palm promised dates, all sticky and sweet
But what about me? the poor pine tree cried
I can't think of a thing, I've tried and I've tried!
Hearing her cries all the stars tumbled down
to light up her branches like a bright golden crown.
Then the pine tree stood tall so the baby could see
on that first Christmas Day, his first Christmas tree.

We will also tell the Christmas story

and light our Christingles always a
special moment.

In November the Children began to

think about the Christmas story and
what that means for us.
We all love a birthday (party and
presents!) and what we celebrate at
Christmas is Jesus Birth Day.
We considered what present we
should give to Jesus this year as
the Carol so famously puts it:
What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a Shepherd I would bring a
lamb. If I were a wise man I would
do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him

We look forward to seeing you there.

EAST WINCH NEWS

Magazine Distributors for East Winch

Would you like to take on a small distribution round in East Winch? This amounts to a short walk
10 months out of 12. The magazines will be delivered to you on a Friday, giving you that day and
the weekend to deliver them. Please ring Sarah for more details on 01553 636275. Thank you.

East Winch Parish Council meeting

3.11.14.
At an exceptionally well attended
meeting, the Council was able to offer the
hopeful news that, following a meeting
between Jim Moriarty, our Borough
Councillor and Robert Wilson, Mr Wilson
had agreed that a short path should be
made inside the hedge between Holland
House and the right of way leading to
Grandcourt Farm, so that walkers on the
north side of the A47 could get onto the
path without having to cross the road. Mr
Wilson also said that he would like to
know whether there was interest in
establishing a wider network of
permissive paths to the north of the A47.
He suggested that interested people
should email him at
enquiries@arwltd.co.uk giving their
name, address and email address.
However, there will be some people who
don't have internet access and Mr Harrod
suggested he and other volunteers
prepare a list of interested people to send
to Mr Wilson.
The Council is to investigate whether it
will in fact be practicable to construct a
trod to the Post Office, and will prepare a
bid for 50% funding if it seems possible. It
is acknowledged that the Station Road
trod is still substandard, and efforts to
persuade Highways to sort it out are
continuing.
By mid December the Council hope to be
able to discuss other priorities for action

thrown up by the Questionnaire.

Complaints were received that the dog
poo bin by the church wall was being
used for dead flowers. People who
shove flowers in the bin are preventing it
from being used as it is meant to be. The
church does not have a wheeliebin
because the Council won't empty it. So
please take faded flowers home.

East Winch Village Hall 2014.

2014 has been a good year at East Winch Village Hall. Back in February we were
pleased to be of assistance to Middletons Buttercups Nursery when Middletons Hall
boiler failed. They used our hall for several weeks and were most grateful that we
could help them keep their nursery going. For our part we we also rather proud of the
fact that we successfully obtained OFSTED approval.
Our regular clubs continue to thrive:

World War 1 Exhibition

The exhibition looked good. Displayed were a variety of exhibits, from shells, rifles
and bayonets to an embroidered belt, sewn as therapy by a soldier who had lost his
arm. Charlotte Paton and Kevin Wilson had researched, not only what had happened
to the soldiers on the West Bilney and East Winch memorials, but also how the
villages had responded to the war effort. It made interesting reading. One of the
speakers linked the events of the war to the songs of the time, both those sung in
music halls and by the soldiers themselves. We heard ancient, crackly recordings
and, touchingly, he sang the soldiers' songs himself: his voice was beautiful! Our
second speaker told us about the former grammar school pupils who had fought and
died, and won numerous Brownie points for helping to clear up! Many thanks to the
people who made and served refreshments, and who put in so much effort to make
the exhibition memorable.
Some of the information from the exhibition now appears on the village website, and
the display relating to the East Winch memorial has been moved to the church.

GAYTON THORPE NEWS

Church Clean Up
Many thanks to all those who came to
lend a hand with the Church and
Churchyard clean-up, both on the day
and beforehand. It was really
appreciated and good to have a catch
up over a cup of tea and cake.
We still have to wait for the walls to dry
out more, but hopefully by the
spring/summer of next year we will able
to set about the walls and give them a
good lime-wash, which will make a huge
difference.
Carols by Candlelight
Don't forget our Carols by candlelight
service on the 19th December. As usual
there will be festive refreshments after
the service.
If anyone would like to do a reading,
please let me know.
Anyone who reads gets to choose a
Carol for the service, so it's a good way
of making sure we sing your favourite!
Services for next year
If anyone has any thoughts on the sort
of services they would like to attend at
Gayton Thorpe, we would love to hear
your views.
We have our first service of the new
year, which will be a Celtic style service
and we will continue with our usual event
services which we have throughout the
year. However new thoughts and ideas
are always welcome!" Many thanks
Sarah

Santa Dash
The Norfolk Hospice's fourth Annual
Santa Dash will this year take place in
King's Lynn's on Saturday December 6th.
The starting pistol is scheduled to be fired
at 11:00am, when eager participants will
set of on either the 5km route or the rather
gentler 1.5km option around the Walk's 42
acre site.
The Walks is the only surviving 18th
century town walk in Norfolk, and the
perfect place to enjoy a 'dash', a jog or
indeed a leisurely stroll depending on
your level of fitness! Whilst exercising,
you can take in the Walk's historic
buildings a unique 15th century chapel,
the Red Mount, and a Grade II listed
church as well as the beautiful
landscaping. A 'Win, win' situation, you
would think
.
The event is sponsored by King's Lynn
solicitors, Kenneth Bush, and is being
supported by Your Local Paper, says
Mark Shea, Commercial Director at The
Norfolk Hospice.
Every adult who
registers will get a free Santa suit, and
each child a free Santa hat. The entry
charges are 10 per adult and 5 per
child, and we are encouraging all runners
to raise sponsorship. Every penny raised
on the day, including sponsorship and
registration fees will go directly to support
the work of The Norfolk Hospice.
You can register for a place in the Annual
S a n t a
D a s h
o n l i n e
[www.norfolkhospice.org.uk] or by
telephone via 01485 601701. Good luck
and enjoy the experience.

QEH MATTERS
Now winter is upon us, the Emergency department will face added pressure on its
services. NHS England state that 40% of patients who attend A&E were discharged
needing no treatment, meaning individuals could have been helped within the
community if services were convenient and accessible. Healthwatch Norfolk has
conducted a survey amongst people using A&E at the QEH. The findings support
the knowledge that A&E is often used as a walk in centre by some patients when
they don't know where to go, or can't get help from other sources. These sources
include ; calling the NHS on 111; out of hours doctor;
local pharmacy; Calling your GP
There also seems to be some misconception over the terms 'urgent' and
'emergency' and with people coming to Accident & Emergency some days after an
injury. I hope that none of you will need to use the service this winter, but remember
it is there for you if needed, 24 hours a day, every day. For advice before deciding
whether you need to go, please call one of the services above.
Our next public event will be early next year in conjunction with the Stroke
Association. More information will be in the newsletter delivered to every member of
the Trust or on the QEH website in January.
May I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.
