The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me; he has
sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to
proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners. -- Isaiah 61:1
(from a reading for 3 Advent, Dec 14)

As I write this, we are in Day 3. It feels like time is

now being measured from the announcement of the
Grand Jurys decision in the case of Officer Darren Wilsons shooting of Michael Brown. Violence continues to
erupt in our city, although thankfully not to the extent it
did on Night 1. Businesses in Ferguson burning, Police
in riot gear, nonviolent protesters halting traffic on the Interstate, an angry mob hurling rocks and bottles. I suspect these images will haunt us for weeks to come. In response to the events in our city we find ourselves angry,
sad, confused.
We are in the season of Advent. We await the coming
of Christ. But, as our Gospel readings during this season
remind us, this is not passive waiting. Christ was, is, and
is to come. Jesus was here and hes coming back. In the
meantime its up to us to be Jesus hands and feet in this
world. Yes, Jesus said that the passage from Isaiah 61
quoted above was about him that he had come to bring
good news to all who suffer. As his disciples, thats also
our job. People who are angry and acting-out, people we
dont understand or even like these are Jesus beloved

Upcoming Events
St Francis Men and Women to Meet at ODells
Separately!
ODells Pub, across from the Parish House on South Central, is the chosen location
for the meetings of the Mens Group and the Womens Group this month. Here are
the particulars:
Mens Group: Saturday, December 6th, at 1 p.m. Come along and bring a friend if
youd like.
Womens Group: Wednesday, December 10th at 12:30
p.m. Theres been a difficulty in finding an evening
time during December. The Crafters, who overlap
somewhat with the Womens Group, have invited all
women of the parish and any friends or newcomers, to
come to lunch at ODells on Wednesday during the
regular crafters time. Just to be sure we have enough seats, please tell Della Hosutt
or Sally Hader if you can attend.

Christmas @ St. Francis: Getting There is Half the Fun!

There are three events coming up early in December that are key pieces of keeping
Christ in Christmas and having a good time with St. Francis. Although two of the
events are sponsored by the Youth Group and the other sponsored by the Choir, all
three events are open to, welcoming to, and actually in need of other people in the
congregation. Please come! Enjoy your holidays and lend some love to others:
December 3rd: @ the Parish House. 7:00 p.m. The Youth Group will lead any gift
wrappers in helping to transform the mountain of black-bagged gifts
currently in Pastor Sallys office into mountains of brightly wrapped
packages for clients of Agape House. This is a lot of fun and while
artistic talent is a lovely addition, it is not required! Paper, tape and
scissors provided.
December 7th: @ Christ Church Cathedral, 6:00 p.m. St. FrancisChoir will join other choirs in the diocese to present a lovely and
sacred Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols. If you have never attended this liturgy, please come along. There are plenty of non-choir St.
Francis people to drive with and sit with. The choir would love your
support, and you will love this ceremony.

The Chalice

Page 5

December 10th, : @ Marymount, 7 pm. The Youth Group plans and leads this festive visit to the nursing home residents. They are entrusted
with Pastor Sallys rhythm band instruments and they lead
us in song along the corridors. Residents join us in the hallways and gathering spaces and really enjoy hearing and
singing traditional Christmas music. Santa hats and song
booklets provided. Please join us as we share a little
Christmas fun with those who are both shut in and shut out
of many Christmas traditions.

Flyer Blitz
On Saturday, December 20 at 9:30 a.m., we are meeting at the parish house (210 S.
Central Ave.) for a flyer blitz. We will be putting flyers about our Christmas worship services on doorknobs in Eureka neighborhoods.

Christmas at Tony and Sallys

Worried about being alone this Christmas? You need not be alone. Instead,
please plan on coming to Tony and Sallys for a meal on Christmas Day. Just let
Pastor Sally know that youll be sharing Christmas dinner with Tony and her at their
house.

Consecration Sunday and the 2015 Budget

On November 9, we celebrated Consecration Sunday, gathering in our financial
pledges for 2015 and enjoying a catered brunch. Here are the results.
We have 44 pledges for 2015, totaling $101,241. We have 3 new pledges, 26 increased pledges, and 8 decreased pledges. Additionally, 2 pledgers in 2014 have
moved away, so did not pledge for 2015. This represents a drop in pledge income
from 2014 to 2015 of $716. Overall, we anticipate a 3% decrease in income for
2015.
The Finance Committee will meet in early December to develop a budget, which
will be proposed at the December Bishops Committee meeting. The budget
adopted by the Bishops Committee at their Dec 21 meeting will be presented for
adoption by the congregation at St. Francis annual meeting on Jan 18, 2015.
We anticipate that we will be presenting and adopting a deficit budget in 2015.
The good news: We have spent less than we have taken in for the past several
years. So we have the financial wherewithal to accommodate this deficit. Also, we
expect to focus on growth in 2015, which is why the Diocese of Missouri gave St.
Francis a $7,500 grant for growth initiatives. We can and will grow our way out
of this temporary financial crunch. Its just going to take time.

Welcome to Our Deacon - Rebecca Barger

At the Diocesan Convention in November, the highlight was the ordination of
six people to the order of Deacons. One of those, Rebecca Barger, has been assigned to St. Francis Eureka. She started her ministry with us on Sunday, November 30th, on the first Sunday of Advent.
Rebecca has become well known to our vicar and to Michael Booker and Kathleen McDonald who studied with her in the Episcopal School for Ministry (ESM) community of the
Theological Formation program.
Here are a few things that will help you to know
something about Rebecca before you really get to
work with her:
Rebecca trained and worked as a radiation oncology technologist until she and Phil, her husband
of 25 years, decided she would stay home with their
two children. During the kids school years, church
work became an important second focus in Rebeccas life, and a place to grow in experience and
commitment to the servant ministry. Her two children now in college, Rebecca enrolled in ESM and
shortly after began the discernment process, supported by her home parish of St. Martins. Her final step before ordination was a six
-month field placement at St. Pauls Carondelet.
Please do yourself a favor and introduce yourself to Rebecca Barger, our new
deacon. We are indeed lucky to have her here!
Note: Please remember to wear your nametag upstairs and down. It will help
her to learn all of us quickly.

Online Prayer Resources

On November 30th, Michael Booker presented information at the Adult Forum
about praying the Daily Office. Here are some of the key online resources that he
mentioned.

The 175th Convention of the

Episcopal Diocese of Missouri
Thats an elegant mouthful! No wonder most of the people who were there, including St. Francis Vicar, two delegates, and parish administrator, refer to it just as
convention.
The two days of diocesan convention this year were full of tradition, of prayer,
work, discussion, catching up with old friends, and some nutritious, practical, and
reasonably priced meals. No boondoggles on this trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri!
Some of the highlights:

A grand opening Eucharist surrounding the ordination of six new deacons in

the diocese.

Frequent, passionate discussions about the churchs role in civil, social conflict, especially the current one in Ferguson

Election of clergy and lay members to important diocesan leadership committees.

Presentations, discussions, and ballots on resolutions to our diocesan canons.

Presentations on prayer, discipleship, and mission in our communities.

Great music, good snacks, lots of fun.

At St. Francis next annual meeting, well elect two more delegates for the 176 th diocesan convention. Lucky delegates!

Eureka Food
Pantry Needs
Because of your generosity, the
red wagon for the local Food
Pantry continues to be full-tooverflowing. Many of our
neighbors continue to need assistance getting through each month
with enough food for their families. Items that are filling and
nourishing along with fresh foods
that our abundant St. Francis
garden could provide in the summer are primary needs.
However, with the holiday season upon us and our thoughts turn
to traditional foods, special goodies, "comfort foods" in the cold
months......lets also consider
some of the following: canned
pumpkin for
pies, cookie
mixes, chocolates, packaged
cookies, cake
mixes, colorful
holiday candies,
etc. And to go with these...... hot
chocolate packages, coffee, teas.
These may be items just not possible to enjoy while on a tight
budget.
As always, all non-perishable
foods are welcomed and distributed - from one small can to large
packages. Paper items (tissues,
TP, etc.) and toiletries (soaps,
shampoos, sanitary supplies) are
so helpful as food stamps do not
apply to these. Thank you for
your continued kindness and caring to our community.

Usher Ministry
Bob Smith, who chairs the Ushers Ministry at St. Francis, likes to use the title
Head Husher since part of the ushers job is to keep the choir and altar party quiet
once the prelude has begun and the doors are open to let latecomers rush inside.
But the important job of the usher is more than that. Youll see the ushers:
+
+
+
+
+
+
+

Greeting (or re-greeting) people as they enter the worship space, and handing
them a service bulletin
Helping worshipers to find a seat
Making sure that the children and their teachers are back with the congregation during the Passing of the Peace
Taking up the weekly collection
Carrying forward the gifts of bread and wine and gifts in the collection plate
Assisting the children with the red wagon of offerings
Organizing the flow of communicants and making sure the Vicar knows if
someone seated needs to have communion brought to the seat

At present, we do not have an usher scheduled for the 8 a.m. service. More ushers
are needed for the 10:15 a.m. service. If you would like to help out with this
ministry, please see Bob Smith or Pastor Sally. Currently all of our ushers
are men, but it doesnt have to stay that way!

Food and Alcohol

As you know, the Masons do not allow alcoholic beverages in the Lodge. But
some of our excellent cooks put spirits in their sauces and holiday cookies. Is that
OK to serve at the Lodge?
Please be considerate of those among us who are recovering from alcoholism.
If you bring a dish that has uncooked alcohol in it, please label it clearly as containing alcohol. For instance, if you bring rum balls to share, please put a sign by them
that says contains alcohol.
Thank you for your sensitivity to those who suffer from the disease of alcoholism and who are working a program of recovery.

Prayer for St. Francis

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living
God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Jesus
Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our
words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe
harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.

Consider This
The light of the sun on which our lives depend seems in short supply during winter days. Darkness in daytime feels uncomfortable for many of
us, and it is a challenge to live our active daily lives. This poem by Irish
author John ODonohue reminds us that the dark is essential for the light
to be, and that much of the light we long for in the sun is there in the suns Creator,
always. Here are a few of the verses of this profoundly peaceful blessing to guide us
through the Advent waiting.
Light cannot see inside things.
That is what the dark is for;
Minding the interior,
Nurturing the draw of growth
Through the places where death
In its own way turns into life.
That our thoughts may be true light,
Finding their way into words
Which have the weight of shadow
To hold the layers of truth.
When we look into the heart,
May our eyes have the kindness
And reverence of candlelight
And when we come to search for God,
Let us first be robed in night,
Put on the mind of morning
To feel the rush of light
Spread slowly inside
The color and stillness of a found world.

Recipe of the Month

FABIO'S EASY CHICKEN DINNER
Recipe by Fabio Viviani
Yield: 2 servings
Ingredients:
12 to 14 baby red potatoes, cleaned
3 large carrots, peeled
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper
2 lemons
3 sprigs fresh oregano
1 sprig fresh thyme
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 chicken breast halves, bone-in, skin-on
3/4 cup chicken broth
Method:
Preheat oven to 350F.
Cut the potatoes in half.
Cut the carrots into pieces about the same size as the halved potatoes.
In a medium bowl, toss the vegetables with the 2 tablespoons of olive oil and salt
and pepper to taste. Set aside while you prepare the chicken.
Cut 2 thin slices of lemon, and cut the remaining lemon into 6 thick slices.
Pull the oregano leaves from the stems and roughly chop them. Discard the stems.
Pull the thyme leaves from the stems. Combine with the minced garlic, and discard
the stems.
Slide your finger under the chicken skin to separate the skin from the meat.
Place one thin lemon slice under the skin of each chicken breast.
Follow with the garlic-thyme mixture and then the oregano.
Reposition the skin so that it's covering as much meat as possible.
Drizzle each chicken breast with a little more olive oil. Season with a pinch of salt
and pepper.
On one side of a roasting pan, place the thick lemon slices side by side and touching.
Place the chicken on the bed of lemon slices so that it does not touch the bottom of
the pan.
Add the prepared vegetables to the other side of the pan.
Pour the chicken stock over the vegetables and around the chicken.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the chicken and vegetables are fully cooked.
Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

ESM Board News

During the last three years, the Episcopal School for Ministry (ESM) has continued
its mission to Make Disciples of Jesus for the Ministry of the Church. The ESM
web page notes that, ESM enriches students' capacity for ministry. The school provides options for those called to ordination and also for those seeking to develop
their skills as lay ministers.
For the last three years, St. Francis parishioner, professor and graduate of the ESM
theological formation program, Michael Booker, has served on ESMs board, helping it to reach more members of the diocese hungry for education to support our
ministries. As Michael rotates off the board, St. Francis will continue have a parishioner who is serving on the ESM board. Kathleen McDonald, who will (God willing!) graduate from the same formation program in August, has been asked by Dean
Dan Handschy to serve a three-year term.

Community Helpings Produce Co-op

Bob & Carly Champlin offered this recommendation:
Community Helpings Produce co-op is a way for members to pool their money
together to be able to have us purchase fruit and vegetables at wholesale prices, having its members volunteer to unload, sort, clean up at the delivery site. Please make
yourself aware how the co-op works. When you check out you agree to pick up
your items on time as specified by the group you are ordering from, so please verify your order in detail, before continuing to the final payment stage. An email confirmation will be sent to the email you have listed on your account upon a successfully transmitted order within 90 seconds.

Treasurers Commentary October 2014

Our plate income continues to be below budget, but this loss is currently being
surpassed by the amount of interest from our DIT investments. Committee requests
have been submitted for the 2015 fiscal year. Results from Consecration Sunday reflect 44 pledging units and regular contributors for a total of $104,961 in expected
pledge and regular giving income, which reflects a 3% decrease over 2014.
OTHER MATTERS FOR THE COMMITTEE:
The Finance Committee will meet in early December to review the results of
Consecration Sunday and proposed budget for 2015.
