Meditating on the Gospel

Thirty Third Sunday - A
(Matthew 25:14-30)

Excerpts from Dare to Share More - Year A by Fr. Ben Sim, SJ

What connects the three readings today is the key word faithful.
In the biblical sense It is God above
all who is faithful. That divine fidelity
finds its human perfection in Jesus.
He fulfills His Fathers will even to
the cross, and makes it possible for us
to be faithful. The faithful in the New
Testament are reliable, dependable,
and trustworthy. They can be trusted completely because they have
entrusted themselves completely to God and His Christ, to Gods
people, to Gods creation. Such is the ideal wife of the Book of Proverbs.
She is faithful. Everyone can depend on her: husband, children, servant,
and merchants, even the poor. She fears the Lord not with fright, not
with terror, but simply with reverential awe in the presence of the living
God, a God who never goes back on His own promises. In Matthews
parable Jesus was addressing the religious leaders of the Jews,
especially the scribes. Much had been entrusted them - in particular,
the Word of God. Soon they would have to render a reckoning.
What does it mean to be faithful NOW? We are Christian
faithful. We are men and women who are full of faith and who keep
faith. It tells who we are, because it tells whom we love. We are
Christian faithful, first because we are committed to Christ. In
baptism God put His seal upon us, the seal of the Spirit. We belong to
Christ, and through him to the Father. From here to eternity we
belong to Christ.
In the gospel, Only the servants who took a chance, who traded
the money their master had entrusted to them was called faithful.
It is one thing to be faithful, when the issues are crystal clear, when
you know people will react favorably, when it doesnt cost anything
and doesnt threaten your way of life. It is quite another thing to
grope in darkness, when you are not sure, when you are afraid, when
discipleship costs, when you must lose your life in order to find it,
when the Lord simply says, You have your gifts, my Church and your
conscience, my grace and your good sense. Trade them till I come.
When the Master comes He will ask you how honestly you tried, how
loving you were. Lastly, the word from Paul, fidelity is a Christ, who
comes in unexpected ways. If you want to hear, Well done, good and
faithful servant from Christ riding clouds of glory, then welcome him
when he comes hungry and thirsty, lonely and unloved, imprisoned by
all kinds of fears, victim of wars, injustice and exploitation.
Examine at the end of each day: How have I met Jesus today?
Have I reached out to him?

Some weeks ago when I placed an article on the Ignite Newsletter
on our plan to celebrate the first anniversary of Yolanda in Northern
Cebu, a parishioner corrected me saying, We dont celebrate Super
Typhoon Yolanda. We commemorate. My response was We celebrate
because we look beyond the tragedy and destruction to see the
stronger super-super typhoon that struck us - the grace of God that
touched the hearts of so many people all over the world . who showed
their concern and support of the victims of Yolanda.
Last weekend was a mini manifestation of that. But it was awesome
and inspiring to see what our little help can mean for the life of those
fishermen struck by the eye of Yolanda.
The awesome-inspiring event started Saturday, Nov. 8 with the
Medical- Dental Mission. We expected around 20 doctor-volunteers.
58 came! We expected about 500 patients. Almost 1,000 came! We had pharmaceuticals that provided laboratory
tests of blood sugar, ECG, blood pressure, and many others. We thank God and thank all these generous volunteers
and donors.
The following day, the day of the Stella Maris
and Friends Convention was an even more
moving experience. The days activities started
with a Fluvial Parade. The visiting benefactors
sailed in a bigger lead boat trailed by a number
of the motor bancas of the beneficiaries. It was
quite an awesome-inspiring experience to see so
many boats trailing us and on each side of our
boat. It was also quite heartwarming to see the
whole family, the fishermen couple with their
children and even babies in their bancas waving
at us.
The Fluvial Parade was immediately followed
by a Thanksgiving Mass in the San Roque Church. Again, an impressive sight with the fishermen wearing the
Stella Maris and Friends white T-shirts saying Thank you. Im fishing again. At the end of the Mass, the
Message and Apostolic Blessing of the Papal Nuncio in the name of Pope Francis was read to the participants of
the Convention.
An Agape breakfast followed after the Mass. Then the program opened with the entrance march of the
fishermen by delegation. The keynote speaker, Myrissa L. Tabao, the Visayas Regional Manager of Foundation
Philippine Environment gave a very informative and inspiring talk.
In the afternoon was a program by the different delegations and raffles of major prizes. In the end every family
brought home a gift of a Styrofoam box with a rain coat, a solar lamp, and 5 kilos of rice.
The people were so happy that many still lingered on after the activities. It was also a very touching memorable
day for the visiting benefactors. It will certainly be one of the most unforgettable day of their lives.
We thank all the benefactors and volunteers that made this so special day possible.
May the Lord through the intercession of Stella Maris continue to bless and guide us.

dvent Recollection
Advent

Being constantly aware that we are children of the
same loving Father we at the Sacred Heart parish Ladies
Association and the Sacred Heart Formation Center
endlessly think of ways and means to enrich our
community spirituality as we walk together on the road
towards holiness. To this end we have been organizing
recollections, retreats and other spiritual exercises that
will enlighten, inspire and strengthen us in our spiritual
journey.
This Advent we are a little early in our schedule for
the advent Recollection in order to adjust to the timetable of our speaker. This time we have invited the much
sought-after Jesuit Father Javy Alpasa. He is a man of
many responsibilities. Presently he is Executive Director
of the Simbahan Lingkod ng Bayan at the Ateneo de
Manila University. He is also chairman of the Board of
Directors of a social enterprise called Rags to Riches.
This is a multi-awarded social enterprise connecting the
extremes of high-end fashion and he marginalized sector
near the garbage dumpsite capital of the Philippines. It has
been existing since July 2007 up to the present. Lately Fr.
Javy Alpasa has also funded the Heroic Leadership Program.
With high hopes we look forward to this Advent
Recollection conducted by a Jesuit with such credentials
and rich experience. No doubt it will help us improve in
our relationship with God and men. We all know what
Christian life is all about: A loving relationship with God
and men. If we come out of our Recollection thus
improved, then we have attained our goal.

Sharing the Gospel

Today you have 10 quarters in your money jar.

The Red Cross needs money to provide food, water,
and shelter after hurricanes. Fire departments need
new fire trucks to put out fires. Police Departments
need bullet-proof vests to protect officers. Your
parents need money to buy bread and milk. When
you give to his people, you give to God. When you
give to God, he refills your money jar. Because you
share, you will always have enough.

Lord, help me share with others.
