Holiday season resonates with traditions

M

y favorite story, Fiddler

on the Roof, centers on
the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while dealing
with the edict of the Tsar that
evicts the Jews from their village.
In the title song, Traditions,
Tevye struggles to understand
the strong-willed actions of his
three older daughters each
ones choice of husband moves
further away from the customs
of his faith as well as the loss
of his community.
As Tevye discovers, some traditions remain, while others
must change.
The holiday season resonates
with traditions and Im happy to
share a few.

TABLE TALK TRADITION

I love to create a festive holiday
table setting replete with folded
place cards.
Inside each place card, I write a
question and the guest answers.
Last year for a family Christmas
dinner, I had a nutcracker theme and
the questions asked were related to
the particular nutcrackers duties. For
example, the Clock Maker question
was When was the most embarrass-

SANTAS MESS
Every year since I can remember,
I would wake up Christmas morning
to find that Santa had made a MESS
in the living room near the fireplace.
While Santa was stuffing the stockings, he left dirt, leaves, twigs and
sooty footprints from the chimney all
over the carpet.
My family would laugh why he
was so messy and leave him a note
on Christmas Eve asking him to be
neater. Never worked.
Even now that I am in my 20s,
Santa still leaves a mess.

FAMILY CRUISE TOP OF LIST

The Calzadas kicked off 2014 with
a cruise throughout the Bahamas and
Virgin Islands. I finally stepped foot
outside the United States and my
immediate family (parents and three
sisters) constituted half of the party of
12 from my dads side, thanks to my
grandmothers generosity.

~Amanda Calzada

INTO THE WOODS

The day after Thanksgiving each

year, my family and I take the kids to
a Christmas tree farm and cut down
our tree.
Family and friends then gather in
the evening to trim the tree, drink
egg nog, wine and beer and listen to
and singing Christmas carols.

~Brittany Fuller

ONE SPECIAL GIFT

In 1963, I was 10 years old and I
wanted a guitar.
My parents said no, but a family
friend, who owed Dad $20, was willing to give up his guitar for the debt.
So I got a used guitar for Christmas. I didnt even care that the strings
were so high off the fret board that I
couldnt play it.

ITS A MOVIE DATE
My favorite holiday tradition is
getting the entire family (11) together for an outing to the movie theater
to watch a Christmas classic.
Our family is typically very busy this
time of year, so I like to purchase the
movie tickets in advance, which tends
to hold us accountable for keeping
the date open.

Colleen Warren-Fritter and Steve Sipe. Sipe searches throughout
the world looking for unique antiques and wood that can be
reclaimed and recreated into decorative and elaborate
furnishings and collectibles, like the one pictured at right.

Youll see hundreds of

restored antiques just waiting
to find forever homes likely
just the piece or pieces that
you didnt even know you were
looking for.
Thats what happened to
Sherri and Allen Atkins.
My husband saw this showroom off Interstate 80 in Newcastle and we decided to take a
look, Sherri said. We were
just browsing, but one thing
led to another. We kept finding
things that we loved.
Eight pieces later, the
Auburn couple owns a coffee
table created from intricate
scrollwork, wood and strings of
an antique grand piano, a Vic-

that was once a clergy piece, a
desk, a burl coffee table and
more. The couple cant seem
to stop collecting.
We are slowly replacing
things with these beautiful
pieces, Sherri said.

his fathers wisdom and his
upbringing in a tiny cabin near
Yosemite with teaching him
what is important, including
an emphasis on re-purposing
and re-using furniture.

when I got in to the antiques business at a

young age, my dad said antiques were my calling, Sipe said.
Sipe has been in the furniture business for
more than three decades and his company was
green long before green was a buzz word.
When you look at the sheer amount of
materials, pollution and fuels that go in to
manufacturing a piece of furniture, you will be
shocked, Sipe said. We have pickers sourcing materials for us throughout the United
States and in Europe as well.
Sipe travels to Belgium, the Netherlands and
other places far afield to find his treasures, and
he specializes in unique pieces that cant be
found anywhere else.
After being in the industry for nearly 40
years I have contacts across the country,
including auctioneers at auction houses. I feel
like a stockbroker working the phones sometimes, Sipe said.
Sherri and Allen Atkins consider Sipe and his
craftsmen to be highly skilled artists.
Theres no arguing with that statement. Sipe
can tell you everything about the history of a
piece of furniture or accessory.
Were experts when it comes to pieces that
have been sourced from churches, from courthouses, and bar pieces. My knowledge spans
most of the world, Sipe said. The moldings,
the cuts, the carvings, the details and joints,
they all tell me a story of the time, the place
and the region of each piece.
An antique dining set that will seat 18? A Victorian drop-front desk or how about a turn-ofthe-century cash register? Its impossible to
imagine what you might see in the showroom
on any given day, and equally impossible to
forget.
And Sipe isnt the only craftsman at Sipes
Tahoe. His lead craftsman has been with the
company for a quarter of a century and the half
dozen additional craftsmen are artists as well.
They just look at something and their
minds start working. They ask themselves,
what can I do here, Sherri says of the artisans.
Not only does the company re-finish and reenvision antiques and newer pieces from
around the world, but they also offer made-toorder services and refinishing.
Sipes Tahoe first opened in Sonora, then
relocated to the Truckee area. Today their
18,000 square foot showroom is in Newcastle
and Sipe hopes to expand to Napa, Reno and
Truckee locations in the near future.
Sherri counts Sipe as a personal friend after
working with him on many projects.
The reason our clients love working with us
is because we can shed new light on an idea.
Were not just out for a quick buck, Sipe said.
And, Sherri adds for those who might be
interested, Steve Sipe is Newcastles most eligible bachelor.

December is always a crazy month. With malls

packed with shoppers and traffic jams down
Douglas Boulevard, its a wonder that we can get
anything accomplished at all.
And even if your to-do list doesnt include playing Santas helper, just getting through the line at
the grocery store can be a real chore.
Melanie Ferguson suggests taking an hour or
two to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas.
Thats what the Granite Bay Nativity Exhibit
is all about.
We wanted to have an event that brought
people together to celebrate the birth of Jesus
Christ through art, Ferguson said. We
think that its important to recognize that
this is the real reason for Christmas.
In addition, Ferguson sees the event as
a great way to bring community members
together during the holiday season.
Its amazing to learn that the event
runs for only three days.

of Latter Day Saints of Granite Bay and Rocklin,

the eight-year old event requires more than 100
volunteers to set up more than 500 nativities over
the course of 36 hours.
And when the joy, the laughter and the awe
have come to a close for another year, it takes
those same volunteers several hours to break
down the room and put everything away in time
for church service the next morning.
The well-coordinated volunteer effort includes
those with an eye for fabric and design, those
who are experts when it comes to logistics, and
those who love to share information about each
of the nativities that have been lovingly gathered
from nearly every corner of the globe.
It takes a small army, Ferguson said.
And theres no way you can visit this exhibit,
regardless of your spiritual beliefs, without being
touched by the sheer numbers and the artistic
nature of the display.
No matter your faith, you can appreciate the
art and the beauty, Ferguson said.
The exhibit encompasses four rooms, the
largest featuring everything from the finest crystal to the most basic wood.
Smaller rooms are themed based on region and
include an African and Asian room, a Latin America room, a Bethlehem room and even a chil CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Something for the home is always a special

gift and The Clay Corner in Quarry Ponds has a
fabulous selection of pottery and pewter as well
as ceramics from several countries.
Owner Cricket Ogren said she first offered
pottery from Italy, but couldnt limit herself
to just one country. She now offers colorful
Mexican Talavera, Polish pottery and South
African ceramics.
Theres a range of items including plates, loaf

various pieces vary depending upon the artist,
the country and other factors.
The Italian pottery includes biscotti and pasta

containers, mugs and collectible dinner plates

commemorating Il Palio horse competition, a

ceramics are by Arte Italica, Gubbio and Vietri.
Giftware from this country includes Terrafirma Ceramics from New York, which offers bowls
and trays created by pouring liquid porcelain

describes her style as abstract impressionism. The technique,
she said, allows me to become more emotional as Im

PHILIP WOOD GRANITE BAY VIEW

The golden hills of Placer County are inspiration to artist Mya

Louw, who uses acrylics, pastels and oils to create her paintings.
I paint landscapes and ladies, said Louw, who was born in
Rotterdam, Holland. She has lived, studied and worked in Europe,
South Africa and now Granite Bay. She moved to Granite Bay
20 years ago and recently opened a studio near the post office.
The setting outside her studio is reflected in a few of Louws
paintings, while other landscapes are scenes from around the
county. Her artwork ranges from $100 to $5,000.
For fun and frivolity, I paint the ladies some after friends
who dont know theyve been painted, Louw said. Theyre fun
portraits.
Her style is abstract impressionism, which, she said, allows
me to become more emotional as Im painting. I show emotion
rather than total realism.
Louw began her classical art training at age 13, earning a
Fine Arts degree with Honors in Painting at Rhodes University
in South Africa and doing graduate studies at Polytechnics and
the University of the Witwatersand in Johannesburg.

The oils are made from the

takes nearly a ton of the pear,

Its 100 percent organic and full

Little Bliss Cakery bakes lots of delicious and

brightly decorated goodies, ranging from custom
cakes and mini cupcakes to macaroons, seasonal
pies, cookies and cake pops.
Theres a little bit of everything that has to do
with cakes, said Wendi Calton, owner/baker, who
opened the Cakery 2 years ago.
For the holidays, Calton is offering macaroons,
a French delicacy, great for holiday parties, weddings and special occasions. They were served
along with a French wine at a recent gathering.
Also for the holidays are yule logs and frosted
cakes that are given an air brushing of gold or silver and decorated with poinsettias. For other
occasions, customers can search Pinterest or the
Cakerys website for cake decorating ideas. Or
bring in a party invitation and ask that the cake be
decorated to match it.
The Cakery offers 27 flavors of cupcakes and
mini cupcake kisses. Any flavor can be selected
for a full-size cake, which can be frosted with butter cream and decorated with fondant. Flowers
are handmade by two employees trained in Cambodia.
They make masterpiece roses, something other bakeries dont do, Calton said.
Prices range from $2 each for macaroons to
$400 for a wedding cake.

For men who dont like to shop and the women

in their lives who arent sure of sizes, Trumaker
has the answer shirts custom-made to order in
quality, long-lasting fabrics.
The process is easy. A Trumaker representative
will come to the home, office or other location
with fabric samples and shirt styles, both dress
and casual.
Theres a choice of button-down or plain collars, French or plain cuffs, long or short sleeves.
The rep will take measurements of the neck,

are fitted properly and not too tight or too loose.
Fabrics are cotton, linen or a blend and theres a
choice of colors, stripes, plaids or checkered.
Once Trumaker has the measurements, additional shirts or tee-shirts can be ordered any time.
The cool thing is that weve merged technology
and apparel to have a custom feel at a reasonable

you love Christmas, then you

probably know that Pottery World in
Rocklin is the place to find unique holiday ornaments, custom floral arrangements and decorating ideas galore.
What you might not know is that the venue
is also one of the best destinations around
when youre looking for a delightful holiday
lunch or a decadent dessert.
The caf, which is open for lunch from 11
a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily and for breakfast on
weekends from 9 to 11 a.m., offers fresh,
healthy fare ranging from gourmet salads and
hamburgers to melt-in-your mouth tri-tip
sandwiches.
The caf also offers monthly high tea and
will host three high teas in December. Sadly,
the holiday tea events have long since been
booked. Lucky for you, however, the caf has
plenty of holiday delights in store every day.
We always run featured menus depending
on whats seasonal and fresh, said Tina Fondren, the cafs manager. This month we will
feature a turkey cranberry sandwich on cranberry bread with a cranberry orange sauce.
In addition, the caf will prepare a Yule log,
which according to Fondren, is a hybrid of
delicious bread and dessert, and they will stay
busy baking traditional pies and lemon curd
as well.
Its easy to see why the caf fills up nearly
every day during lunchtime, regardless of the
season.
Most of our guests come here for a leisurely

lunch. This isnt your typical lunch

break crowd, Fondren said. People
come here for an experience.
Rancho Murrieta residents Darlene
Rippon and Dianne Fields think nothing of travelling to Rocklin to enjoy the
caf atmosphere.
Weve been coming here every
month or so and we started before the
caf was even open, Rippon said.
Fields has a hard time deciding what
her favorite dish is. It used to be the salad sampler, but I just had the quiche
and it was wonderful.
Both women say the caf provides
not only an outstanding lunch, but
great decorating ideas as well.
Speaking of the salad sampler, the
dish is a perennial favorite because diners can choose from multiple options,
including tasty Caesar, spinach salad,
dill potato salad, and even the soup of
the day.
But Fondren said the tri-tip sandwich
and the Thai salad are the most popular
menu items, followed by the salmon
Caesar, which is to die for and even
the veggie burger.
Im not a veggie burger girl, but we
serve it with pepper jack, tomato and
avocado and its amazing, Fondren
said.
The quality of the food is paramount
to Fondren and her staff.
We spend a lot of time making our
own sauces and making sure the items

we get from outside the building are

artisanal and local, Fondren said. But
its the whole experience that is Pottery
World that makes us truly special.
If youre looking to taste something
special, youll likely have to avert your
eyes from the hundreds of holiday displays and room vignettes as you make
your way to the caf, lest you be sidetracked for hours and miss lunch.
The first thing you will notice in the
caf is the dessert case. Its no accident
that the case is prominently displayed.
There are chocolate tortes, tiramisu
cake, pumpkin pie, and scones with
cream
The desserts change a lot with the
weather, Fondren said. In summer it
was the fruit basket cake. The cheesecake is always popular once the weather
cools.
The caf offers wines from local vineyards as well as local artisanal beers.
The kitchen will see a remodel and
expansion in February, a project that
Fondren is thrilled to oversee.
We are limited in what we can serve
and how quickly we can get dishes to
the table right now, Fondren said. Our
new kitchen will be large and open, and
we will add additional seating.
Whether youre in the mood for a light
lunch, or for something sugar-plum
sweet, the Pottery World Caf is the perfect place to start a wonderful holiday
tradition.

f its Dec. 1st and youre thinking

about putting up a tree or stringing a
few strands of Christmas lights,
youre not alone. Each weekend in
December more holiday dcor
appears and everyone looks forward
to enjoying new displays.
But some people need months to prepare
for the holiday season while the rest of us
can only aspire to the creativity that serious
Christmas junkies exhibit.
Take Bill and Claudia Heinlein of
Loomis. While you were taking down
ghosts and goblins and eating Halloween
candy, the Heinleins were beginning their
annual teardown, a process in which
they remove everything from walls and put
away knickknacks to make room for Christmas displays that will take center stage this
month.
Its not a simple process. While many of us
have one Christmas tree and a few strands of
lights, the Heinleins have 260 bins and bags,
tagged and inventoried on a spreadsheet,

with every holiday item checked to make

sure its in good condition.
While most of us enjoy Thanksgiving
turkey, the Heinleins are likely giving
thanks for overhead garage storage and
plenty of large closets.
The couple has been married for a decade
after losing their spouses to illness. Today
they have combined his, hers and theirs
holiday items to create a winter wonderland
in every single room of their home.
Between them they have 6 children, 13
grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Of
course, each grandchild has a favorite collection, though you would be hard pressed to
choose the room that you love the most.
A room dedicated to snowmen? Theyve
got it. A room dedicated to glass Christmas
trees? Yep. A huge collection of Nativity sets?
Definitely.
Claudias most precious piece is the family
Nativity that her dad purchased for her mom
when Claudia was a child. The family had no
money and promised to forego gifts. When

The indoor showroom at Bushnells Nursery reflects the latest trend in holiday
decorations. Along with traditional Santas and snowmen, popular holiday decorations feature owls.
Claudias dad surprised mom with the Nativity, it was a moment that Claudia will never

Bill loves collecting and admits to

adding to the vast array of holiday items
by frequenting thrift shops throughout
the world. The couple loves to re-visit
their many travels through holiday
pieces that theyve collected.
Naturally, the couple wants to share
their displays with friends each year. As
the former Roseville mayor, Claudia
does a lot of entertaining.
We have hosted a Christmas party for
the Sacramento Air Force Association in addition to family
and church parties, Claudia
said.
Last year we had 88
women from church as
well as two priests, Bill
said. We had about ten
major parties in all, and its
definitely a lot of cleanup.
The couple leaves the displays up through January. It

takes the entire month of

February to put the home
right again.
The Heinleins call their
dcor homey, while
some people prefer a
designer Christmas and
spend time and resources
searching for perfect pieces.
At Bushnell Nurserys holiday open
house, decorators were out in force
when the nursery revealed their
Christmas merchandise.
According to Itzel Oros, a Bushnell
employee who helped decorate the
indoor gift shop, creating a beautiful
room takes time (the store closes for ten
days for the transformation).
Nursery owner Shelby Bushnell is the
force behind the fabulous displays.
Shelby uses Pinterest, catalogs and
ideas that she gets from showrooms
across the country, Oros said.

Rimma Tyukayeva has been offering facials, face and body waxing and body treatments for more than 14 years. She opened her own salon in March and now
offers eyelash extensions, eyebrow shaping and tinting as well as facials.
Although the summer sun is

as to promote on-going relationships in her salon.
While working with clients,

Christmas has long been considered the

time of giving.
This holiday season residents can give a toy,
pick up a gift and sample a favorite wine during
Placer Countys 5th annual Holiday in the Hills
celebration. Nineteen of Placer Countys wineries will participate in the weekend long toy
drive.
Wineries will be collecting toys for children in
need on Dec. 6 and 7. Visitors to the wineries
who bring a toy to a participating winery will
receive free tastes of the local wines produced in
Placer County.
Many of the Placer County wineries will have
vendors on site, offer discounts on wine and
make available wine-related gifts for purchase.
Jeff Evans at Bear River Winery in Meadow
Vista says, Bear River Winery will offer gift baskets of assorted chocolates available for purchase alongside our wine.
Dave Wagner at Pescanto said, We will have

holiday gifts, Wagner added.
Joe Ciotti said his winery will be offering wine
and dessert as well as port and dessert gift baskets for purchase. Visitors will also be able to
bottle their own wine during the Holiday in the
Hills weekend.
This bottling event is the opportunity to bottle a special holiday blend exclusive to this winery, the winery owner explained. Bottling an
exclusive holiday blend at Ciotti winery can be
a truly unique gift.

Many of the participating wineries

will be offering 10- to 20-percent discounts on wine purchases throughout
the weekend. The discount will vary, depending
on the purchase of single bottles or cases.
Some of the wineries will have gift cards available.
In addition to the gift baskets, wine discounts,
and gift cards, visitors can also choose to give
the gift of a wine club membership. Memberships range from $49 to $130. Wine club membership offers shipments and/or pickup of two
to four bottles of wine three to four times a year.
Members can also sample wines at the winery
throughout the year as well as discounts, exclusive releases, and access to wine club only
events.
Most wineries will be offering food and wine
pairing during the Holiday in the Hills event.
Guests will also be invited to participate in a
raffle to win a case of mixed bottles of wine from
the participating Placer County wineries.

Rabbi Yossi Korik and

his wife, Malkie, left
New York 10 years ago
to open the Chabad
House in Granite Bay.
Their professional
home is located in the
former fire station on
Douglas Boulevard.

hile Christmas trees and

Santa Claus get all the
attention this time of
year, Rabbi Yossi Korik and his
wife, Malkie are quietly sharing
the Jewish faith with Jews as well
as those interested in the culture
and traditions.
The couple, who left their
homes in Brooklyn, New York to
open the Chabad House in
Granite Bay nearly a decade ago,
decided while they were still
in college that they wanted to
make humanitarian causes their
lifes work.
After we were married we
decided that we wanted to
commit our lives to this calling,
Rabbi Korik said. But our
schooling our whole lives has
been oriented to this path.
The Rabbis post-graduate
education was focused on
rabbinical studies, including
attending rabbinical college.
Malkies background included
teaching at a Jewish school.
In addition, the couple has
volunteered in the community,
including volunteering with Folsom Prison chaplaincy, hospital
chaplaincy and with various
hospice groups.
Today the Rabbi, a soft-spoken,
bearded man with a quick smile,
said both he and his wife work
24/7. And thats no exaggeration
when you look at what they have
accomplished in recent years.
The place they now call their
professional home was once a
fire station on Douglas Boulevard. Today the garage that
housed fire trucks serves as both
a synagogue and an area where
youth are taught Jewish customs
and heritage through classes as
well as a daily pre-school.
The concrete and bricks are
gone, replaced by finished walls,
wood flooring and a large portrait of the Rebbe, the man who

30

DECEMBER GRANITE BAY VIEW

died 20 years ago and is credited

with starting Chabad (a Hebrew
acronym for wisdom, knowledge and understanding).
We were inspired by the
Rebbe, the Hebrew term for
Grand Rabbi. Hes the founder
of Chabad worldwide, from
Kathmandu, Nepal to South
America, Rabbi Korik said. His
idea to reach out to communities that may have nothing in
the way of a formal Jewish presence really affected us.
Today there are, by the Rabbis
estimate, about 3,500 Jewish residents in the South Placer area,
and seven Chabad Houses in the
greater Sacramento region.
The couple chose South Placer
after meeting with a Sacramento
Chabad leader while they were
still in New York. Their eldest
son, Mendel, was just seven
weeks old. Today Mendel is 10,
and he has 5 brothers and sisters, all of whom the Rabbi calls
wonderful blessings.
Chabad House offers all manner of services, including a Jewish pre-school, funeral services,
weddings and more. But the
organization offers outreach to
those in need, regardless of faith.
As a humanitarian group,
Chabad is inspired to be there
for all people, not to proselytize.
We are here for anyone who
needs help, be it hunger, homelessness, addiction whatever
the problem that someone
might have, he said. Chabad
has drug rehab and homeless
shelters all over the world.
The Rabbi and his wife place
importance not only on being a
presence for Jews, both in the
area and to those who are considering relocation to South
Placer, but also to educate those
who may be of Jewish descent
but do not know anything about
the culture as well as those who

are merely curious about the

religion.
Maybe they know that they
have a great grandparent who
was Jewish. We help them
explore what their heritage is
about and how it can impact
their lives, the Rabbi said. And
because its human nature to create stereotypes or notions about
others, certainly we encounter
questions. People are curious.
They may assume some things
incorrectly and we see this as an
important opportunity to break
those stereotypes.
Granite Bay resident Melissa
Neumann was thrilled to relocate her family to a community
where her kids could attend a
Hebrew school.
We moved here in 2012 and I
enrolled the boys in the school
to learn Hebrew and their heritage, Neumann said. Tradition and culture are what give us
a connection to our ancestors
and help us develop our own
sense of Jewish identity.
The center offers weekly prayer
service on Saturday, the Jewish
Sabbath. They also offer classes
for adults and children, including
a Torah class that is held in a
private home in Lincoln.
The centers Yiddish club is
popular, teaching Jews and nonJews the language and culture,
including songs, arts and foods.
Theres a religious Sunday
school for kids and a religious
pre-school on weekdays.
Of course, the center celebrates Jewish holidays with the
community and offers social
events and even a program
about the Holocaust in spring.
The center will host their
10th annual Chanukah event,
including Menorah lighting on
Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Roseville
Galleria. Visit Jewishroseville
.com for details.

Bradley Chee, a senior at Granite Bay

High, earned an international award
for his work on recreating the high
schools website.
ranite Bay High School senior
Bradley Chee plans to major in
information technology when
he reaches college. Like many
students, Chee is preparing for life after
graduation with the typical routine of
studying for tests, applying to colleges
and eagerly awaiting acceptance to his
dream university.
Unlike the average senior, however,
Chee was recently honored with an
international award for recreating the
Granite Bay High School website. The
award was given by the Web Marketing
Association, which named Chees innovative web design the best school website among thousands of competitors.
The 17-year-old said his interest in
technology has always been part of his
life. He looks up to his older brother,
who has held tech jobs at companies
such as Amazon and Evernote, and
encourages him to attend hack-a-thons.
With that support and encouragement, the decision to enroll in the GBiT
(Granite Bay information technology)
program his sophomore year with an
emphasis on software and systems
design was seamless.
GBiT was created in 2001 as a club and
then became a full program a few years
after. Within the program, students can
choose one of two pathways: Software

32

and Systems Design or Information and

Support Services. Students are then
required to take three classes, for example AP Computer Science and Information Technology Essentials, before
reaching the program capstone course
called Technology Leadership.
This semester, Chee is enrolled in the
Technology Leadership course, where
he manages a group of students who
assist in enhancing his version of the
school website.
His project has allowed other students to also get a lead in web design
and to help participate in this massive
project, said Jared Amalong, the information technology and computer science teacher at GBHS.
A part of Chees oversight is another
students collaboration with Google to
incorporate a detailed floor plan of the
school on the new site homepage. This
will allow first-time students and visitors
to use Google Maps to see locations of
campus buildings.
Amalong says the students are currently waiting for Google to approve the
floor plan.
We have a very talented group of students here. They are digital natives and
the motivation is already there. They just
need the tools. We are lucky to have the
support in the district, said Amalong.

DECEMBER GRANITE BAY VIEW

For Chee, the creation of his awardwinning website began this past summer. The idea to create a website came
to him when he realized that he wanted
to outdo the website he created for the
GBHS Future Business Leaders of America, a club he is now president of.
I wanted to do more and find a new
project that could be built on a grander
scale, so I looked towards the Granite
Bay High School site, said Chee, who
felt the schools current website was outdated and difficult to navigate.
Chee wanted to include three key
components in his site in order to make
it effective for the daily use of students
and faculty. This included creating a site
that was informational without being
text heavy, markets the schools programs successfully and functional with
a user friendly interface and fast
response time.
As Chee searched the Internet to find
inspiration for his site, he came across
webaward.org, a site hosted by the
Marketing Association. Each year Web
Awards names the best website designs
in more than 96 industries.
Chee saw the opportunity to enter the
project just two weeks before the competition deadline. After working more
than 600 hours throughout the summer
to complete the project, he successfully

submitted the application while on a

family trip to the Grand Canyon.
When visitors view Chees final submission at http://granitebayhigh.us/
they are welcomed to a homepage that
includes a vibrant motion picture background. The video, captured by media
students at the school, includes a panning birds eye view of the front of campus and football field.
Visitors can then select their page destination from the clear menu at the top
of the page, scrolling navigation bar or
enter in keywords into the search bar on
the middle of the page.
Chee received word in September that
he had won the WebAward for Best
School Website.
I thought it was a joke at first, he
said, I received the email during class
and looked back a few times to make
sure it was real.
To show off his hard work, Chee will
receive a 10-inch WebAward statue,
crafted by Society Awards, the same
company that creates award statues for
the Golden Globes, Country Music and
MTV Video Music Awards.
When asked about the most difficult
aspect in building his enhanced version
of the GBHS Website, Chee said there
were none. He loved every moment of
working on the project.

LOCAL STUDENTS BRING HOME

NATIONAL TAEKWONDO TITLE
he 2014 United World Taekwondo
Association International Championships ended in Reno this month,
drawing competitors from across the
country. Two of them, ages 7 and 12,
were students of Rosevilles The Studio
Martial Arts & Fitness who earned the
title of National Champion in forms, or
fixed series of movements for learning
defensive and offensive techniques.
Both students train under sixth-degree
black belt Master Amitis Pourarian, owner
of The Studio.
Seven-year-old Miko Cooper said she
trained hard for the tournament by
attending extra classes and practicing
every day, including weekends.
Even though Im only 7 years old, it
feels great to be a National Champion,
Miko said. Being a martial artist and a
black belt has helped me in school, in
my after-school sports and even playing
the piano.
When asked what advice she would
give other kids interested in learning
Taekwondo, she offered the following:
Train hard, set goals and never give up,
even when you dont feel like going to
class.
Mikos next goal?
Winning National Champion in both
forms and sparring!
Twelve-year-old Amir Khatib trained
by practicing his form and sparring in
class several times a week, as well as
practicing at home.
I feel very proud of my achievement,
but I would never have reached this
great goal if it wasnt for my Taekwondo
instructor, Master Amitis Pourarian,
he said.
His advice for other kids interested in
martial arts was to never give up and
always persevere if you are faced with an
obstacle Practice as much as you can,
and eventually it will pay off. Amir said
his next plan is to become a third-degree
black belt and keep his status as a
National Champion in forms, though
he is also thinking about returning to
compete in the sparring division.
For more information about The Studio
Martial Arts & Fitness, call (916) 258-5425,

Christmas ode
to gardeners

s I write this months article

for the Granite Bay View, I
am sitting in Wisconsin
where the weather is a toasty
35 degrees. Undaunted by the
frigid temperatures I have been
inspired to pen a short poem
for the garden lover on your
Christmas list. Here goes!

Tim
Krumal

Twas a month before Christmas

And all through the house,
There were gifts being wrapped
but not for the mouse.
My shopping was done
I beamed with such pride,
No last minute stress
would I have to abide.
When all of a sudden

I looked at my list,
Oh no, I exclaimed
There was someone Id missed.
If I forget this old friend
there would not be a pardon,
What does one give
To one who lives in their garden?
A shovel, a rake
A specialty tour,
Of a far away garden
Of some boutique manure?
How about gloves,
Or good pruning shears,
Something made well
To last through the years?
A nice bird feeder
Along with some seed,
To welcome in nature.

What more could one need?

A good hearty plant
That will grow good and tall,
Maybe one that lays flat
Or grows up a wall.
How about a hat
To protect from the sun,
Not one thats boring
But one that says, fun!
A yearly subscription
To some magazine
with garden ideas
they may not have seen.
Some brand new ideas
What could be finer,
Than a whole new backyard
From some great designer.
A mower, some boots

Perhaps a new hose,

Plant stakes in all sizes
Theyll love some of those.
A gift certificate
From a favorite plant source
Or soil amendment
That comes from a horse.
Whatever gift choice
On the card I will share,
Merry Christmas to you,
This was chosen with care.
So this December, remember
Those who makes gardens pretty.
And for great gift ideas
Just remember this ditty.

Merry Christmas!

Be Unique This Holiday

Season; Become a Locavore
F

retting over finding

the right gift this holiday season?
Instead of spending
money on trivial items, be
unique and give something useful. Thoughtfully

selected foods can be

some of the best holiday
gifts.
Im not talking about
those pre-packaged baskets full of stale crackers,
hard candies, strange

sauces and processed

cheeses that will probably
get tossed out with the
wrapping paper. Im suggesting you become a
locavore, someone who
buys food from a local

Paula
Hendricks

vendor, typically within a

30-mile radius of your
home.
Some of the most memorable gifts I have ever
received were food items.
One year, a friend gave
me a delicious locally produced olive oil and vinegar set. I liked it so much
that I now use the companys products exclusively.
Last year, my girlfriend
gave me a huge leg of
lamb she bought from a
nearby rancher. I have to
admit, I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but it
ended up being a delicious centerpiece for a
festive dinner party.
What family wouldnt
enjoy a seasonal vegetable delivery service?
You probably know a
couple that would love a
beautiful set of local olive
oil and vinegar. I bet your
closet chef friends love
specialty foods, such as
unique seasonings, salts,
and sauces.
Its a bonus for you as
you will probably be
invited to share in the
foods they create with
your gift.
Want to give something
to your colleagues, boss
or hairdresser? Wine,
nuts, or chocolates usually hit the spot. Give a
cooking class gift with a
local restaurant, a wine
tour or wine and paint
class.
Personalize your gift.
Wrap it up on a platter,
in a bowl or a spice box
and indicate where you
purchased it. With this
approach, you will have a
lot more fun giving and

Its weight
gaining season

ts here, whether we are ready

or not. Just look at the seasonal shelves in your favorite
store. Retailers like to call it Holiday Season, but lets be more
accurate.
Weight Gain season has
launched and runs straight
through New Years.
The next two months will
bring ample opportunities to expand our waistlines. Of course,
the choice is ours.
Why discuss it now? Because
now is our opportunity to plan
for the weeks ahead. Once the
craziness begins, we will be too
busy to put a plan into action.
So lets take this moment of
clarity, this calm before the
storm, to outline a two-part plan
that will save your waist from

Deb
Skelton

unwanted holiday inches.

Part One:
Our Exercise Plan.

Exercise is the first thing people cut when they get busy and
the holiday season is notorious
for empty gyms. This year do
something different. Obligate
yourself to exercise.
Promising yourself wont do it;
we need to make that promise
to others so that we wont drop
the ball.
Sign up to work with a fitness
expert. This is the perfect solution for consistent, challenging
and effective workouts. Ill give
you the attention and assistance
that you need to power through
the holidays in better shape than
ever. Talk about motivating!

Join a class. We wont be as

effective exercising on our own
during the busy holiday season,
so join a class for accountability.
Find something challenging
that gets your heart rate elevated and uses strength training.
Get a serious exercise buddy.
Some friends can be an awesome help while others end up
pulling us down. When looking
for an exercise buddy, consider
the following questions:
Do they share your fitness goals?
Are they fairly encouraging?
Do they give up easily?
Are they at your fitness level?

Part Two: Our Diet Plan.

The holidays offer ample

opportunities to indulge, so we
need to hammer down some
guidelines before hitting that
buffet line.
Im not saying that we
shouldnt indulge in any seasonal treats, but use moderation. Dont use the holidays as
an excuse to eat until the point
of being uncomfortable. Will we
really miss that bloated feeling?
Decide which treats to cut out

this year.
Dont bring edible treats to
the office or parties. We know
the leftovers will come home
and well end up eating far more
than our share. This year do
everyone a favor by not gifting
fattening treats.
When faced with a buffet line,
lets load our plates first with
greens, vegetables and lean
meats before adding breads
and heavier foods.
Also drink water with each
meal and keep alcoholic beverages to a minimum of two
drinks.
Beware of holiday drinks.
Most are brimming with calories. Hot drinks from coffee
shops, cocktails at parties and
creamy egg nog are enjoyable,
but are filled with empty calories. Stick with hot tea or
unsweetened coffee.
Everywhere we go during the
holiday season brings us faceto-face with a plate of sweets. To
avoid being a bore without
adding inches to our waist, try
the one treat rule. Each time
youre in a social situation that

involves sweets just eat one and

enjoy your treat slowly.
We dont have to gain weight
this holiday season. The key is
our mindset.
If we approach the holidays
with the mindset of I deserve
to indulge and I shouldnt have
to exercise, then well enter
2015 a few pounds heavier, a little less healthy, and with lower
energy than ever before.
I believe that we deserve better. I believe that we should
enter 2015 in better shape than
we are today, healthier than
weve been in a long time, and
with more energy than we
thought possible. What a wonderful present to ourselves.
I personally vow to give up
egg nog this holiday season; it
just makes me feel bloated anyway! What empty calorie food
will you pass on this holiday
season?

Tips to help seniors

enjoy the holidays

oliday gatherings with

my extended family
include multiple generations, multiple pets,
comforting food, abundant
spirits, and lots of warmth,
laughter and fun. I am
richly blessed. If youll be
gathering this holiday season with a variety of ages
and abilities, the following
ideas may enhance the fun.

Plan Ahead

Travel: If traveling by air

or train, some preliminary

planning can make a world
of difference. Check ahead
to see if wheelchairs are
available from curb to seat
or what procedures there
are for checking a wheelchair or walker in as well as
how to retrieve it at your
destination.
Wearing and bringing
along extra incontinence
items will relieve anxiety,
the need to rush (risking a
fall) and minimize the need
to change clothing in tiny
airplane bathrooms or
public restrooms.
Be sure to carry medications with you as well as
snacks. I once sat next a
man who nearly slipped
into a diabetic coma
because of flight delays and
lack of planning his medications and dietary needs.

DECEMBER GRANITE BAY VIEW

Accommodate
limitations

Tripping Hazards: Take a

close look at tripping hazards in the areas where
family will be gathering.
Look for throw rugs, childrens toys, pet toys/beds
or gifts around the tree
that might impede walking safely. Clear pathways
likely used by those with
balance problems or difficulty walking.
Lighting: Glowing lights
from a Christmas tree or
candles burning provide
lovely ambiance, but may
not be enough light for a
senior to navigate safely
with a walker or cane.
Be mindful of safety first
even using night lights
in hallways and bathrooms to avoid walking
without adequate lighting.

Noise Level

Hearing aids are terrific,

but background noise can
still make it difficult to
hear. When there is conversation, you might think
about turning off the holiday music and keeping
multiple conversations in a
small space to a minimum.
Speak slowly. My mother
often says, I cant listen as
fast as you talk. So be
aware of pace as well.

Susan
Feldman

Dont you
remember?

If an older friend or
family member has memory impairment, try to
avoid questions or comments that could put
them on the spot and
embarrass them. Younger
family members may
need some coaching here.

Take time to listen

As extended family
gathers, its easy to
become engaged in lively
conversation that may
exclude a senior.
Take time to listen to
stories of holidays past
from the viewpoint of
senior members of the
family. Asking What was
Christmas like when you
were little? or What holiday traditions were you
raised with? may inspire
wonderful conversation.
Cherish family time and
embrace the seniors in
your life. I wish you Happy Holidays and a very
Happy New Year.

to live in a culture telling us that losing weight is as simple as exercising more and

Chambers of Commerce
a lifeline to businesses

Lori

he local chamber of
commerce has been a
crucial element to the
local areas business community. Chambers have
existed for more than two
centuries in the U.S. and are
more important during
prosperous times because
we provide a range of offerings despite economic
challenges.
Here at the Roseville
Chamber of Commerce, we
have made a top priority in
providing our members
with reputable creditability,
strategic networking events,
powerful advocacy and
commitment to paving the
way for young professionals
in our region.
Strong leadership is fun-

damental to drive economical growth, and ultimately

make the city a greater
place to live and work.

Susan Rohan,
City of Roseville Mayor

The
Chamber
is
resource rich for a small
business like mine. My
clients and business services are chamber members
and I rely on the chamber
for information and advocacy on issues affecting me.
And as the Citys Vice
Mayor and Mayor the past
four years, partnering with
the chamber on business
retention and attracting

new jobs infuses private

sector ingenuity into public
sector goals. The community wins.
Ryan Haney,
CEO, Holdings, LLC

The Roseville Chamber

of Commerce has been
invaluable to our company.
About a year ago, we
started to participate in
chamber events and immediately noticed a large
increase in the communitys awareness of our small
company.
Within a few months
our vacancies had been
filled. We had to start a waiting list to get a suite in our
building. In addition, my
LinkedIn connections went

Ryan Haney

from 400 to 800 plus.

Furthermore, we have
been able to save $300 to
$400 per month on our
advertising budget!
Ashley Harris,

Ignite has provided me a

place to grow and thrive as a
young professional. Not
only am I able to exercise
many of my skills, but I am

those
involved.
I look forward to reflecting back to our golden
years down the road.

The chamber team is
very welcoming and every
event has yielded great contacts. Im excited about
increasing my community

presence, thanks to the

After a comprehensive
self-review, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce awarded
the Roseville Chamber of
Commerce with a Five-Star
Accreditation last month.
This prestigious honor puts
us among the top 1% of
chambers nationwide.
This past year, the staff,
board, and volunteers of

the Roseville Chamber

spent countless hours completing the accreditation
process. Our task: demonstrate competency in nine
core areas ranging from
finance to facilities.
The result of our hardwork is evidenced by this
impressive rating. But in
truth, we should all be
extraordinarily proud of this
milestone achievement. It
was a true team effort.

outhern California has a lot to offer for someone seeking a good

long vacation. Its far enough away from home that you have no
choice, but far enough to leave your worries behind. On that same
note, you are far from home and, if you dont go about it the right
way, it could easily turn into a nightmare.
My most recent trip to SoCal went off without a hitch, thanks to some
advance planning and a few helpful tricks.

Travel time

Obviously there are pros and cons to every method of travel. To get down
to Southern California, youve pretty much got three main options: plane,
train or car.
To find the one thats right for you and your crew, you have to consider a
couple of factors: How much money do you want to spend on getting
there? How much time do you want to spend in transit? And do you like
your friends enough to ride in a confined space for six or seven hours?
My three friends and I decided that we wanted to spend as little money
as possible, and that we probably like each other enough to brave a long
car ride in my small car. And the ride was actually fun both ways, thanks
to the 596-song, 37.5-hour playlist that we helped put together.

Disneyland and Disneys California

Adventure get decked out in the
holiday spirit from the middle of
November until the new year.
COURTESY PHOTOS DISNEY

The happiest place on Earth

Once we arrived in Los Angeles, the

first thing on the agenda was Disneyland.
And as any Disney fan will tell you, there
are little tips and tricks to help you make
the most of your stay. During this trip I
learned a couple of tricks that made a
world of difference inside the park.
Bring your own water. Disneyland and
Disneys California Adventure totals a
massive 227 acres. Staying hydrated is
very important when you spend all day
walking around the two parks. But since
Disney isnt above charging an arm and a
leg for a bottle of water, its smart to bring
your own or at least save the bottle once
youve finished it. There are plenty of
drinking fountains throughout the parks
that offer unlimited water for the dirtcheap price of free.
Bring sunscreen and Chapstick. It may
not feel like it when youre having so
much fun, but youre outside, exposed to
the elements, for up to 15 hours each day.
If you forget one of these two things at
home, youre sure to regret it at some

48

point during the day.

Arrive early for the shows and parades.

The viewing areas for the shows and

parades fill up early and they fill up fast.
And even though Disneyland is pretty
efficient in making sure every guest has a
good time, they have yet to figure out
efficient seating for the shows. I stared at
the back of a mans head for the entire
showing of World of Color. So if you care
about seeing the shows (which you
should), make sure you claim your spot
in advance.
Hit up the best food spots. There are so
many places you can eat in the Disney
parks. While most of them are pricier
than they should be, there are some with
fairer prices and some that are worth the
extra cash. The Blue Bayou restaurant is
located inside the Pirates of the
Caribbean ride, so when you dish out $30
to $50 for one plate, no matter how delicious, youre really paying for the experience. Other classics include the bread
bowls in New Orleans Square, the corn
dogs near the entrance of Disneyland

DECEMBER GRANITE BAY VIEW

and Dole Whips outside of the

Tiki Room. California Adventure
has some culinary gems as well,
with a real Ghirardelli store in
Pacific Wharf and an underwater dining experience at Ariels
Grotto.

all
without

Download helpful
apps. Put your smart

phone to good use

and make sure you
get a wait-time app.
We downloaded Disneyland Wait Times
Free and it saved us
so much time, effort
and, most importantly,
pointless
walking. The wait
times are constantly
updated and will let you
know instantly if a ride
has temporarily closed or if
the wait time is only five minutes. It helps
you plan out where you want to get a Fast
Pass and where you want to wait in line,

hav-

ing to leave that nice bench you found in

the meantime. I definitely wont ever do
Disney without it again.

COURTESY UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

The Studio Tour at Universal Studios takes you through the backlot where they film popular movies and television shows.

Where the movie

magic happens

Universal Studios Hollywood is

also worth a stop, especially if
youve never been before. Now if
you started your trip with a jampacked three-day Disney experience like we did, youre pretty tired
of walking around and waiting in
lines by the time you get there. But
if you can toughen up just for one
more day, these lines are definitely
worth your time.
Universal Studios is good at what
they do, and movie magic comes to
life around you on rides based on
Transformers, Revenge of the
Mummy, Despicable Me, The
Simpsons, Shrek, and my personal favorite Jurassic Park.
And if youre really not feeling
the stuck-in-line-for-an-hour thing
anymore, make an effort to get
there right when the park opens.
Wait times were as low as 10 or 15
minutes and up to an hour after
the park was open. We managed to
get all the best rides in before the
crowds started pouring in.

Of course some people arent all

about the roller coasters, and
theres plenty to see and do for
those folks as well. The park has
several shows and demonstrations,
like Universals Animal Actors,
Special Effects Stage and WaterWorld. There are also plenty of
real props on display, including the
DeLorean that was used in Back
to the Future.
But the Studio Tour is definitely
the fan favorite, and for good reason. The tram tour takes you
through the back lot of Universal
Studios where they have filmed
and still do film some of the most
popular movies and shows. The
tour also makes a stop to give its
passengers a very intense 3-D
experience with King Kong 360 3D.

More to do, more to see

Of course there is no shortage of

things to do around Los Angeles
and youd be hard-pressed to get it
all done within your vacation, so
youre forced to pick and choose

whatever looks the most interesting.

We ended up buying tickets to
the Medieval Times Dinner and
Tournament in Buena Park, which
was a blast.
We were seated around an arena,
where they had actors do live
jousting on real horses right there
in front of you. Your servant
came around and served you your
meal in a couple of courses. In
keeping with the theme, we werent
granted any silverware, since it
wasnt invented in medieval times
So we munched on roasted chicken and baked potatoes with our
hands as men in armor
fought to the death in
the arena.
While youre in the
area, you dont want to
miss out on the opportunity to visit some of the
famous and recognizable
locations and landmarks.
Checking out the
Hollywood sign
and walking

the Walk of Fame are classic activities that everyone should experience at least once. Driving around
Beverly Hills, Sunset Boulevard,
Calabasas and Downtown LA was
worth it as well, at least just for a
change of pace after all the commercialized attractions.
We decided to end our last day of
vacation on the beach at Santa
Monica Pier. We walked up and
down the iconic pier and found a
restaurant right on the beach to
close out our week in Southern
California.

GRANITE BAY VIEW
