New Years Eve: 2009
A close publisher friend once told me that the ultimate New Year’s Eve party is on the Las
Vegas strip in Nevada. From his description, every casino on the strip tries to out-do the other
with fireworks. “It’s better than watching the ball drop in New York City,” he elaborated.
Ginger and I did something we haven’t done in years on New Year’s Eve. We enjoyed dinner
and a movie all alone. In fact, Ginger reminded me several times how nice it was to be by
ourselves. Now don’t get me wrong, we still enjoy the company of closest friends -- but as we
grow older, we find it more difficult in scheduling.
Daughter number one (Kelly) invited us to her New Year’s Eve (house) party, but we opted
to be by ourselves. Making last minute dinner reservations was trying, but we made it into
Harrison’s Restaurant in Tipp City.
At our age, eating past 6:00 p.m. can be challenging, but it was 9:00 p.m. or nothing. Ginger
ordered country fried steak, and I ordered the 6 oz. fillet. The bar area was jumping with a
60’s singer and our table was directly across from the entertainment in an adjacent room. I
think Ginger knew every word to every song he sang.
We finished dinner around 10:30 p.m. Our movie started at 10:50. Thank goodness we chose
Huber Heights. I chose the movie Precious. I had read great reviews, and actually thought it
was about a teenager from the projects that made it to the big time through her singing and
dancing. Boy, was I wrong!
Betsy Sharkey (film critic) for the L.A. Times says it this way:
"Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire" will challenge you, but it will also move
you as it rocks between the horrific realities and escapist fantasies of 16-year-old Claireece
Precious Jones (impressive newcomer Gabourey Sidibe), with a life so besieged that a moth-
er's rage and a father's rapes are what passes for love.
Ginger told me, after our viewing, that she just about walked out after the first 10 minutes.
The language was so bad, she had to remember that the film depicts the life of a teenager in
the Harlem projects and under the welfare programs that are intended to keep the recipients
right there. She later disclosed that she was glad that she stayed with it.
Sharkey writes: Fortunately for us, Precious has a very rich and playful imagination. When
bad things happen, and they so often do, the images dissolve into music video moments, or
in one case a Sophia Loren film, where Precious is loved, respected and always in the spot-
light. While reality is Harlem gritty, her fantasies are mostly glam and glitz, and, like
dreams, vanish all too soon.
Precious has won the 2009 Satellite Awards for one of the Top 10 Films in 2009.
Personally, I would save your money. You don’t need Hollywood to tell you how dreadful the
Harlem projects can be. If you do, read the novel “Push” by Sapphire.

BRADFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Bradford Public Library has many different services to offer the public. One of the nice fea-
tures is the LARGE MEETING ROOM, which can be used by non-profit organizations and by
the general public. It is a great place for meetings, showers, classes, etc. You do need to come in and
fill out a request form and get your event on the calendar.
The HISTORY ROOM at the library is a fascinating place! You’ll find the history of
Bradford, along with pictures. Volunteers help with clipping newspaper articles for the History
Room. If you’d like to help, contact the library.
Some library services offered include both black/white and color copies, lamination, an Ellison
machine with dies, and a faxing service. There is a binding machine, as well as new computers with
Internet service. The library is wireless, so you can also use your laptop. A library card is required
for the use of the library’s computers.
The QUILTING GROUP meets the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. All levels of quil-
ters are welcome to come enjoy the fun and fellowship.
The SISTERS ‘N SPIRIT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP meets every second and
fourth Monday at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come, read, and enjoy the Christian fiction
titles that will be discussed. They welcome guest speakers, and enjoy mini-trips and just spending
time together.
IF YOU LOVE TO KNIT, come to the library on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6
p.m. There is a group of ladies who love to knit, share their talents, and offer help, if needed.
STORY TIME is each Thursday at 11 a.m. Children can take part in stories, games, songs, and
crafts. All 3-5 year olds are welcome!
