Regarding previous comment 3, this submittal was much

better but I did not see a single arrow or indication stating
what size strainer was being provided except for the 3
flow v. pressure line was outlined. Either provide a typed
in or hand written size above the Model 2596 Cast
Strainers or draw an arrow pointing to the 3 in the chart
titled Approximate Dimensions on the third page of the
strainer information.
Regarding previous comment 6, what I am looking for is
the DuraWedge Element opening dimensions (cut sheet
states 1/16, 1/32, 0.015 available for a 3 but I dont see
any indication of which one is being provided. Draw an
arrow or box in which one is being provided. Also, state
what mesh equivalent is being provided.

COMMENT

Regarding previous comment 7 which read Specified

coating requires a polyurethane enamel over an epoxy.
Provide specified coating and provide data sheets on the
epoxy and the polyurethane enamel. Data sheets should list
compatible under and over coats. In this resubmittal I see
the information on Carboline 890 and the statement that
Rust-Oleum 9100 System Epoxy Is Considered Equal
but I still dont see any indication that the specified
polyurethane enamel top coat will be provided over the
epoxy nor data sheets on it to demonstrate compatibility
between the epoxy coat and this top coat.

The Bussmann CC-TRON" (FNQ-R) was designed to meet
the needs of control circuit transformer protection.
Current-limitation protects down stream components
against damaging thermal and magnetic effects of shortcircuit currents.
High inrush time-delay, Control circuit transformers can
experience inrush currents up to 85 times their full-load
current rating. FNQ-R fuses can be sized according to
NEC and UL requirements and still allow the high inrush
currents, with significantly more time-delay than the UL
minimum value of 12 seconds at 200% for Class CC fuses.

End Brackets
End brackets are used on both ends of tile rail assembly to hold the blocks in place and can
accept maming tags to serve as a group marker. WeN 35/2 brackets are the same profile as
WOU 2.5 to WDU 16N terminal blocks and do not require an end plate. The eN 35 performs
the same function as the WeN 35/2, but is smaller, and requires an and plate rNAP) to cover
the side of the terminal blocl<.The WeN 36/1 is used with larger W-Serles blocks. (\NOU 16-120).

Series 07
Pilot Devices
The economical solution
for high performance
control, signaling and
switching applications

Sprecher + Schuh's rugged D7 pilot

devices offer maximum flexibility and
a wide choice for all applications. This
22mm line is aesthetically appealing and modularly designed to make
assembly and interchangeal)i1ity easy.
The D7 operators are available in two
different body styles to meet every application need. Both operators exhibit
a new lower profile stylish appearance while maintaining the rugged
performance necessary for demanding
environments.

Two operator types

D7P is a plastic operator with a captive
black plastic front bezel. Con<tructed
of high-grade thermoplastics the D7P
1s the corrosion resistant solution for
harsh environments.
For super tough applications, the
D7M has a die-cast zinc housing and
mounting ring for rugged durability.
Both are finished with corrosion resistant chrome plating. The D7M also
feamres a captive shiny metal bezel for
a polished appearance.

Less inventory, more

choices
DlP- PlasTIc housing with a black
plastic captive bezel.

D7M- Die-cast metal housing and locking ring

wi1h shiny metal captive bezel.

Sprecher + Schnh offers D7 pushbuttons in a wide range of devices

- from selector ""itches to multifunction pushbuttons. Their modular
design keeps rhe number of required
parts to a minimum, while offering
multiple functions and a variety of
style and color combination.'.
Back-of-panel components can be
combined with all front elements,
making the D7 line extremely flexible.
This approach reduces inventory, yet
provides virtually any configuration
you require.

Quick, easy installation

A standard anti-rotation tab keeps
front elements from turning or fulling
off the control panel, making it possihle for one pelSon to install all D7
components even if the front and rear
panel are not accessible at the same
time. A cenrral mounting ring allows

H2

for quick installation and removal of

all D7 operators. All back-of-panel
components including contact blocks
and power nlodule eienlCl1t.<.; snap-on
and are readily accessible and interchangeable withour removjng the pilot
device from the panel.

Tool-less mounting latch

The D7 "tool-less" mounting latch
mates the front element with the
contact blocks and other back-of-panel
components. The mounting latch is
available in a plastic and metal design.
The latches are easily installed with
a "click" and removed by pushing a
rotating collar to
the right. Quick,
reliable and strong,
ie's the best pilot
device nlOuntlng
latch available in the
industry.

Long electrical
and mechanical life
Most D7 operators have a mechanical of ten million operations ... five
million contact blocks. Electrical Ufe
ranges from 500,000 cycles at 3A to
ten million at O.lA. The D7line is also
electronics compatible with self-cleaning contacts.

Environmental ratings
Front elements, including pushbutt0118 1 mushroom operators and selector
switches, are IP 66 protection against
subnlersion, oil and dirt, making thenl
reliable in the toughest industrial environmelm. Metal operators are Type
411 3 and Type 4/4X113 for plastic
operators.

This illustration shows typical combinations

available depending on tile front and back-ofpanel components chosen. Up to six con11lct
blocks can be used on non-lilumina1Bd devices.

IO-Model
2596 strainer

OPERATION
The debris laden dirty fluid enters
the strainer's large bottom chamber
where the line velocity Is reduced.
Flow continues upward, passing
radially through the 'sealed' screen
element. Unwanted material is
trapped on the inside of the screen.
The flow is uninterrupted and the
strained clean fluid continues Its path
Into the correctly proportioned outer
annulus of the strainer body and exits
through the outlet nozzle.
Backwash cleaning is accomplished
by utilizing the pressure differential
between line pressure and atmosphere. A hollow, full flow backwash
arm extending the full length of the.
screen element rotates slowly inside
of the screen and Is piped to atmosphere. The port shce Is in close proximity to the screen, and its opening is
equivalent to the '(lebris collector'
sections created by the convolutions
and/or the vertical collector bars In
the element.

When cleaning is required the

automatic backwash valve opens the
system to atmosphere, causing a
high velocity reverse flow across the
isolated section of the screen. Dirt
and debris are flushed from this
segment of the soreen into the
backwash arm and out of the strainer
via the backwash piping. During the
backwashing oycle the main flow is
uninterrupted and continues to be
strained in tha normal manner. A
manual throttling valve is recommended after the control valve. Thus,
backwash flow can be regulated and
balanced for optimum performance
and reduction of water loss.
An automatic control system
consisting of an electrical panel,
actuated valves and a differential
pressure switch operates the
strainer. The cleaning cycle is set
to activate on a timed cycle with a
differential pressure override to protect against system upset conditions.
The control system will automatically
close the backwash valve after the
screen element is properly cleaned.
The unit can also be operated manually or in the continuous backwash
mode. See modes of operation on
page 28 for additional information.

ApPLICATIONS
Eaton Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers
are typically used in a wide variety of
applications such as cooling water from
ponds, fakes or rlvers, cooling towers,
plant service water, boiler feed water,
secondary effluent, irrigation, and
municipal water intake for equipment
protection. Continuous flow is assured
and protection is provided for nozzles,
pumps, valves, heat exchangers and
other process equipment.
These high quality strainers can also handle
other liquids with water-like viscosities such
as water based machine tool coolant
successfully. The limiting factors are the level
of solids content and the ability to handle the
backwash discharge flow.
Eaton Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers will
significantly reduce maintenance costs, due
to a design that reduces the number of
intemal parts to ensure the strainer is easy
to access and maintain.
Eaton Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers
provid e uninterrupted flow, a major
consideration in plant operation. They are
a worthwhile investment in applications
where frequent cleaning of large size
lines or Installations in remote locations
Is encountered. These strainers also
provide worry-free operation. Unexpected
problems such as high system dITferential
pressure due to a dirtY strainer basket
resulting in downtime or unscheduled
maintenance' will not occur.
Eaton Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers
are ideal as replacements for both
simplex or duplex manual strainers
because of their reliability and low
maintenance requIrements.

DuraWedge" Element
DuraWedge0 is a nonc!ogging, rugged stainless
steel straining element constructed from veeshaped profile wire. Available only from Eaton.
Features
Two point contact straining from the 'smooth"
side prevents plugging or packing of debris
and particles.
Effective dislodging of dirt, debris and fibers
from the element during backwash. This is
accomplished by the increased velocity of the
reverse flow (during backwash) from the
'open side" of the vee.
Fiber stapling is reduced because of smooth
surfaces and the design contour of the
profile wire.
Vertical collector bars form spaces to accu
mulate debris and dirt, preventing snow
plowing of materials by the rotating backwash
arm and port shoe.

Note: Screen element selection is important. A smaller than required opening will reduce the effiCiency of the system.
Please contact Eaton for prompt expert assistance to ensure proper element/strainer selection.

Straining Elements

Pressure and Temperature

There are three kinds of Eaton straining elements:

convoluted perforated plates, convoluted sinter-bonded mesh and DuraWedge'.

Cast Iron and Ductile Iron are rated at

150 psi @150'F.

For coarse straining applications, such as raw water

intakes from lakes, ponds and streams, the convoluted perforated elements will perform well and offer the
most economical unit pricing.

Fabricated Units are rated at 150 psi @150'F,

however other ratings are available, consult Eaton.

The minimum operating pressure is 20 PSIG.

On other applications, where pre-screening of the fluid

has already been performed, but finer filtering of the
fluids is desired, then the sinter-bonded mesh element
may be selected.
On applications where fibrous materials will be
encountered in the fluid being strained, then a
DuraWedge element may help to minimize the Impact
of the fibers stapling to the screen.
standard available opening sizes are shown on page
26. The rule of thumb in determining the opening size
is to be 1/2 of whatever opening is being protected.

Debris
Cleaning of the straining element is accomplished by
utilizing the pressure differential between line pressure
and atmosphere. When the backwash valve is opened
to atmosphere during the cleaning cycle, a portion of
the strained fluid reverses flow back across the section
of element being cleaned, lifts off the debris, and
ejects the debris out of the strainer.
sticky or greasy debris are more difficult to backwash
and may require longer backwash cycle durations.
Sand, dirt and pipe scale should backwash easily. The
quantity of debris coming Into the strainer can also be
a problem. Insure that the volume of the suspended
solids does not exceed 200 ppm or 0.02 percent. If the
application requires heavier loading than this, consult
Eaton.

Backwash Requirements
The quantity of fluid required to clean a straining element is dependent upon the type and quantity of
debris. Under normal conditions, approximately 5 percent of the line flow will be used for cleaning of the
straining element during the cleaning cycle. The loss of
fluid 'through the backwash can be minimized by
adding a manual throttling valve downstream of the
automated valve.

Design and Operation

Eaton Automatic Control Systems (ACS) are specifioalIy designed to monitor and operate the backwash
cleaning system of Eaton
Automatio Strainers. They are
simple to operete, reliable and
easily maintained. The design
allows field adjustments to suit
the demands of the service
conditions, ensuring effective
cleaning with a minimum use
o..:.."-'-~..,.l-_ _ _- ,
of backwash fluid.

Modes of Operation
By operating the selector switch, the controls can be
easily switched to either of two modes: automatio
intermittent or continuous backwashing.
The automatic intermittent mode Is adjustable by setting the timer in the panel that controls the frequency
of backyvashlng and the 'open" time of the backwash
valve. The settings will depend on the individual installation. Predicting average times is difficult because
conditions vary. Experience will dictate the optimal settings. Field adjustments should be mada to suit the
application,

Three basic systems,

ACS-1, ACS-2 and
ACS-3 are available.
Optional designs to
meet
specific
requirements with special wiring arrangements, panel
boxes (NEMA 7, 9), control valves, and air actuation
among others, can be furnished.

The differential pressure switch must also be set. Two

PSID above the clean reading is the setting recommended. This switch will compensate for sudden high
loadings by overriding the time cycle and initiating
backwash should the differential pressure rise above
the programmed setting. A secondary delay timer will
continue the cleaning for 60 seconds beyond that
point. The time delay can be varied from 1 to 150 seconds.

ACS-1 Standard Control System Components

This system features a NEMA 4 rated (water and dust
tight) panel box complete with adjustable timer, differential pressure override, 10 amp control relay for backwash valve activation, display lights to indicate Power
On - Backwash Valve Open - and High Differential
Pressure. A selector switoh Is also included to manually control the backwash valve functions of Off or OnAuto. The panel also has contact terminals for a motor
starter and an external alarm connection. The panel
requires 110 VAC input and Is CSA approved, UL
approval is available as an option. The panel has a differential pressure switoh and an electrically-actuated
ball valve that oontrols the backwash function. With
Model 596LPD for low pressure systems, an electrically-operated butterfy valve is included to control the
external source of cleaning water.
ACS-2 Standard Control System Components
This system has all of the features of the ACS-1 and
includes a motor starter in addition to the other standard equipment.
ACS-3 Standard Control System Components
This system has all of the features of the ASC-2 system and includes a 460V/120V dual voltage transformer.
Motors
An electric motor and gear box are furnished as part of
the strainer. The'standard TEFC motor is 120/220V,
Single phase 60 Hz, or 230/460V Three Phase 60 Hz,
at customer option. other motors are available.

The continuous backwashlng mode is positive, efficient

and practical where the backwashing fluid can be
recycled to its source. It is also desirable, and sometimes necessary, to use this mode when very high solid
loadings are encountered.
This mode is initiated by placing the backwash switch
on the panel in the 'on" position. Manual operation
the system can be controlled with this switch, opening
or closing the backwash valve as desired. Returning it
to 'autd' will restore the Intermittent cycling as set.

of

In both the automatic intermittent and continuous

backwashing modes the backwash arm oontinuously
rotates at a low 2-4 RPM.
Differential Pressure Switch
A diaphragm-type differential pressure switch is a
standard component in all Control Systems. It provides
proteotion for the strainer and element, initiating backwash should a high differential pressure occur
between timed cleaning intervals.
Backwash Valve
Electrically actuated (115 VAC/60 Hz) ball valves are
also standard In the Control Systems. Materials of construction are suitable for water service. Other materials, valve types and pneumatic actuation are optional.

Standard Design Parameters

2. Inlet flow velocity to the strainer should be in the 6

to 10 feet per minute range. There may be
applications where the operating flow will fall out
side the normal design range. When this occurs,
please contact Eaton for recommendations.
3. Minimum operating pressure is 20 PSI for standard
units. Consult Eaton for equipment options when
the system pressUre is less than 20 PSI.
4. Suspended solids should not exceed 200 PPM
or 0.02% of volume. For heavier loadings
consult Eaton.

Solvent Based Epoxy

9/2/97

Standard No.: ES-305

Sheet 2 of5:

1.0

SCOPE
This specification outlines the procedures required for the application of the "standard" Hayward
paint for the external coating on strainers made of steel. This specification shall be used only when
a solvent based epoxy coating is required.
This paint is designed to be used directly on rusted steel with a minimum of sUiface preparation. The
paint is a self-priming type with certain color finishes available lead-free.

2.0

SERVICE
This specification shall be used when a requirement exists for external coating of steel suifaces. It
may be applied to "damp" steel but drying time must be adiusted to allow moisture to evaporate.

3.0

CUSTOMER SPECIFICATION
This specification may be modified by including any additional customer requirements so long as such
additions improve the coating quality. ACCEPTABLE MODIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
- Better Surface preparation.
Two coats to achieve greater paint film thickness.
- May be "top-coated" with compatible, high performance epoxies or polyurethane coatings.

4.0

COMPONENTS NOTPAINTED ...

These items shall not be coated:
-Any stainless steel part.
-Any non-metallic part.
-Unit nameplates.
-Exposed screw threads.

Standard No.: ES-305

Sheet 3 of5:

5.0

SURFACE PREPARATION
5.1
Remove all oil and grease from the surface to be coated. The procedures and methods for
SOLVENT CLEANING as outlined in standard SSPC-SPJ-82 (Steel Structures Painting
Council) shall be used. Note that using a "solvent bath" or "spraying" is preferred to using
rags or brush "wetted" with solvent.
5.2

Mask~off all surfaces

excludedfrom painting. See paragraph 4.0.

5.3
Remove ALL scale, loose rust and other particle contaminants following the procedures
outlined in standard SSPC-SP6.
Cleaned and prepared surfaces shall be painted within 24 hours.

5.4

6.0

PAINT APPLICATION
6.1
For general application techniques and precautions, refer to standard SSPC-PAI-82 (Steel
Structures Painting Council) for information.
6.2
The method of application shall be by spray gun with the "airless" method preferred over the
"air atomized" spray system. Brush painting shall be used for "touch-up" and small areas
inaccessible to spray.

6.3
Apply only when air and surface temperatures are between 50 "F to 105 "F. Note that metal
sUrface temperature must be at least 5 "F above the dew point.
6.4
Thinning is not required under normal circumstances. However, when required, thinning with
the proper solvent (#2 thinner) is acceptable up to 10% of total volume.
