Should teenager work contribute towards household expenses?

Deciding If Teens Should Work
Encouraging teenage family members to find jobs is one way a family can increase its income
during tough financial times. Many part-time jobs are available that fit into student schedules.
Pay is usually minimum wage, but can make a significant contribution to the family income and
help defray some expenses. Parents and teenagers need to discuss and determine the number
of hours that can be worked, how the money will be used, transportation and other issues.

Getting Started

There are ways teens can find work that encourages greater responsibility and all the
other qualities parents hoped an after-school job would instill. But finding that kind of
work, and steering kids away from work that may be a detriment, requires taking a hard
look at the teen workplace. It also requires parents to understand the nature of the work
their children do. Here's how to get started.
The Benefits

A teenager's job can teach work skills that will serve him well in college and prepare him for
careers in adulthood.

He can acquire confidence, develop a sense of responsibility and feel more independent.

Studies find that students who work a moderate amountno more than 10 to 15 hours a
week during the school yeartend to earn higher grades than those who don't work at all.

Earning money will enable him to buy things he wants and will provide an opportunity for
learning responsible money management.

If you and your spouse work outside the home, an after-school job can give him adult
supervision in those crucial afternoon hours.

The right jobor jobsmay expose him to new work possibilities and set him on the path to a
lifetime career.

The Drawbacks

Working more than 13 to 20 hours a week is associated with lower grades.

Teens who work too many hours find it difficult to keep up extracurricular activities and social
relationships.

Some studies have found that teens who work long hours are more likely to engage in such
risky activities as using illegal drugs or alcoholin part because they are exposed to older
coworkers who lead them astray.

Conclution
Teenagers should be allowed to work. They have the right to decide whether they work
or not. Some people say that their first priority should be school, but I think it's not
necessary to say that. Their priority should be what is most important for them. It can
be sports, music, art, or of course, work. School is just one of their choices. However,
if a student decides to work, he or she has to be responsible on the job. Even if the
work is very hard, he or she must not work with neglect. People who neglect their
work should not have a job.
My opinion is a general one, so I do not intend to deny that some parents or schools
do not allow students to work. Students should follow their rules, but if they really
want to work and if they are allowed do that, they should work. It's their right.
