PCM - what is it all about?

Process Communication Model - or PCM in short - is a model that has been

developed by Dr Taibi Kahler in the 1970s. It has been applied by NASA in
the selection of astronauts and is now in virtually all industries and social
environments imaginable.
PCM has been verified against other similar methodologies and underpinned
by research and validation for over 30 years. The key to PCM is that the
unique communication training provides all the skills required to decode
behaviour and reduce miscommunication it is a practical methodology.
The model is simple and easy to use, and is based on the understanding that
everyones preferred way of communicating is predictable and based on their
personality.
We can change our learned behaviours, however each individuals
fundamental personality traits are laid down very early in life and do not
change. We can become lawyers or farmers, scientists or train drivers, and
we can learn all the skills needed to be excellent in our jobs. However, the
fundamental personality traits are still present throughout our lives.
Those fundamental personality traits represent themselves in a very specific
way when we are under pressure, and it is predictable, sequential and
measurable! We abandon our learned behaviour and resort to the
fundamental core - our personality. Thats what makes behaviour under
stress so predictable when we understand a persons underlying personality.
And that is where PCM is different. PCM training provides you the skills to
decode and understand yourself and others through observing words, tones,
gestures, facial expressions and posture, and provide practical methods to
manage distress and the resulting miscommunication, and contain conflict.

Why
is
different?

PCM

so

PCM allows you to assess peoples personalities. This gives you the cues
how to communicate with them. It provides simple methods to identify the
different behavioural patterns people show whether they are under pressure
or under severe distress.
You can learn about PCM in a seminar and use it instantly. You take away
with you a workable toolbox. Although it may take a while to understand and
master all aspects of PCM and to be confident in using your newfound
decoding and communication skills, it is no different from any other new skill
you acquire: exercising new skills helps to master them.

PCM - where it all began

Working in a psychiatric clinic in the United States in the late 1960s and
early
1
e970s, Dr Taibi Kahler made a number of discoveries in the clinical
mnvironment that led to the development of a therapy model that was used in
anaging patients in a novel way.
B
a ased on behavioural psychology concepts and grounded in transactional
nalysis, the Process Therapy Model as it is now known was widely accepted
and used in treating patients in psychiatric institutions.

NASA and PCM

In 1978, at a meeting with Dr Terry McGuire, then NASAs Lead Psychiatrist
for manned spaceflight, the next step almost followed as a matter of course:
can the model also be applied in other, non-clinical environments? A cooperation between Dr McGuire, NASA, and Dr Kahler led to the development
of PCM, the Process Communication Model, as it is still known today.
Between 1978 and 1996, as long as Dr McGuire worked with NASA, PCM
principals were used in the selection of astronauts, attempting to minimise
the risk
that
conflicting
personality
traits would
lead
to
avoidable miscommunication and conflict during missions.
During that time, Dr Kahler worked with Dr McGuire to incorporate the model
into the astronaut selection, evaluation, training and management processes.

Personal
Inventory

Pattern

At the same time, Dr Kahler also created the Personality Pattern Inventory, a
statistically validated questionnaire based assessment tool that identifies an
individuals exact personality structure. An enhanced version of the
Personality Pattern Inventory is still used today.
PCM has since been applied in other areas, initially in high risk areas such as
medicine, aviation or transportation, where the interface between technology
and the human being can easily lead to miscommunication and distress.
PCM is now a well-established, scientifically validated and verified tool that is
used on most continents and in a variety of management environments. The
PCM training material has been translated into a multitude of different
applications, ranging from generic training in PCM as a 3-day introductory
course, to courses specifically designed for professions including sales,
medicine, law, the educational sector and counselling.
The key benefits of PCM can be applied almost anywhere: improve
communication with others, manage stress in yourself and those around you,
and overcome conflict.

Are you communicating or just talking?

Whether at home with family, or at
work, whether you work in a small
company or a large corporation, your
success is reliant on effective
communication.
Do you find yourself in situations where it is difficult to understand
where the other person is coming from? And despite your best
efforts, you can't get your point across? It's almost like you are
speaking a different language. And in a way, you are. You just
can't tune into the right channel to effectively get your point
across.

We offer a toolbox called the Process Communication Model

(PCM) that will equip you to understand your own behaviour and
that of those around you.
Communication is particularly difficult when you or someone else
is under pressure. With PCM you can understand your reactions
under stress and how to fix it! You can also recognise stress in
others and assist them in managing their stress.
You can assess people's needs quite quickly based on what
people say, how they say it, how they act and react in situations,
but also using visual and other cues. Satisfying those needs is the
key to communication. You know which "language" you have to
use to be heard and understood. And you learn what you need to
do in order to help yourself - and others - to get out of stressful
situations.
In our training course you are given your own personalised course
material that includes an outline of your personality profile.
We are licensed to deliver PCM training throughout Europe and
the United States. We schedule regular public courses for
individuals, or can tailor in-house training to suit your
companys needs.

Human Error: whether it is

stress or
organisational culturelets
fix it!
Process Communication Model (PCM) is a method that allows you to
manage the risk of Human Error. It enables you to detect early signs of
miscommunication and aberrant behaviour, and to connect or re-connect
with individuals you are finding difficult to manage.

When workplace
mishaps are
analysed,
communication
problems or
behaviour under
stress are often
identified as the root
cause or at least a
contributing factor.
This indicates that
miscommunication is
a major risk.

Ask yourself how effective your current safety training really is. What
about non-compliance with safety procedures, such as not wearing
personal protective equipment or deviating from procedures to take a
shortcut? Can you consistently maintain the outputs required and build a
rapport with your workforce? How do you to instil an appropriate health
and safety culture within your organisation?

With PCM you and your personnel will learn

PCM is supported
by a strong
scientific
background and has
been used for over
30 years

Achieve listening skills at a mastery level

Develop effective communication practices as a leader and team
member
Get to the bottom of why human errors keep occurring
Decode and understand other peoples behaviour
Predict and identify the onset of behavioural failure patterns
Intervene constructively through appropriate communication
Detect and correct miscommunication before it contributes to the
incident or accident
Respond quickly to situations and defuse stress and amplify
safety messages
Influence the people in your workforce away from potential harm
and back into safe working practices

We regularly receive feedback, such as PCM has resulted in

noticeable behavioural changes and increased management
capabilities in the areas of interpersonal skills, specifically in the busy
and sometimes stressful environment that our maintenance staff
operate in.

Where to Start?
To get a better understanding how to best manage the communication
channels of those around us and in our teams or crews, we need to focus
first on ourselves. We need to become aware that even when trained and
practised in technical skills, we also need to have a clear understanding
of how to manage our own mindset.
PCM training is available through public seminars, or through in-house
training tailored to your organisation.

Reducing error in high risk industries with PCM

Working in high risk industries such as power transmission, civil
engineering, oil and gas, and mining is tough. The work is
personally demanding, and the environment is often difficult and
remote. Good teamwork is the key to success.
Building good teams and then assigning them to work can be a test
for everyone. Stress identification and a persons ability to work
while in stressful situations is often the difference between
completing the job on time or not, or between safe operations and
disaster.

People are just

as important as
plant, machinery
or technology.
They are the
human glue
which holds the
company
together and
drives it forward
towards its goals
and targets.

That is where the Process Communication Model (PCM) can help.

By understanding personalities and behaviours, managers can
quickly build good teams, secure in the knowledge that once in the
field they will do the job. By understanding the personalities and
the behaviours, managers can also predict how people will cope
under pressure and stress.
PCM will give you the skills to understand personalities, observe
behaviours and recognise the early warning signs of stress.
It is an effective management toolbox which brings improved
efficiency to your operation and greater productivity from your team

A New Mindset and Communication

Training Program for the Medical Industry
How much does miscommunication cost?
Errors in medical practice can cost millions. At the extreme, errors cost human lives.
However, miscommunication also costs the industry on a daily basis. For example:
Miscommunication between patient and medical staff can result in misdiagnosis
and delays or errors in treatment.
Miscommunication can lead to incorrect medications administered and
inappropriate tests ordered resulting in longer treatment and recovery times
requiring longer hospital stays
Miscommunication between medical team members can result in incorrect
procedures and adverse outcomes
Higher hospital costs due to delays and remediating errors, and higher insurance
premiums as a result of errors and malpractice claims

What is the Process Communication Model (PCM)?

PCM is a validated communication model underpinned by research. PCM

Is language-based: it analyses HOW something is being said, not what (the

focus is on process instead of content)
Makes behaviour predictable and measurable
Describes six different types of behaviours, perceptions and communication
channels people use
Provides the skills to decode the language, observe behaviours and individualise
your response to win motivation and cooperation
Provides insight to behaviours under stress, recognising distress in self and
others, and managing distress.

PCM allows doctors, nurses, managers and staff to take advantage of the differences
between personalities, to understand different ways of doing things, to deal with
situations and use the right techniques to communicate and motivate others. PCM
enables you to decode behaviour, to understand underlying psychological structures,
to identify the onset of dysfunctional behaviour and allows for constructive, supportive
intervention inside and outside the operating theatre.

Advanced CRM: A New Mindset and Communication

Training Program for the Aviation Industry
How much does miscommunication cost?
Aviation accidents cost millions. However, miscommunication also costs the industry
on a daily basis. For example:
Inadvertent non-compliance can cost thousands of dollars in fines.
Inappropriate decisions can lead to delays, inefficient profiles and higher fuel
burns, or even diversions and flight cancellations
Lack of understanding between instructors/checkers and students/examinees can
lead to expensive additional training
Lack of listening and decoding skills can lead to the selection of the wrong people
for the job, resulting in increased recruitment and training costs and higher staff
turnover.

The 3-Day PCM Advanced Seminar

The Advanced Course
focuses on what is
behind the failure
mechanisms when we or
others get stressed,
making it easier to apply
PCM in a variety of
situations.

Learn more about communicating and managing stress

Building on the skills learned during the PCM Introductory Course, the
Advanced Course allows you to practice the skills you have acquired earlier:
understanding your own reactions under stress, recognising stress in others,
understanding your own behaviour and making communication happen.
Too often we are preoccupied with concentrating on what is said, formulating
our own reply and focussing solely on the contents of the con versation.
To make communication happen, your focus has to be also on the
communication channels others are using and to recognise when they are
under stress.

Using PCM in your everyday environment is a function of being able

to listen not only to what has been said, but at the same time, to
how it has been said.
This seminar will allow
you to go the next step in
applying PCM as a tool
in your business and
personal environments.

Specifically you will learn about:

o
o
o

The phase issues that individual personality types face and what drives
many of our behaviours when we are under stress;
Transference, and the role it plays in our behaviour and how it creates
miscommunication;
How personality types, their psychological needs, communication
channels, perceptions and stress patterns are closely related and are
highly predictable;
How those stress patterns are linked to particular scripts, i.e. how
people write and talk.

How to analyse letters and emails and understand the personality type of
the author and whether they are under stress, and know how best to
respond.
o How failed communication leads to distress and poor
performance.
o How language, tones, gestures and other indicators help us to assess a
situation and what we can do to motivate others and communicate
effectively.
o

This is what one

participant had to say:
The predictive nature
of PCM is invaluable in
my current role as a
Facilitator, managing
groups that are often
attempting to resolve
conflict. The ability to
recognize the warning
signs that indicate
miscommunication is
occurring, and being
able to tailor my
message to invite
someone out of that
space, is an enormously
powerful tool for
successfully managing
group dynamics.
