THICKNESS MEASUREMENTS

DETECTION AND ANALYSIS EXCEL FILE

Purpose
Object of the program is to permit a faster and surer detection of the thickness data
measurement, by means of the calculus for the difference between the detected values
and the limit ones, and the possibility to effectuate in automatic way operations for
the identification of Suspects and Over Limit values.
Three different file are inserted, UTMBUL.xls used for Bulk Carriers, UTMTAN for
Chemical and Oil Tankers, UTMOTH addressed to other ships typologies. In the
following document, the UTMXXX word shall be used, in order to indicate the
operations that could be independently effectuated by typology.
Program structure
Each file is subdivided in sheets, named UTMXXX1-2-, for the thickness
measurements data detection relevant to the different ships structures.
Two sheets, Longitudinal Strength Bottom and Longitudinal Strength Deck, are
utilized in order to detect the longitudinal strength of bottoms and decks. In such
sheets, the total mean thickness reductions, which overpass the 10 per cent, are put in
evidence, by means of the F.N. (Fuori Norma) abbreviation. In case it is reduced more
than the a.m. 10 per cent a class confirmation is subjected to RINA Head Office
approval of the residual longitudinal strength calculation and send the three transverse
belts for the calculus.
For each UTMXXX1-2- sheet, two summarizing sheets are finally inserted,
respectively named Renewal_XXX and Suspect_XXX, in which, by means of the
Analyse button in the Rina Men, the Over Limit and Suspects values are
summarized.

The operations, which can be executed, are the following:

1. To insert data relevant to the ship and different references.
2. To insert thickness measurements.
3. To calculate the difference, in mm and per cent value, between the detected and
the admitted values.
4. To insert new detection schedules.
5. To analyse the Over Limit and Suspect condition with creation, for each sheet, of
two summarizing reports, each one relevant to one of the two cases.
6. To print single sheets, of all the sheets, of sheets with the area to be renewed and
suspect areas, of all the summarizing sheets, of the entire file.
7. To create a file, protected by password.
Some of the described functions, in particular the difference between admitted values
and actual ones, are automatically controlled and do not need actions by users.
The following procedures:
1. Creation of a new schedule.
2. Data analysis .
3. Print.
4. Creation of a protected file
can be turned on by means of the fitting labels, inserted in the Men, named
RINA-XXX.

Sheet use
In the sheets, the blue color identifies the cells in which is possible to insert data. The
white cells cannot be modified.
The movement among cells to fill in, can be done in the following way:
1.

Using the TAB. button: in this way the movement shall be automatic
only in the cells which can be filled in (blue ones). Pushing TAB.
button, it is possible to move on, the TAB. and SHIFT combination
allow to come back.

2.

Using the mouse: clicking on the cell to fill in.

3.

Using the direction arrows: in this case the movement is by cell per cell
and though also in the cells which cannot be modified.

TAB use is advised

Button in the RINA-XXX Men can be turned on in the following ways:
1. Selecting the ALT and underlined letter combination.
2. Selecting with the mouse the desired line.

Warning
Pay attention using UTMBUL and UTMOTH files:
UTMBUL in UTMBUL_7 sheet and UTMOTH in UTMOTH_5,_6,
_7,_8 sheets always need to have manually inserted the admissible
percentage corrosion limits, 20 or 25.
UTMTAN file always uses a 20 per cent corrosion limit.
It has to be decided zone by zone, consulting RINA Rules tables. Such percent value
shall be filled by hand in the last column (see fig. 9). For further information, see
RINA Rules Section A, chapter 2, appendix 2, table 5, 6, 7.

APPENDIX A
Limit value for Analyze method ( X value represents the limit for buckling
analysis):

Since corrosion limit for buckling is above 20%, that percentage represents the reference limit

Since corrosion limit for buckling is between 20% and 15%, the X value represents the
new limit for renewal in way of deck and bottom zone and the suspect area is reduced in
percentage.

Since X value is under 15%, the limit value and suspect areas are reduced, according to
buckling analysis (for deck and bottom zone).

APPENDIX B
PROBLEM SOLUTIONS

1) Software failure:
a) have you answered ACTIVE MACROS/ATTIVA MACRO on the first
window opening the file?
b) verify the correct activation of macros.
c) no results about analysis: have you completely filled in the description
column (each row)?
d) buckling analysis does not properly work:
d1)

is cover sheet completely filled in?

d2)

is original thickness of the structures more than the buckling

required thickness?

d3)

have you verified in the cover sheet the ON message in way of

buckling analysis cell?

2) Failure during protection operation:

a) have you filled in the RI number in cover sheet?
3) No decimal number are displayed:
a) this problem could be caused due to screen resolution, try to increase
zoom percentage. Before filling in input data on sheets, check the
last column on the right side, in order to verify cells to fill in, by
means of horizontal scroll bar.
4) The last sheet represents all the marks which have to be used in order to
describe each listed element and can be increased and updated by the
surveyor himself.
