ROTARY CLUB OF BEAUMARIS WEEKLY BULLETIN

Next Meetings

Presidents Report
Not many more events until we finish up for the
year! The last week was a bit more relaxed with
our trip to Yarra Yarra where club members and
partners were educated on true Muslim practices
by Iman Janud. It was a very enlightening talk and
our guest speaker excelled at the question session
which took the bulk of his time. I am always
amazed how a great speaker can not only impart
understanding in a reply, but also answer the specifics that the question puts on the table. Thanks
go to Richard for finding these high calibre speakers.

Four Rotarians will this week represent Beaumaris

at the District Foundation dinner meeting. Foundation is an important funding mechanism, which our
club utilises for both local and international grants
each year.
We have 58 members and partners signed up for
our Christmas dinner at Beaumaris Motor Yacht
Squadron on Thursday 18th. I hope those attending are having fun finding those unique $10 Kris
Kringle gifts at a local OP shop. It is surprising
what one can discover in an OP Shop, and our
faithful Santa will make the long trip from the North
Pole in Black Rock to deliver them on the night.
Next week I have to make a trip to our centre of
politics Canberra, so Trish will take the reins, with
Nick Farr, Director of Everest Academy, speaking
to us and Mike will in the chair.

Vale - Past President Phillip Kaufman

A group of our Beaumaris Rotarians were
among the many friends who farewelled Phil on
Thursday Nov 27 at the Sandringham Yacht
Club.
Phil's health had faded following heart problems some years back. He was stoic to the
end and passed away in the company of Marilyn, his daughters and brothers. Phil was forever kind-hearted and this was especially obvious
in the love he had for his family.
Following the chartering of our Beaumaris Rotary Club, Phil was in the first group of new
members to join. He contributed many ideas in
our committees and led the club as President.
Some of our members have known Phil and his
brothers since their teenage days. He lived the
greater part of his married life in Beaumaris,
and was active and served in many local clubs.
His love of sailing and boating involved Sandringham (of which he was a member for 60
years), Metung and Mordialloc Yacht and Boat
Clubs. He was also a committee member at
the RSL.
He had an extensive network of local watering
holes and a regular timetable for his visits.
He went through some tough times, and those
who knew him well, stuck by him. Phil had a
special wisdom and always a keen observer of
what was going on.
We have many fond memories of Phil. Our
heartfelt thoughts go out to Marilyn and family

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Communitys headquarters are in the United Kingdom and, according to the website, it has built more than
15,000 mosques, more than 500 schools, and
more than 30 hospitals and translated the
Quran into more than 70 languages.
Imam Janud provided an overview presentation
of the main features of the Islamic faith before
participating in an extended Q&A session. His
talk proved to be an enriching and enlightening
experience for those fortunate enough to be
present.

Presentation; What is Islam?

Founded by prophet Muhammad 1400 year
ago
Islam, in Arabic language, means peace and
obedience

The seven-years course at the Ahmadiyya Institute of Islamic Studies, in Maple, Canada,
was followed by six months as an imam of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Liberia.

Holy Book of Islam is Quran

Mr Janud sees his main role at the Ahmadiyya

Centre Melbourne in Langwarrin (formally
known as Bait-ul-Islam or House of Peace) as
being to lead prayers and train members in religious matters but I would also work for interfaith harmony and to build bridges between
communities.

Study of Islam can be divided into two categories:

Five Articles of Faith

Iman Januds Answers to a number of the key

questions are as follows;
There is no basis in the Quran which justifies or underpins the activities of 21st
Century terrorist organisations such as
ISIS or the Taliban. Their views stem
from a cultural basis and use a distorted
version of Islam to justify their behaviours.

Similarly the Quran does not promote a
view about the inferiority of women but
regards the education of women as a matter of the highest regard.

While the Western media has been focussing on the unfortunate deaths of a number of western hostages it has not shown
nearly the same attention on the more
than 19,000 Muslims killed by ISIS.

He believes that there is no hope for negotiation with the extreme terrorist organisations whom he exist in a barbaric state
of darkness.

Muslims believe that anyone who lives a
righteous life is entitled to enter heaven
regardless of their religion.

He spoke of the differences between Sunni and Shia Muslim sects but space does
not permit a full answer to this question.
