The need for speed

THE Glenmaggie and District

Boat Club is hosting another
action packed Glenmaggie Gold
Cup Powerboat Race Meeting at
the end of December.
The Glenmaggie & District Boat
Club was established in 1955 on the
foreshore of the Lake Glenmaggie
Dam, adjacent to the Glenmaggie
Bridge when the surrounds were
still wilderness.
The removal of tree stumps from
the proposed racing area was the first
task for the club initially. Original
members recount stories of rowing

out remaining trees on the course,

strapping dynamite to the trunk, and
on lighting the fuse rowing spiritedly
back to the safety of the shore!
In following years boat ramps
were cut and a club hut was erected
which is still standing today
In the early days, boat racing on
the Lake was one of the few forms
of entertainment and brought large
numbers of the rural community

together. Skiffs and Runabouts

featured on the race program which
took on a country picnic atmosphere.
Today the club is a vibrant mix of
drivers and families, still dedicated
toward bringing world class Power
Boat Racing to the local region.
The race meetings are a great
day out and a still top spot to take a
picnic during the festive season.

Recent rains flushing fish out...

ROSS our Fish Whisperer from Riviera Bait
Supplies in Lakes Entrance reports that the
rains are bringing the fish out in their droves in
the lead up to the Christmas break. As the influx
of water flushes the river systems and pushes the
fish under jetties and onto the banks in superb
fashion, anglers will be rewarded.
The Town jetty and Post Office jetty are
producing some fantastic Trevally catches.
Bullock Island is great for Trevally and Spotted
Salmon
The sand crabs are plentiful.
Nanguna is going off for Whiting and Trevally.
Paynesville to Loch Sport is producing excellent
quantities of Trevally and Spotted Salmon. In fact
whole estuary is doing very well.

Lakes Entrance: Kalimna Jetty is producing
Salmon and Tailor on metal lures. King George
Whiting are active around the town jetties, with
Trevally off the footbridge. A few Flathead and
Gurnard have been landed in the channels.

Lake Tyers: Flathead and Bream are still

prevalent around the channel markers and
Nowa Nowa Arm. Soft plastics and prawn are
accounting for most fish. The odd Tailor has
also been taken.
Mitchell River: Plenty of Estuary Perch to
40cm are biting around the highway bridge, on

diving hard bodied lures. Bream are downstream

from the Butter Factory. Vibes and bait are
catching fish.
Tambo River: Bream have been caught from
Reynolds Road to the mouth, using sandworm
and peeled prawn.
Nicholson: Bream are cruising between the
highway bridge and swimming hole. Sandworm
and shrimp are best bait.
Metung: The boardwalk is still fishing well,
with Bream, Trevally and King George Whiting
taking sandworm, prawn and whitebait.
Paynesville: Plenty of school prawn are about.
Bream are in the Strait, with Tailor striking trolled
metal lures, in Campbell Channel.
Hollands Landing: Bream and Flathead
have been landed around Bull Bay, on shrimp,
sandworm and soft plastics.
Marlo: Estuary Perch are still feeding on live
prawn, off the fishing platforms and around snags.
Flathead and Bream have been caught in the
Snowy River, up to the highway bridge.
Tamboon Inlet: Fishermans Landing has
Tailor and Bream on the go using solid bodied
lures and live prawn.

Our Anniversary at the
Bairnsdale International

We arrived just after 2pm and settled in to the

most delightful spa/king size room. The bathroom
was lovely with a corner spa bath ready for a
relaxing soak.
The main room was well appointed with a
beautiful king size bed, large TV with Foxtel
service and gourmet coffee making facilities.
We had a very relaxing afternoon and
eagerly awaited our evening meal. At
6.30 we ventured downstairs to the
dining room which was tastefully
decorated and so clean and well
presented.
My wife settled on French onion
soup followed by the seafood steak
and I chose the salt and pepper squid
and rack of lamb.
The entres arrived in no time and were
beautiful. After a short break the mains arrived and
we savored the tender steak and well presented
rack of lamb.
After seeing the desert menu we just had to
squeeze in a soft centred chocolate cake and a
sticky date pudding, which we were told was an
award winning desert. It certainly was delicious!
The following morning we woke after a
wonderful nights sleep in the quiet air-conditioned
room and trotted off to breakfast whereupon we
were treated to a superb rendition of eggs Benedict.
Thank you to Madlen and staff, our stay was terrific
and we celebrated our anniversary in great style!

Car Games teach Kids literacy...

TRAVELLING with kids provides
some great opportunities to learn.
Car travel is a great chance to develop
your childs reading ability in a fun
and informal way. Here are some car
games the whole family came play.
Environment Language
Holidaying with children usually
exposes your child to new environments.
Gippsland is a diverse area you will
find oceans, lakes, forests, farm land
and National Parks. Introduce children
to new words or environments when
travelling, this may be single words
such as dolphins, seals, pelicans (Lakes
Entrance) to more complex information,
how caves were formed (Buchan).
Eye Spy
To learn to read children need to
recognise the letter and connect it with
the sound it makes. Playing Eye Spy

can help reinforce this connection. Say,

I spy with my little eye something
beginning with the letter m and that
makes the sound /m/. This helps
younger children connect objects they
see with the beginning sound they make.
Signs
Your child may be learning to
recognise the alphabet, sounding out
words, learning sight words, or an
independent reader. Signs provide a
great opportunity for all children to
read. Often signs provide diagrams as
well as text. While younger children
can interpret the diagram older children
can read the text.
Number Plates
There are many reading games
involving number plates. Older
children can invent silly sentences
using the letters in the Number Plates

such as RAC123 could be running

after cows or raindrops are colourful.
Younger children can play letter spotto,
recognising the letters on the Number
Plates. Turn it into a game by counting
the number of times they see the letters
in their own name.
Books
In many wonderful Op Shops throughout
Gippsland for under $1 children can
buy Picture Books, early Reader chapter
books or Young Adult fiction. With the
limited space in a car it is a great chance
to continually replace books.

of time to create their portrayal of
the theme for 2015 Impressions
of Coastal Life in South Gippsland.
An official Life Aquatic 2015
canvas will be supplied with the $15
entry fee for the Open category and
$5 for Primary students. Canvases
are now available at Stockyard
Gallery (open daily), Swanlee Art
and Craft Leongatha (5662 3091),

Morwell Art and Framing (5134

The skys the limit where creating
is concerned as long as the official

Boxing Day Races

Fri 26th January

Drouin Picnic Racetrack

DROUIN Picnic Racetrack, nestled amongst the

park surrounds of the Mathew Bennett Park and the
Drouin Golf Club, about 500m south of the Freeway
itself, boasts a beautiful sweeping entrance to the home
straight. The final stretch of the course is slightly uphill,
and is notorious for close finishes and exciting racing.
The turf racing surface is one of the best in the district.

The Club is run by enthusiastic volunteers who form the

backbone of working bees that keep this local institution
going. The Club also ploughs thousands of dollars of race
day proceeds back into local charities.
Its a great way to wind down from the hectic pace of
Christmas day and heaps of fun as well!

Drouins main race meeting features the Drouin Cup on

Boxing Day. The Cup is usually the richest of the Picnic circuit
and has been running for over 30 years. Locals and visitors
alike descend on the lawns to picnic on Christmas leftovers,
pop some Champagne, check out the fashions on the field and
place a bet. Last years event attracted around 1800 people.

Drouins Boxing Day racing is a great way to wind down after

Christmas Day festivities.

THE Victorian Trade Union Choir is performing in a

FREE event, funded by the Bush and Mine Fire Recovery
Program and supported by the Gippsland Trade &
Labour Council and La Mama, early December.

Its an inspiring, funny and moving music theatre show

featuring songs and stories of solidarity that people really
connect with. It was created, produced and performed by
the Victorian Trade Union Choir in collaboration with
award winning playwright Rebecca Lister and musical
director Michael Roper. The show has played to sold out
seasons at Trades Hall in 2012, at La Mama in 2013 and
Geelong in November.

Featured in the show is a story from local activist Vicki

Hamilton OAM, of the Asbestos Council of Victoria,
about her once strong and vital dad who died 14 years
after being diagnosed with asbestosis. The story is linked
to This Darkened Room, a song written by choir member
Mary Caruana for the musical Dust, about Lisa Moran,
whose treatment for mesothelioma required her to stay out
of the sunlight.
This even promises to a most uplifting one!

The main arena buzzes with various horse events such as

Show Jumping, Galloway Pony & Hack riding, a Fun Ring
for the kids, Miniature Ponies, Shetland Ponies, Harness,
Pintos,Pony Club, Clydesdales and Stock Horses. The "Cattle
Spectacular" is a great success every year with many entries
from near & far. There are also Poultry, an Animal Nursery
and a Wonderful Dog Show, one of the largest outside the
Royal Melbourne Show. In the main pavilion there is the
"Lang Lang Young Personality Competition" which is free to
enter and attracts local and non local children under 16. Also
in the main pavilion is the vegetable stall with all proceeds
going to the Kooweerup Hospital and all the produce
donated by local market gardeners. The main activity in the
main pavilion is, of course, the Art, Craft, Cooking, Produce,
Flowers, Photography etc which is on display and is judged,
with prizes going to the most successful entries. Take a
wander around the Showgrounds and you will find food
stalls, amusements and showbags as well as all the activity
of the animals and their owners.

Light lunches and delicious cakes are available everyday and our
Gourmet Ice creams and icy frappes will be a welcome refreshment

and property investment rising
in popularity, you might think
that investing in a holiday rental
property right now, is a great way
to kill two birds with one stone. But
is it? Making a holiday property a
profitable investment takes some
careful consideration and planning.
In this article, we give you a guide to

Weve all dreamed of a little holiday
place where we could get away for a
break with family and friends. And
why not combine it with a property
investment to make some money?
The problem is, it is very difficult to
find one property that can serve both
purposes particularly as a holiday
rental earns its biggest income during
the periods where you and your friends
may want to use it most.
Remember to think with your

If youre looking to buy a property for

rental income and capital gain. The
rental income needs to be enough to
cover your loan and maintenance costs,

over time. If your favourite holiday

destination is also popular with
everyone else, it might be difficult to
find a property that has the capital gain
potential in that location.

and look for locations with real future
growth potential. These are usually
locations with great activities for
families swimming, bush walking,

What happens during the
off season?
One important thing to remember is that
a holiday rental investment is unlikely
to provide consistent rental returns all
year round. For example, if the property
is near a beach, it may go untenanted
during most of the winter. If its near a
ski field, just the opposite is true.

To be sure your investment property

will be profitable, you need to calculate
how much it will earn during the peak
seasons to see if it will cover your
costs when it is unoccupied. Before
you make your purchase, talk to local
real estate agents about how much the
property is likely to earn over the year
to see if it will be financially viable.

holiday yourself, think about using it
during the off season so that you dont

A Week by Week Guide on

Although we havent had many warm days yet you should

be seeing some results in the garden. Tomatoes will be
making good growth and you may be fortunate to have
small tomatoes on some of your plants. Continue sowing
beans and lettuce every ten days or so and be sure to plant
seeds of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli now for late
January/February transplanting.

Planning ahead will help ensure a continuous supply of vegetables throughout

the year. Even though we have had some good rainfalls in many areas it is wise
to pay attention to soil moisture levels as setbacks will slow your plants down and
in some cases will make them go to seed early.

MONTHLY JOBS

Fast maturing vegetables like zucchinis could still be planted. They would be
starting to yield when earlier plants were starting to get a bit overgrown and
tired. Celery is a bit more of a challenge to grow because it must never run
short of water. If it does the stalks will be tough and stringy. Give it a go if you
like a challenge and only harvest the stalks as you need them. Tomatoes also
need consistent watering. If the soil varies from wet to dry you may end up with
blossom end rot. This is caused by ineffective calcium uptake by the plant
from the soil and is characterized by a black patch on the base of the tomato.
The easiest remedy to keeping the soil moist is mulch.

1st WEEK

Make final sowings of climbing beans.

Baled sugar cane mulch, straw, etc. is readily available from garden centres,
produce stores, hardware stores, etc. There are also many sources of mulch
around us. Grass clippings, leaves, cardboard, old cotton clothes, towels, jeans
and hessian sacks all make effective mulch. Sounds a bit bizarre but these are
all natural materials which will ultimately rot and become food for the soil. Cut
the jeans through at the crotch and any other material into strips and lay it down
each side of the rows or just cut into pieces and cover any bare soil. If you feel
the old clothes are unsightly just cover them with a layer of grass clippings.

Howdy Folks!
Ho-Ho-Ho! It surely has come around quickly this year, hasnt it?!
This mornings radio talk back was very fruity indeed, so we thought wed mention just a few
fruits that are a little bit out of the norm:
Amelanchier Service June Berry: this delightful hardy tall shrub or small tree has clusters
of white flowers in spring, followed by very tasty purple berries. The autumn foliage is brilliant.
Pepinos Solanum Muricatum: related to tomatoes, this football shaped yellow fruit has
purple stripes and a melon-like flavour. It grows to about 1 metre & is an attractive plant with
its purple flowers. Pepinos look terrific climbing up a low trellis. Eat it as a dessert, for breakfast,
or as a snack. Remember to protect it from frost.
Myrtus Ugni - Chilean Guava: this upright shrub has small dark green fragrant leaves. During
spring, these tough shrubs are smothered in delicate white flowers followed by tasty purplish
berries that make a delicious jam. Easily grown, it also makes a stunning hedge or topiary.
Feijoa Sellowana Pineapple Guava: the egg-shaped green fruit is ripe in autumn. It does
have a faint pineapple tang, but I think the flavour is unique. The edible flowers, held on new
seasons growth are white underneath with brilliant red stamens. It may be trained as a tree or
hedge.
Fuchsia: we all know this beautiful shrub, but did you know the berries are edible and yummy?
Actinidia Arguta Issai Kiwi Berry: Yum Yum! Its sweeter than a regular Kiwi Fruit and you
dont even have to peel it. The greenish white flowers are fragrant & they usually bear in their
second year. Suitable for a pot or ground, they do need a trellis to climb.
Now, put your thinking cap on & find a spot for one of these interesting & rewarding dual
purpose plants. Maybe you could gift one to a friend.
