Mrs.

Tolsons Homework Policy

Why I assign homework:
I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students
make the most of their experience in school. I give homework because it is useful in
reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons,
teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits.
When homework will be assigned:
Homework will be assigned Monday through Friday. Assignments should never
take students more than one hour to complete each night, not including studying for
tests and working on projects. Spelling, vocabulary, and language arts assessments
will be given each Friday. All other tests will be communicated through your childs
planner. Students need to read at least 15-20 minutes every night. Students will
write their homework in their planner daily, and it should be signed or initialed by a
parent or guardian Monday-Friday.
Daily reading requirement:
requirement:
Each child should be reading 15-20 minutes each night. The purpose of my this
requirement is to be sure that students are reading the minimum number of words and
books needed to make appropriate reading progress during third gradeas they say,
practice makes perfect! Also, please be aware that it is my expectation that the
books your child reads are at their own ability level. Please complete the reading
calendar daily!
Students homework responsibilities:
I expect students to do their best job on homework. I expect homework to be
neat, not sloppy. I expect students to do the work on their own and ask for help only

after they have given it their best effort. I expect that all assignments will be turned
in on time.
Teachers homework responsibilities:
I will check all homework for completion. Because I strongly believe in the value
supportive feedback plays in motivating children to develop good study habits, I will
recognize students when they do their homework and offer incentives.
Parents homework responsibilities:
Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their
children. Therefore, I ask that parents make homework a top priority, provide
necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time,
provide praise and support, not let children avoid doing homework, and contact me if
they notice a problem. Also, please be sure to sign/initial the agenda nightly.
If students do not complete homework:
Students receive a grade for their homework, so not completing assignments
will penalize their grade. If students choose not to do their homework, they will spend
their free time or class time completing assignments. If students consistently
choose not to do their homework, this will result in afterschool detention to complete
missing assignments. If homework becomes a major issue, I will request a conference
including both parent/guardian and the student in hopes of resolving the problem.
If there is a legitimate reason why a student is not able to finish homework,
please send a note to me on the day the homework is due stating the reason it was
not completed. The note must be signed by the parent.
Please read and discuss this homework policy with your child. Then sign this
letter and return it to school.

I have read this homework policy and have discussed it with my child. I understand
that it will be my responsibility to pick my child up from afterschool
afterschool detention if
he/she does not complete homework.
