Job Description
The IM Sports Coordinator is
the Director of the IM
Program. As the direct the
Coordinator meets with the IM
Executive Committee (all
students) to discuss, work on,
and resolve various issues and
concerns within the program.
The Coordinator works
closely with the IM
Equipment Manager (and the
individual IM Managers) to
ensure each IM sport has its
necessary equipment.
The IM Sports Administrative
Assistant is the Assistant
Director of the IM Program.
The Administrative Assistant
is responsible for the IM
Budget -- which includes
collecting deposits and fines,
issuing refunds, and paying
the IM Managers -- and
ensuring all eligibility rules
are being followed. To ensure
that the affiliation system is
not taken advantage of and to
assist IM Managers in
determining whether teams are
eligible to compete in
Intramurals, the
Administrative Assistant
collects rosters from ALL
teams for ALL IM Sports.
The IM Sports Equipment
Manager. Working for the IM
Program is just one of the
many duties that the IM
Equipment Manager has. The
IM Equipment Manager has a
much smaller role in the

organization and operation of

the IM Sports Program, but
assists the IM Coordinator in
ordering new equipment for
the IM Program. Also, the
Equipment Manager orders
and maintains the inventory of
championship IM T-shirts.
The Equipment Manager will
also work directly with some
of the IM Managers for sports
that require equipment checkouts for the participants.
The
Intramural
Council
consists of all athletic chairs,
the IM Managers, and the
members of the Executive
Committee. The athletic chairs
are representatives of various
groups on campus such as
Academic
Departments,
Clubs, Organizations, etc.
The MIT IM Executive
Committee is the group of five
that makes the executive
decisions for the Intramural
Council. Comprised of a
chairman, vice chairman, and
3 at-large members, the IM
Executive Committee is the
elected body of officials from
the
IM
Council.
This
committee is responsible for
addressing and handing out
judgment for incidents in MIT
Intramurals, reviewing and
revising the IM Handbook,
and carrying out the various
tasks as identified by the IM
Coordinator in support of the
IM
Program,
the
IM
Managers, and the participants
of the IM program. The
committee chairman will also
task the other members of the
IM Executive Committee with

Managers

duties to sustain and improve

the
organization
and
operations of the IM program.
There
are
no
formal
requirements to hold a spot on
the committee. The best
committee members are those
students that are interested in
having a leadership position
on
campus
and
are
knowledgeable of the IM
program. Experience playing
IM sports or running sports as
an IM Manager is a valuable,
though
not
necessarily
required, prerequisite for
participation on the the MIT
IM Executive Committee.
The IM Managers are the
work-horses of the IM
Program. Simply put, the IM
Managers are responsible for
planning and organizing the
IM sports. To do so, IM
Managers must go through a
training session with the IM
Coordinator and IM Executive
Committee. There is a
required pre-season meeting
for IM Managers to meet
Facilities staff members. To
organize a season, IM
Managers collect all roster
entries, schedule all matches
and
referee
assignments,
organize playoff brackets,
submit fines/penalties, and
complete other administrative
paperwork. It is by far the best
position in the IM Program for
students to gain leadership
experience because of the
amount of communication and
organization that is required to
successfully direct the league's
operations!

III. Rules and Regulation

1. Participant Eligibility
Individual Eligibility
Any male or female student currently enrolled in the school is eligible to participate.
2. Misconduct Point System
The Conduct and Behaviour System has been implemented to minimize the occurrence of
undesirable and unsportsmanlike behaviour by participants, spectators and team captains.
Undesirable behaviours and unsportsmanlike behaviours can occur before and after contest.

Participants, teams and organizations are responsible for their actions during tournaments and
games. All participants, teams and organizations will be sanctioned accordingly.
3. Player/Coach/Spectator Conduct
1. Any person who violates conduct rules (i.e., verbal/physical abuse) outlined for each
sport either before, during or after the game may be disqualified from the game or
subsequent game(s).
2. Any acts of physical abuse in a contest may result in suspension.
3. Striking or physically abusing an official or Rec Sports staff member may also result in
suspension
4. Teams will be responsible for actions of spectators and/or any one else associated with
their team, including actions of harassment, abuse or interference with players, officials,
scorers and supervisors.
Each sport carries additional conduct rules specific to the sport. The team manager captain or
coach is responsible for informing players of specific rules.
4. Dishonesty
Any individual who is found guilty of dishonesty may be disqualified from all intramurals for the
balance of his or her university career or any part thereof. If the individual's team is party to his
or her dishonesty, the team may also be disqualified from participating in intramurals for the rest
of the year or any part thereof. Infractions under this category include playing under an assumed
name, playing on more than one team or misrepresenting a score.
5. Ejections
If any participant is ejected or removed from a contest or tournament for unsportsmanlike
conduct, they are automatically suspended from all further intramural activities until they meet
with the Prefect of Discipline coordinator.
6. Crowd Behaviour Guidelines
Teams are responsible for the conduct of their spectators during Intramural contests. The
following guidelines are provided to the Intramural staff to follow when dealing with unruly
spectators and/or crowds watching any intramural contest. These guidelines will provide an
effective way for the Intramural staff to deal with all intramural spectators.

A. Both game officials and supervisors shall conduct a pre-game conference with each team
captain or representative. The game officials will explain all ground rules such as legal
and illegal equipment and specific game rules for each sport. The site supervisor will also
inform each representative that they are there to assist the game officials and teams when
questions arise. The site supervisor should also remind the team representative of the
team's responsibility for crowd behavior and that the game may be suspended for crowd
control.
B. When the site supervisor realizes that the unruly spectators are becoming a problem, the
supervisor will contact the offenders and ask that they comply with Recreational Sports
and/or University policy.
C. When the site supervisor realizes that one of the following situations has occurred or the
previous request has been ignored, the team captain or representative will be notified to
instruct their spectators to comply with the committee policies for conduct:
1.
Abusive language directed at game officials or opponents and other spectators in
an inappropriate manner at any game site.
2.
Any violations of the Student Handbook (which includes possession of alcoholic
beverages and controlled substances, etc.)
D. In the event that a team's spectators fail to comply with the continued verbal warnings,
the following procedures may be implemented. The team representative(s) must be
responsible for their spectators. The following options may be followed:
1.
Suspension of the game until warning(s) are followed appropriately.
2.
If the above suspension has not brought results, the game is ended and the team
and spectators will be asked to leave the game site. The outcome of the game will
be decided later by the Recreational Sports staff.
7. Forfeits
Games will start at the officially scheduled starting time. A forfeit will be declared if a team or
individual is not eligible or ready to play at the originally scheduled time. Ready to Play means
that a team must be on the playing area with at least the minimum number of men and/or women
to constitute a regulation team. In all sports, GAME TIME is THE FORFEIT TIME, so
managers should be familiar with the rules and plan to arrive AT LEAST 10 minutes prior to the
game time. The Intramural Supervisor's watch is the Official Forfeit Time.
