Insulation of Marine Piping and Equipment

Sea Water Systems

The pipes on main deck shall be insulated against freezing.

Sanitary and Utility Water

Cold water
In order to avoid freezing of the safety shower and eye bath water supply pipe on upper
deck, where water does not circulate continuously through the pipes, electrical heat tracing
shall be used. For water supply, at all times of the safety shower and eye bah on upper deck,
which does not circulating continuously through the pipes and avoid freezing is used electric
heat tracing.
For Ppipes located in the Engine Room and Accommodation do not require insulation, it is
not required to be insulated, ambient temperature is 5-45C and 20-24C.
Hot water
For Tthe system of hot water supply, have water is circulating continuously through the
pipes to maintain a minimum temperature of 60C, consequently, personnel protection
insulation shall be used. and is used for insulated personnel protection.
Deck wash
In weather conditions where freezing may occur, the system is supplied with drain valve
fitted at the lowest point, where water could be completely drained.

Water cooling
Water cooling system is arranged both on upper deck and in the engine room. Water cooling
pipes on upper deck shall be insulated against freezing. For The pipes that are inside the
Engine Room, no heat tracing or freezing and insulation is foreseen required as ambient
temperature is over the freezing limit. The ambient temperature inside E.R being over the
freezing limit and pipes on upper deck will be insulated.
Compressed Air, Tank Vent and Sounding
These pipes Normally these pipes do not normally come into contact with liquid, either inside
or outside, so insulation is not required. and it is not necessary to be insulated these pipes.

Steam, Boiler & Exhaust Gas System

Insulation must be fitted around steam piping to lower surface temperature below 50C, to
reduce the risk of fire in machinery spaces.

Washing Water Tank

The operating temperature for washing water is 40-65C, and after washing the tanks the
pipe will be is emptyied.

Formatted: Normal

FIRE FIGHTING
The fire fightingfirefighting take-off branches of ND 3" to 8" should be heat loss protected
with insulation for pipes below 3" insulation and electrical heat tracing (anti-ex for zone 1, ii
b/t3) shall be provided.
The pipes on deluge valve skid outlet are normally empty and no freezing protection is
required

Open Drain System

Requirements for insulation and heat tracing of open drain lines are not foreseen, as the
open drain lines will be self drainedself-drained. However, heat-tracing insulation should be
provided if the effects of freezing are identified as being critical. Liquid seals can freeze and
block drainage. Heat tracing and insulation of liquid seals will be required if constant flow
cannot be achieved.
