Max 2
(b)

While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them, Set apart for me
Barnabas and Saul, to do the work to which I have called them.

(Acts 13:2)

(i) Describe the work to which God had called them.

Acts 9:15-16 The Lord told Ananias that He had chosen Paul to serve Him, to make His name known to
Gentiles and kings and to the people of Israel. [1]
And God will show him all that he must suffer for His sake. [1]

[2]

(ii) How had Barnabas and Saul been doing this work before the incident above happened?
Acts 11:25-26 When the Gentile church in Antioch of Syria grew too large for Barnabas alone,
he went to Tarsus to look for Saul. [1]
When he found him, he took him to Antioch, and for a whole year
the two met with the people of the church and taught a large group. [1]

[2]

It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians. [1]

Max 2

(iii) What conclusion did the two men come to at the end of the First Missionary Journey?
Acts 14:27 When they returned Antioch-of-Syria, they gathered the people of the church together
and told them about all that God had done with them and

(c)

We had been there for several days when a prophet named Agabus arrived from Judea.
(i) Where did this incident take place?

(Acts 21:10)
[1]

In the house of Philip the evangelist in Caesarea

(ii) What did Agabus do and say when he arrived?

Acts 21:11 Agabus arrived from Jerusalem. He took Paul's belt, tied up his own feet and hands with it, [1]
and said, This is what the Holy Spirit says: The owner of this belt will be tied up in this way
by the Jews in Jerusalem, and they will hand him over to the Gentiles. [1]

[2]

(iii) How did the disciples react to Agabus message?

Acts 21:12 The disciples begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem.

[1]

(iv) What did Paul say in response to them?

Acts 21:13 He answered, (What are you doing, crying like this and breaking my heart? )

(d)

As Paul defended himself in this way, Festus shouted at him, You are mad, Paul! Your great
learning is driving you mad!

(Acts 26:25)

(i)
Acts 26:22-23

Why did Festus shout that Paul was mad?

Paul said that what the prophets and Moses prophesied had happened. Messiah had come, [1]
had suffered and was the first one to rise from death, (and had announced the light of salvation
to the Jews and to the Gentiles.) [1]

(ii)
Acts 26:25-27

What was Pauls reply to him and to King Agrippa?

[2]
Paul said he was not mad but was speaking the sober truth. [1]
The he said that King Agrippa knew about all those things and had taken notice of every one of them,

3.

(a) Jesus spent a great deal of time in Capernaum, the hometown of Simon Peter. Give an account of
the following events that took place on his first Sabbath in Capernaum.
(i) In the synagogue
Luke 4:31-36
Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath.
They were all amazed at the way he taught, because he spoke with authority. [1]
There was a man who had the spirit of an evil demon in him; he screamed out in a loud voice, [1]
Ah! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? [1]
I know who you are: you are God's holy messenger! [1]

[6]

Jesus ordered the spirit, Be quiet and come out of the man! [1]
The demon threw the man down in front of them [1]
and went out of him without doing him any harm.
The people were all amazed and said to one another, What kind of words are these?
With authority and power this man gives orders to the evil spirits, and they come out! [1]
And the report about Jesus spread everywhere in that region.
(ii) In Simon Peters home
Luke 4:38-39
Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's home.
Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, [1] and they spoke to Jesus about her.
He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. [1]
The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them. [1]

Max 6

Max 2

(iii) In the street.

Luke 4:40-41
After sunset all who had friends who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; [1]
he placed his hands on every one of them and healed them all.
Demons also went out from many people, screaming, You are the Son of God! [1]
Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. [1]
Max 2
(b) State the answer Jesus gave to the people who persuaded him to stay in Capernaum
when they found him the following day in a lonely place.
Luke 4:43
He said to them, I must preach the Good News about the Kingdom of God in other towns also, [1]
because that is what God sent me to do. [1]

[2]

[2]

(c) Comment on the significance of these events.

[3]
There seemed to have been a flurry of activity on the part of the demons at the start of Jesus ministry on earth. [1]
The evil spirit in the man in the synagogue challenged Jesus and said that he knew that he was Gods holy messenger. /
Simon Peters mother-in-law had a fever that may have been caused by an evil spirit because Jesus ordered the fever to leave
her. /
After sunset, as the crowds brought their sick to Jesus, the evil spirits declared that he was the Son of God, the Messiah. [1]
The territory of the evil spirits on earth had been broken into by Jesus and the evil spirits knew they had to submit to Jesus
command. (Compare Luke 11:21-22) [1]
Max 2
Jesus would not allow the evil spirits to speak and declare that he was the Messiah because he had work to do for another three
years. [1]
He had to preach the Good News about the Kingdom of God in other places as well. He knew what his mission was. [1]
Max 1
4 (a) Relate the incident when a rich Jewish leader asked Jesus how he could receive
eternal life and the conversation that Jesus had with the crowd of people after that.
[11]
Luke 18:18-29
A Jewish leader asked Jesus, Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life? [1]
Why do you call me good? Jesus asked him. No one is good except God alone. [1]
You know the commandments: [1]
Do not commit adultery; do not commit murder; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; respect your father and your
mother. [2 marks for all 5 commandments, 1 mark for 3 commandments]
The man replied, Ever since I was young, I have obeyed all these commandments. [1]

YLMoey/Trial/ms2012

Jesus said to him, There is still one more thing you need to do.
Sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; [1] then come and follow me. [1]
But when the man heard this, he became very sad, because he was very rich. [1]
Max 7
Jesus saw that he was sad and said, How hard it is for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God! [1]
It is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than
for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. [1]
The people who heard him asked, Who, then, can be saved? [1]
Jesus answered, What is humanly impossible is possible for God. [1]
Then Peter said, Look! We have left our homes to follow you. [1]
Yes, Jesus said to them, and I assure you that anyone who leaves home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake
of the Kingdom of God will receive much more in this present age and eternal life in the age to come. [1]
Max4
(b) Mention two parables Jesus told that illustrate this principle that it is difficult
for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.
[2]
Luke 12:13-21 Parable of the Rich Fool
Luke 16:19-31 Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus
(c) State clearly what these two parables teach concerning our attitude to riches.
[2]
The parable of the rich fool teaches us to guard ourselves from every form of greed;
because a persons life is not made up of the things he owns, no matter how rich he may be. [1]
It also teaches us to trust in God who gives us true riches to enjoy rather than to trust in earthly possessions which do not last. [1]
Max 1
The parable of the rich man and Lazarus teaches that if we do not obey Scripture and we live to enjoy the money and resources
that God has given us only for ourselves, then we would face our just rewards when we meet God face to face. [1]
It shows the fate of a rich man living in selfish pleasure and luxury with total disregard of the poor man at his doorstep. /
It shows the fearful punishment of those who do not use their stewardship of wealth in the right way. [1]

(a) Describe the scene of the crucifixion, paying special attention to the people
mentioned, what they did and what they said.
Luke 23:32-49
Two other men, both of them criminals, were also led out to be put to death with Jesus.
When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there, [1]
and the two criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. [1]

[12]

Jesus said, Forgive them, Father! They don't know what they are doing. [1]
They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice. [1]
The people stood there watching while the Jewish leaders
made fun of him: He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah whom God has chosen! [1]
The soldiers also made fun of him: they came up to him and offered him cheap wine, [1]
and said, Save yourself if you are the king of the Jews! [1]
Above him were written these words: This is the King of the Jews. [1]
One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him: Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us! [1]
The other one, however, rebuked him, saying, Don't you fear God? You received the same sentence he did. /
Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong. [1]
And he said to Jesus, Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King! /
Jesus said to him, I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me. [1]
It was about twelve o'clock when the sun stopped shining and darkness covered the whole country until three o'clock; / and the
curtain hanging in the Temple was torn in two. [1]

YLMoey/Trial/ms2012

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Father! In your hands I place my spirit! He said this and died. [1]
The army officer saw what had happened, and he praised God, saying, Certainly he was a good man! [1]
When the people who had gathered there to watch the spectacle saw what happened, they all went back home, beating their
breasts in sorrow. [1]
All those who knew Jesus personally, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance to watch. [1]
Max 12
(b) Discuss the significance of the three statements that Jesus made while he hung on the cross.
[3]
1 The first statement, Father, forgive them; for they dont know what they are doing! shows how magnanimous Jesus is.
Under such severe pain and torture such as crucifixion, he still thought of the welfare of other people with God. This
statement shows his mission in life. [1]
2 The second statement, I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me., shows that Jesus has the key
to Paradise. He is the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except by Jesus. [1]
3 The third statement, Father! In your hands I place my spirit! shows that he knew what would happen to him. He knew the
place to which he was going. He knew the Father was standing by him. He died as a victor and not as a victim. [1]

6 (a) Describe the election of the seven deacons.

[6]
Acts 6:1-6
As the number of disciples kept growing, there was a quarrel between the Greek-speaking Jews and the native Jews.
The Greek-speaking Jews claimed that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of funds. [1]
So the twelve apostles called the whole group of believers together and said, It is not right for us to neglect the preaching of
God's word in order to handle finances. [1]
So then, friends, choose seven men among you who are known to be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and we will put them in
charge of this matter. [1]
We ourselves, then, will give our full time to prayer and the work of preaching. [1]
The whole group was pleased with the apostles' proposal, [1]
so they chose (Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip,) Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, [1]
Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a Gentile from Antioch who had earlier been converted to Judaism. [1]
The group presented them to the apostles, who prayed and placed their hands on them. [1]
(b) What effect did this incident have on the growth of the early church?
Acts 6:7 The word of God continued to spread.
The number of disciples in Jerusalem grew larger and larger, [1]
and a great number of priests accepted the faith. [1]

Max 6
[2]

(c) Discuss the impact of the ministry of these two men on the expansion of the church.
(i) Stephen
[4]
Acts 6:8-10 Stephen, a man richly blessed by God and full of power, performed great miracles
and wonders among the people. [1]
But he was opposed by some men who were members of the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), which had Jews from
Cyrene and Alexandria. They and other Jews from the provinces of Cilicia and Asia started arguing with Stephen.
But the Spirit gave Stephen such wisdom that when he spoke, they could not refute him. [1]
Acts 7 In his defense before the Sanhedrin Council, Stephen taught that the worship of God was not confined to any one nation,
city or temple. He could be worshipped anywhere as seen in the examples of Abraham, Joseph, Moses and when the Jews entered
the promised land. [1]
He was ahead of the apostles in his teaching and maintained that people are acceptable to God without having to go through the
Jewish rituals. [1]
Acts 8:4-5, 11:19-20 After Stephen was stoned, the church was scattered and the believers went everywhere, beyond Jerusalem,
preaching the message. Philip went to Samaria while some others went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, telling the
message to Jews only. [1]
Then men from Cyprus and Cyrene went to Antioch-of-Syria and preached to the Gentiles. [1]
Acts 9:15-16 Stephens defense and death impacted Saul of Tarsus deeply and when he was converted he became a missionary
to the Gentiles. [1]
Max 4
(ii) Philip
Acts 8:5-25 Philip had no racial prejudice and went to the town of Samaria after the death of Stephen.
He preached powerfully and multitudes turned to the Lord. [1]
Even Simon, the magician was baptized.

YLMoey/Trial/ms2012

[3]

Acts 8:26-40 Then the Lord called him to leave Samaria and go to the road that led to Gaza and there he met the Ethiopian
eunuch, a proselyte, who subsequently was converted and baptized. He returned home to Ethiopia, rejoicing greatly and must
have preached the gospel there. [1]
Philip was caught up by the Lord and was found at Azotus. From there he preached the gospel to all the villages until
he came to Caesarea. [1]
He settled in Caesarea, was married and had four unmarried daughters who were trained by him to declare the gospel. [1]
Caesarea was the headquarters of the Roman Government in Judea and Philip would have preached the gospel to
some of them. When they returned home to Rome, they would have taken the gospel there. [1]
Max 3

7 (a) (i) What special miracles did Paul perform in Ephesus?

[2]

Acts 19:11-12 (God was performing unusual miracles through Paul.)

Even handkerchiefs and aprons he had used were taken to the sick, [1]
and their diseases were driven away, and the evil spirits would go out of them. [1]
(ii) Describe the incident when the seven sons of Sceva tried to exorcise a man.
Acts 19:13-16 Some Jews who traveled around and drove out evil spirits also tried to
use the name of the Lord Jesus to do this. [1]
They said to the evil spirits, I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches. [1]
Seven brothers, who were the sons of a Jewish High Priest named Sceva, were doing this.

[5]

But the evil spirit said to them, I know Jesus, and I know about Paul; but youwho are you? [1]
The man who had the evil spirit in him attacked them with such violence that he overpowered them all. [1]
They ran away from his house, wounded and with their clothes torn off. [1]
(iii) How did this incident affect the witness in Ephesus?
Acts 19:17-20
All the Jews and Gentiles who lived in Ephesus heard about this; [1]
they were all filled with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was given greater honor. [1]
Many of the believers came, publicly admitting and revealing what they had done. [1]
Many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in public.
They added up the price of the books, and the total came to fifty thousand silver coins. [1]
In this powerful way the word of the Lord[c] kept spreading and growing stronger. [1]
(b) Narrate the incident when Paul delivered the slave girl from the evil spirit in Philippi.
Acts 16:16-18
As Paul, Timothy, Silas and Dr Luke were going to the place of prayer,
they were met by a young servant woman who had an evil spirit that enabled her to predict the future. /
She earned a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. [1]
She followed Paul and us, shouting, These men are servants of the Most High God! [1]
They announce to you how you can be saved! [1]
She did this for many days, until Paul became so upset that he turned around and
said to the spirit, In the name of Jesus Christ I order you to come out of her! [1]
The spirit went out of her that very moment.
(c) From these two incidents what can you conclude about the knowledge that evil spirits have?
In both incidents the evil spirits knew who the disciples of Jesus were. [1]
They know Jesus and they were afraid of him. [1]
They knew that Jesus disciples would tell the message of salvation to people. [1]

8 (a) Give an account of the meetings between Paul and the Jewish leaders and people in Rome.

[12]
Acts 28:17-28
Three days after Paul arrived in Rome, [1] he called the local Jewish leaders to a meeting.
When they had gathered, he said to them, My fellow Israelites, even though I did nothing against our people or the customs that
we received from our ancestors, I was made a prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. [1]
After questioning me, the Romans wanted to release me, because they found that I had done nothing
for which I deserved to die. [1]
But when the Jews opposed this, I was forced to appeal to the Emperor, [1]
even though I had no accusation to make against my own people. [1]
That is why I asked to see you and talk with you.
As a matter of fact, I am bound in chains like this for the sake of him for whom the people of Israel hope. [1]

YLMoey/Trial/ms2012

They said to him, We have not received any letters from Judea about you, nor have any of our people come from there with any
news or anything bad to say about you. [1]
But we would like to hear your ideas, because we know that everywhere people speak against
this party to which you belong. [1]
So they set a date with Paul, and a large number of them came that day to the place where Paul was staying. [1]
From morning till night he explained to them his message about the Kingdom of God, and he tried to convince them about Jesus
by quoting from the Law of Moses and the writings of the prophets. [1]
Some of them were convinced by his words, but others would not believe. [1]
So they left, disagreeing among themselves, after Paul had said this one thing: How well the Holy Spirit spoke through the
prophet Isaiah to your ancestors! [1]
For he said,
Go and say to this people:
You will listen and listen, but not understand;
you will look and look, but not see,
because this people's minds are dull,
and they have stopped up their ears
and closed their eyes. [1]
Otherwise, their eyes would see,
their ears would hear,
their minds would understand, [1]
and they would turn to me, says God,
and I would heal them. [1]
And Paul concluded: You are to know, then, that God's message of salvation has been sent to the Gentiles. They will listen! [1]
Max 12

(b) Why does the book of Acts end with Paul in prison in Rome?
[3]
Dr Luke had written the book of Acts to instruct Theophilus, a new believer, in his faith. He set out the structure of the book in
the theme verse, Acts 1:8, which says
But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me
in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. [1]
The growth of the church in Jerusalem, spreading to all of Judea and Samaria, and finally to Rome, the capital of the world at that
time, had been achieved when Paul arrived there, nonetheless, as a prisoner. The gospel had reached the ends of the earth. [1]
Dr Luke had not set out to write a biography of Paul. [1]
Thus he was able to put his pen down when Paul, the apostle, reached Rome.
Hence we see the apostle in Rome, welcoming all who came to see him and preaching about the Kingdom of God and teaching
about the Lord Jesus Christ, speaking with all boldness and freedom. [1]
