ShabeMe`rajthat,accordingtoIslamictradition,theprophetofIslam,Muhammadtookduringasingle
nightaroundtheyear621.Ithasbeendescribedasbothaphysicalandspiritualjourney.[1]Abriefsketchof
thestoryisinsura17AlIsraoftheQuran,[2]andotherdetailscomefromtheHadith,supplemental
writingsaboutthelifeofMuhammad.Inthejourney,MuhammadtravelsonthesteedBuraqto"thefarthest
mosque"whereheleadsotherprophetsinprayer.HethenascendstoheavenwherehespeakstoGod,who
givesMuhammadinstructionstotakebacktothefaithfulregardingthedetailsofprayer.However,this
storyiscontestedas"thefurthest"mosqueatthattimewasnowhereneartheCityofJerusalem.
Accordingtotraditions,thejourneyisassociatedwiththeLailatalMi'raj,asoneofthemostsignificant
eventsintheIslamiccalendar.[3]

beliefwasbroughttomeandmybodywascutopenfromthethroattothelowerpartofthe
abdomenandthenmyabdomenwaswashedwithZamzamwaterand(myheartwas)filled
withwisdomandbelief.

exchangedasinthepreviousheavens.ThereImetandgreetedIbrahimwhosaid,'Youare
welcomedOsonandaProphet.'
ThenIwasshownAlBaitalMa'mur(i.e.Allah'sHouse).IaskedJibreelaboutitandhesaid,
ThisisAlBaitulMa'murwhere70,000angelsperformprayersdailyandwhentheyleavethey
neverreturntoit(butalwaysafreshbatchcomesintoitdaily).'
ThenIwasshownSidratalMuntaha(i.e.atreeintheseventhheaven)andIsawitsNabk
fruitswhichresembledtheclayjugsofHajr(i.e.atowninArabia),anditsleaveswerelikethe
earsofelephants,andfourriversoriginatedatitsroot,twoofthemwereapparentandtwowere
hidden.IaskedJibreelaboutthoseriversandhesaid,'ThetwohiddenriversareinParadise,
andtheapparentonesaretheNileandtheEuphrates.'
Thenfiftyprayerswereenjoinedonme.IdescendedtillImetMoseswhoaskedme,'What
haveyoudone?'Isaid,'Fiftyprayershavebeenenjoinedonme.'Hesaid,'Iknowthepeople
betterthanyou,becauseIhadthehardestexperiencetobringBaniIsraeltoobedience.Your
followerscannotputupwithsuchobligation.So,returntoyourLordandrequestHim(to
reducethenumberofprayers).'IreturnedandrequestedAllah(forreduction)andHemadeit
forty.Ireturnedand(metMoses)andhadasimilardiscussion,andthenreturnedagaintoAllah
forreductionandHemadeitthirty,thentwenty,thenten,andthenIcametoMoseswho
repeatedthesameadvice.UltimatelyAllahreducedittofive.WhenIcametoMosesagain,he
said,'Whathaveyoudone?'Isaid,'Allahhasmadeitfiveonly.'Herepeatedthesameadvice
butIsaidthatIsurrendered(toAllah'sFinalOrder)'"Allah'sApostlewasaddressedbyAllah,
"IhavedecreedMyObligationandhavereducedtheburdenonMyservants,andIshallreward
asinglegooddeedasifitweretengooddeeds.

bigearthenwarevessels.AndwhenitwascoveredbytheCommandofAllah,itunderwent
suchachangethatnoneamongstthecreationhasthepowertopraiseitsbeauty.
ThenAllahrevealedtomearevelationandHemadeobligatoryformefiftyprayerseveryday
andnight.ThenIwentdowntoMoses(peacebeuponhim)andhesaid:WhathasyourLord
enjoineduponyourUmmah?Isaid:Fiftyprayers.Hesaid:ReturntothyLordandbegfor
reduction(inthenumberofprayers),foryourcommunityshallnotbeabletobearthisburden
asIhaveputtotestthechildrenofIsrailandtriedthem(andfoundthemtooweaktobearsuch
aheavyburden).
He(theHolyProphet)said:IwentbacktomyLordandsaid:MyLord,makethingslighterfor
myUmmah.(TheLord)reducedfiveprayersforme.IwentdowntoMosesandsaid.(The
Lord)reducedfive(prayers)forme,Hesaid:VerilythyUmmahshallnotbeabletobearthis
burdenreturntothyLordandaskHimtomakethingslighter.
IthenkeptgoingbackandforthbetweenmyLordBlessedandExaltedandMoses,tillHesaid:
Therearefiveprayerseverydayandnight.OMuhammad,eachbeingcreditedasten,sothat
makesfiftyprayers.Hewhointendstodoagooddeedanddoesnotdoitwillhaveagooddeed
recordedforhimandifhedoesit,itwillberecordedforhimastenwhereashewhointends
todoanevildeedanddoesnotdo,itwillnotberecordedforhimandifhedoesit,onlyone
evildeedwillberecorded.

Religiousbelief
TheIsraisthepartofthejourneyofMuhammadfromMeccatoJerusalem.ItbeganwhenMuhammadwas
intheMasjidalHaram,andthearchangelGabrielcametohim,andbroughtBuraq,thetraditionalheavenly
steedoftheprophets.BuraqcarriesMuhammadtotheMasjidAlAqsa,the"FarthestMosque",in
Jerusalem.Muhammadalights,tethersBuraqtotheTempleMountandperformsprayer,whereonGod's
commandheistestedbyJibriel.[8][9]ItwastoldbyAnasibnMalikthatMuhammadsaid:"Jibrilbrought
meavesselofwineandavesselofmilk,andIchosethemilk.Jibrilsaid:'YouhavechosentheFitrah

originallyintendedinterpretationoftheQuran.MuslimsusedtopraytowardsJerusalem,butMuhammad
changedthisdirection,theQibla,toinsteaddirectMuslimstofacetowardstheKaabainMeccaonthebasis
ofhavingreceiveddivineintervention.

celebratingtheIsraandMi'raj.SomeMuslimscelebratethiseventbyofferingoptionalprayersduringthis
night,andinsomeMuslimcountries,byilluminatingcitieswithelectriclightsandcandles.The
celebrationsaroundthisdaytendtofocusoneveryMuslimwhowantstocelebrateit.Worshippersgather
intomosquesandperformprayerandsupplication.Somepeoplemaypasstheirknowledgeontoothersby
informingthemThestoryonhowMuhammad'sheartwaspurifiedbyanarchangel(Gabriel)whofilledhim
withknowledgeandfaithinpreparationtoenterthesevenlevelsofheaven.Afterprayer(salat,wherethe

TheAlAqsaMosquemarkstheplacefromwhichMuhammadisbelievedtohaveascendedtoheaven.The
exactdateoftheJourneyisnotclear,butiscelebratedasthoughittookplacebeforetheHijraandafter
Muhammad'svisittothepeopleofTaif.Itisconsideredbysometohavehappenedjustoverayearbefore
theHijra,onthe27thofRajabbutthisdateisnotalwaysrecognized.Thisdatewouldcorrespondtothe
JuliandateofFebruary26,621,or,iffromthepreviousyear,March8,620.InShi'aIranforexample,
Rajab27isthedayofMuhammad'sfirstcallingorMab'as.TheAlAqsaMosqueandsurroundingarea,
