All Questions carry equal marks

1. Define the equations and notations for Dalton s law, Raoult s law and relative
volatility of an ideal vapour-liquid equilibrium system. [16]
2. Referring to the figure shown below, write the force balance equation for the
liquid
flowing through the pipe of cross sectional area Ap (m2) and length L (m). The
velocity of the liquid flow through the pipe is v (m/s). The vertical cylindrica
l
tank has a cross-sectional area of AT (m2). The density of the liquid is ? (kg/m
3).
Assume the flow is turbulent, plug flow and the fluid is incompressible. State a

other assumptions you make and explain the notation scheme used clearly.as shown
in the figure1 below

3. A fluid of constant density ? is pumped at a flow rate Fo into a cone shaped
tank
of total volume HpR2/3 where H and R are height and radius of the conical tank
respectively. The flow out of the bottom of the tank F is proportional to the sq
uare
root of the height h of the liquid in the tank. Derive the equations describing
the
system. [16]
4. Derive the equations for liquid and vapor Dynamics model of single component
vaporizer. [16]
5. Develop a mathematical model for ideal binary distillation column. [16]
6. Explain the following convergence methods
(a) False Position

(b) Explicit Convergence methods. [16]
7. (a) Simulate the series of open loop three isothermal CSTRs using Newton Rapshon method.
(b) Simulate the series of closed loop three isothermal CSTRs using Newton Rapshon method. [8+8]
8. Develop a mathematical model for the dynamic behaviour of a binary distillati
on
column. Assume each stage to be non-ideal with murphee stage efficiency being
equal for all stages. Assume the binary liquid mixture to be ideal. State clearl

3. Consider the CSTR process shown in the (figure3) given below. Both a liquid
product stream F and a vapour product stream Fv (volumetric flow) are withdrawn
from the vessel. The pressure in the reactor is P. Vapour and liquid volumes are
Vv
and V. The density and temperature of the vapour phase are ?v and Tv. The mole
fraction of A in the vapour is y. If the phases are in thermal equilibrium, the
vapour
and liquid temperatures are equal (T = Tv). If the phases are in phase equilibri
um,
the liquid and vapour compositions are related by Raoult s law, a relative volatil
ity
relationship or some other vapor-liquid equilibrium relationship. The enthalpy o

the vapour phase H (cal/g) is a function of composition y, temperature Tv, and

write the energy equation for the system. State the assumptions made and explain
the notation scheme used.
