EMP SURVIVAL
TOP TEN DEVICES THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE
AFTER AN EMP STRIKE!

Needless to say, an EMP strike against the United States remains

one of the worst possible disasters that could ever befall us. To be
plunged into the dark ages without power, communications, or the
other vital modern conveniences that have become essential to life
in this country would be hellish. It is estimated that over 200 million
people might eventually die from the effects of an EMP strike on this
nation; most of these deaths would occur some time after the EMP
struck from untreated water, lack of power, and generally poor living
conditions. While theres not much you can do to prevent an EMP
strike, there is quite a bit you can do right now to prepare for one.
Here is a list of devices and equipment that you need to have in order
to survive:

#10 FLASHLIGHTS
Life after an EMP might just be life without power for
a long, long time. Realize that before the advent of
electrical power, people set the rhythm of their lives
to the sun, rising early when it rose, and going to bed
shortly after dusk. The reason for this really revolves
around the lighting situation. The poorer one was, the
less they could waste things like candles and lamp oil
on staying up late its not as if there was TV to watch
nor was there a great abundance of reading material
for the common folk. Basically, when it was dark, you
went to bed.
With the dawn of the 19th century came gas fired
lamps to those who could afford them. Some homes
started using gas fixtures for light and candles and
lamps became popular forms of light, albeit ones
that needed to be replenished often. A chandler, who
made candles and wax goods for a living, was a busy
person.
The problem with todays society is that candles are
mainly decorative in nature and not in great supply,
1

EMP SURVIVAL
nor are they appropriate for general lighting. Hardly anyone owns an
oil lamp; families that do barely know how to use them. Flashlights
and lanterns, therefore, will fetch a premium in a post EMP world.
We still require light after dark for a variety of reasons, security
being one of them. Additionally, our homes were not designed to
use anything but electric light, and many of them are overly dark and
unsafe at night. Flashlights of all types will be worth their weight in
gold.
Clearly there is a finite
supply of batteries and
one should select a
type of light that isnt
too battery intensive.
Modern LED flashlights
are almost perfect for this
task. They are insanely
bright (some small
models that fit in the
palm of your hand put
out over 200 lumens) and they are relatively easy on batteries as long
as they are not constantly used on their brightest settings. Modern
aluminum bodied lights like Maglite and Surefire brands are also
water and shockproof. There is one caveat with these lights however;
an LED light is sensitive to the E1 and E3 pulses from an EMP strike
and thus these lights must be stored in a shielded enclosure to
prevent them from being rendered useless by the strike.
Avoid incandescent bulb type hardware store flashlights as they use
bulky D and C cell batteries, dont put out much light, and are heavy
if youre on the move. If you have an opportunity to buy some of
these at a good price, by all means, do so as they may prove handy
for barter. Your own personal flashlights should be of the highest
quality as there is no telling when they might be replaced again.

EMP SURVIVAL
#9 INVERTER
Recall that an EMP strike will
severely damage the power
grid, which may take years
to repair as the components
for repair are not readily
available. You will essentially
be without AC power for
months or even years, yet
there is some important
equipment that needs to run
on AC that you will want to
operate, hence, an inverter is
needed.
An inverter is nothing more
than a device that converts
DC voltage to AC voltage.
Inverters come in all shapes
and sizes, from small units of
2-300 watts that will run cell
phone chargers and very small power tools all the way up to 3000
watt units that will run large power tools, televisions, and computers.
Most low end inverters are square wave units that are unsuitable for
running sensitive electronics; the high end ones are modified sine
wave units that will run computers and other equipment. Inverters
get their power from a DC source such as a car battery or golf cart
battery (or a bank of batteries).
Clearly, the DC side of the equation, namely, the battery needs
a method of recharging or else it will eventually run out of steam.
There are several ways of doing this in a normal situation; a bank of
solar panels charges a large, deep cycle battery bank, which in turn
runs an inverter, providing AC voltage. This will probably not function
after an EMP, as the functionality of solar panels is unknown when
exposed to EMP.
A vehicle, however, represents the perfect melding of a DC power

EMP SURVIVAL
system and an inverter. How? Simple the cars battery is charged by
the cars own alternator. As long as the car has gas, it will charge the
battery. Normal car batteries will last for several years. Also, it has
been shown that most cars, contrary to popular belief, will remain
unaffected by the EMP and in the worst case need to have their
batteries disconnected and rebooted. There will be many abandoned
vehicles, batteries, and plenty of fuel not long after an EMP, resulting
in a great platform to run an inverter on and provide AC power.
Why not just use a generator? There are several reasons for that.
First of all, a generator is very loud and will draw way too much
attention to your home. It sends a signal that whoever is within
distance has fuel and something that needs to be powered, and
perhaps supplies and things of value. If need be, an inverter can
be run silently and with just the car battery (even with the battery
temporarily taken out of the car) to power something with no noise
at all. Also, an inverter can be moved from battery to battery
usually these units are not much bigger than a decent size phone
book. A generator is not portable and requires fuel as well. An idling
car is nearly silent unless youre right on top of it. Finally, an inverter
is easily shielded in case of EMP and can be put away for storage; a
generator represents a larger footprint and cannot be shielded from
the effects of EMP as easily.

#8 FIREARMS
When seconds count, the
police are only minutes
away and thats in the
best case scenario. After
an EMP strike, expect
most first responders to
be dealing with their own
loved ones rather than
yours. Realize that the ratio
of first responders specifically police - to the general population
is very small. A city like Los Angeles, for example, has about 10,000
officers to keep 5+ million people in check. Not very favorable odds!
4

EMP SURVIVAL
It is incumbent on you to defend your family that responsibility
does not belong to the fire or police chief, nor to the mayor,
governor, or even president. The responsibility of self defense falls
squarely on your shoulders. While there are other methods of self
defense beyond firearms, none are as practical, effective, or easy to
use in defense of life or property. An 80 year old man in a wheelchair
can pick up a revolver and kill an intruder he needs very little
training to accomplish this task. Consider that martial arts and less
than lethal training, while definitely having a place, cannot ultimately
replace firearms completely.
Post EMP, anyone of age that can carry a firearm should. Pistols will
most likely be the go-to gun for self defense. Although pistols lack
in just about every comparison to rifles, they have two redeeming
features; they are available and concealable. Part of life after an EMP
strike will involve keeping a low profile, and having an assault rifle
slung across your back is not in keeping with that thought.
Battle rifles in military calibers such as 5.56 NATO, .223 Remington,
.308 Winchester, and 7.62 x 39 should be kept at home and reserved
for the defense of your house from defensible positions. A rifle has
capacity, knock down power, and range going for it, which makes it a
great home weapon.
Two other types of firearms bear mention: a scoped rifle for hunting
and other targets out to ranges beyond that of a battle rifle, and a
shotgun for close quarters defense. A scoped rifle in varmint calibers
such as .22LR makes an excellent hunting weapon; .243 and similar
calibers allows one to hunt deer and people if need be, and .308 is
perfect for both man and beast alike. Shotguns, on the other hand,
should be tactically oriented with magazine extension tubes and
slings with integrated bandoliers so as to carry ammo right on the
gun.
Each magazine fed weapon ought to have at least five magazines per
weapon, more if you can afford it. Primarily focusing on magazine
fed weapons allows one to carry plenty of ammo and recharge the
weapon quickly. With the advent of magazine fed shotguns like
the Saiga 12, that philosophy carries forward to shotguns as well.
5

EMP SURVIVAL
Magazines are reliable, hold lots of ammo, and can be replaced in
seconds.
Most modern weapons dont really require spare parts per se, but
make sure you have cleaning supplies, as they still need maintenance.
Also, keep your familys weapons in common calibers i.e., everyone
carries .45 ACP pistols and 5.56 NATO rifles, for example. This allows
ammo interchangeability in case of emergencies. Ideally, everyone
will have the same model of weapon so as to make the magazines
interchangeable.

#7 AMMUNITION
The reason that ammunition is more important than
firearms in this top ten list is because ammunition
will be a commodity after an EMP strike, potentially
more so than weapons. In your preparations for EMP
(or any other disaster for that matter), you should
seek to stock lots of ammunition in many varied
calibers. This is because historically, ammunition
has been a barter item and doubles as currency in
some cases. Think about it for a moment when
cash is useless and silver cant be eaten, a box of .22
Long Rifle is more valuable than both to a desperate
father. It can be used to hunt for food or fend off
bandits. Ammunition is literally worth its weight in
gold.
From a practical standpoint, you should seek to
purchase your firearms in what are called common
calibers. What is common in your neck of the woods is dependent
on several factors. A rifle chambered in .243 Winchester, for example,
might be extremely common in deer country, but totally uncommon
elsewhere. You want to accomplish two goals when buying
ammunition: 1) buy ammo that others want, and 2) buy ammo in
calibers that you might readily be able to find.
What do we mean by find? Its pretty simple, really. By purchasing,
say, a handgun in a common military or law enforcement caliber
6

Copyright 2012 Peak 10 Publishing LLC | www.Peak10Publishing.com

EMP SURVIVAL
such as 9mm, 40S&W, or .45 ACP, you will ensure that there will be
a plentiful supply of such ammunition on the bodies of dead soldiers
and cops. While it sounds extremely morbid, one must accept
the battlefield mentality that not all of these people will survive.
Additionally, many of these calibers are widely available at sporting
goods stores. This makes oddball calibers like .38 super, .357 SIG, and
.45 GAP, to name but a few, seem extremely unappealing.
Sure, some people who have weapons chambered in odd calibers
claim that hand loading and home reloading is the answer, but that
has some serious drawbacks. First and foremost, one must possess
the powders, primers, dies, and equipment to reload, and second,
this setup is not particularly mobile in case one needs to move
quickly.
Lastly, the question inevitably arises as to how much ammunition
should be kept on hand. The answer to this is simple, but in two
parts: 1) however much you can afford, and 2) however much you
can fit in your home. Realistically, each battle rifle and pistol should
have several thousand rounds per firearm on hand. If you suddenly
have to move, you will not be able to take all of this with you, as it
will weigh too much. If you are dug in place in your home, however,
youll be able to keep more ammo on hand than you can reasonably
expect to shoot its limited only by available space and funds.

#6 HAM RADIO

A HAM radio is an
extremely versatile
and adaptable
communications device
it essentially has no
parallel. Unlike walkietalkies that are tied
to preset frequencies,
HAM radios can receive
and transmit on

EMP SURVIVAL
thousands of frequencies spanning many bands. Additionally, they
can talk from radio to radio, or via repeater, to just about anywhere
on the globe and some places off the globe (like the International
Space Station). HAMs are easy to learn and the individual units are
robust and rugged.
The best part of HAM radios is the HAM radio operators themselves.
Extremely emergency and disaster oriented, HAMs are usually
prepared for just about anything, including EMPs. HAMs, being
for the most part private citizens, have the ability to set up
mobile repeaters and antennas after a disaster to bring valuable
communications into an area. These repeaters can tie one HAM radio
to another in a daisy chain that can potentially span the continent.
HAM radios also have the ability to listen in and communicate on
frequencies used by first responders. No one should be without this
potentially life saving device.

#5 LAPTOP COMPUTER
The Internet is most
likely the most powerful
tool of knowledge ever
invented. A computer
accessing it can literally
obtain any information
a person wants. After an
EMP strikes, the Internet
will clearly be inaccessible
no power means no
Internet. So whats a
person to do? Get the knowledge right now while its still available!
An ultra prepared person knows that transporting around volumes
of paper books is impractical and heavy all of that information plus
more can fit on the hard drive of a laptop which can be stored in
a shielded enclosure until needed. One can even burn this data to
optical DVDs, as they are impervious to the effects of EMP.

Copyright 2012 Peak 10 Publishing LLC | www.Peak10Publishing.com

EMP SURVIVAL
Data will be a commodity in a world after an EMP strike. How to dig a
well, how to perform minor surgery, how to grow food, how to make
bullets at home, how to maintain a vehicle, how to build an antenna,
how to construct a shelter all of these things are available online
right now. Army field manuals that would weigh thousands of pounds
- yet contain invaluable information can now take up the space of a
DVD with room to spare.
The ancient Egyptians had the worlds biggest repository of
information the library at Alexandria. It was a place where people
journeyed to in order to obtain critical information they could not
access at home. The same rules will apply after an EMP strike it
will be a time of darkness, a time when people cannot obtain basic
information that was once at their finger tips. Be proactive about
getting critical information right now and storing it on a laptop. Even
if that information is not something you personally will use, have a
copy of it in case someone else needs it. It just might be a valuable
commodity in the future!

EMP SURVIVAL
#4 SOLAR CHARGER
An EMP will most likely severely damage the power grid, but that
doesnt mean that there wont be power available after it strikes.
Some wise preppers will have saved some critical devices that need
power to run and will need a method of charging them. Certainly, the
list of devices above will be excellent choices for survival and will be
easy to charge.
A solar charger is the answer to most charging needs on devices like
radios, laptops, and phones. There are many different types and
models of chargers available. Select one that has a combination of
good capacity and a variety of connections so as to charge a variety
of devices. These units consist mainly of a fold out solar panel with
a regulator and a cable that charges the unit in question. Many of
these are reasonably portable and can be folded up and stored inside
a shielded container so they are ready to use just minutes after an
EMP strike.
A decent solar charger should ensure that you have the ability to
charge your phone, radio, laptop, or other small device for literally
years after the time that the power grid goes down. Additionally, no
work is required to charge anything other than leaving the unit in
bright sunlight. A solar charger will be one of those wish you had
devices after an EMP strike!

#3 FIRST AID KIT

The time period

subsequent to an EMP
strike will be a time
where people will live and
die based on the kind of
medical care available.
Due to the conditions and
the general lack of preparedness
of most of the populace, one will see
people die of the silliest, most treatable things
simply because they do not have access to the proper supplies.
Its only within the last hundred or so years that we have been
10

Copyright 2012 Peak 10 Publishing LLC | www.Peak10Publishing.com

EMP SURVIVAL
relatively insulated from the dangers of death from things such as
minor infections, allergies, common illnesses, and living conditions.
Diseases that were once considered lethal are now easily cured
with over the counter medication.
It is simply because the general population is so unprepared that
you must make sure your kit is sound and ready for anything. Having
a first aid kit also does not mean simply going to one of the big box
stores and buying an off the shelf first aid kit and throwing it in a
closet, forgotten. Few first aid kits that are store bought contain the
proper supplies for anything except minor cuts and bruises!
Your first aid kit should focus on what is called tactical medicine,
focusing on large lacerations, puncture wounds (including bullet
wounds) and burns. These sorts of tactical injuries are the kinds of
injuries one would conceivably encounter post EMP. Injuries such as
these rely heavily on the use of compression bandages (not usually
supplied in first aid kits), tourniquets (also not supplied in first aid
kits) and things like sutures and blood coagulant. A tourniquet in and
of itself is a must in an austere environment where medical care is
not immediately available.
Your first aid kit should also have the support of your family doctor;
ask your doctor if he or she will consider dispensing a prescription for
basic antibiotics and painkillers, since these items are potential life
savers in the case of an emergency. The advent of basic antibiotics
has saved millions of people what was once a deadly infection can
now be wiped out with a couple of pills. Get this stuff now and have
your doctor instruct you on basic dosages for antibiotics as well as
their use.
Rounding out your first aid kit should be a healthy supply of any
prescription medications you or your family takes, or even relatives
who you envision staying with you after an EMP, as these will clearly
not be available.

11

EMP SURVIVAL
#2 WATER PURIFIER
You can only live around
three days without water
-it is essential to life. An
EMP will knock out the
power grid and this will
lead to a lack of water in
a very short time. This
is because the water
purification process
requires a healthy dose
of electric power to function. Also, water pipelines use complex
electrically actuated valves and sensors which will not work after an
EMP, meaning that there might be water in a tank up the hill, but it
will have no way of making it down to your house.
The safest way of purifying water is to boil it, but this takes lots of
fuel and is a labor intensive process. Many people will try to drink
naturally occurring surface water after an EMP strike, water such as
ponds, lakes, rivers, and creeks. These waters are usually teeming
with pathogens and as a rule, no matter how clear or clean the water
looks to the naked eye, it must be purified. Drinking unpurified water
exposes you to deadly bacteria such as cryptosporidium and other
nasty beasts that result in anything from sever dysentery to death.
A water purifier will be worth its weight in gold after an EMP strike.
Most of these handheld units work on the principle of a piston
forcing dirty water through a membrane; what comes out the other
end is clean and safe to drink. These devices are portable and light,
meaning you can slip one in every backpack carried by the family.
While the amounts of water these little devices put out are suitable
only for an individual, thats just fine as two or three of these
would supply the drinking water needs of an entire family on the
move. These dont require any power but do require a supply of
replacement membranes, which of course you should obtain in bulk
when you buy the unit.

12

Copyright 2012 Peak 10 Publishing LLC | www.Peak10Publishing.com

EMP SURVIVAL
Lastly, having a water purifier and the ability to treat your own water
means that you can carry less water, which is optimal especially
when youre on the move. Water is one of the heaviest things youll
carry besides ammunition, so it makes sense to be able to make it
wherever you go.

#1 FARADAY CAGE
The reason why an EMP is so potentially damaging is that it sends
three rapid pulses out (two of them, at the speed of light) that induce
dramatic but momentary high voltages and currents within anything
conductive. This means that before the protection systems (such as
fuses and breakers) within a device can catch the over current, they
are already fried. Since none of us will have a warning that an EMP is
about to strike and when it does, it will fry electronics at the speed
of light, it is prudent to keep all of the electronic items mentioned
above in what is called Faraday Cage.
Developed by Michael Faraday in the mid 19th century, a Faraday cage
or enclosure is nothing more than a conductive, sealed container.
This could be something as basic as a metal garbage can! The
way it works is that the electrically conductive container deflects
and protects whatever is inside of it. Most American households
13

Copyright 2012 Peak 10 Publishing LLC | www.Peak10Publishing.com

EMP SURVIVAL
already have a Faraday cage at home its called a microwave oven!
Microwave ovens are nothing more than electrically shielded Faraday
cages with a microwave transmitter within that cooks the food.
Since we only want the food inside the microwave to be cooked, we
shield the transmitter so that microwave rays cant leak out. This
same principle makes an old microwave oven the perfect Faraday
cage. Simply put all your sensitive electronics within, shut the door,
and store for posterity. There are two caveats with this: first, ensure
that whatever is placed within the microwave is wrapped in nonconductive material such as a towel or plastic bag. Second, cut the
cord on the microwave as the E3 pulse of the EMP likes to induce
high voltages in long conductors.
Faraday cages can be made of any 100% conductive enclosures, use
your imagination, and protect everything within by wrapping it in
layers of non-conductive material.
