Santol (Sandoricum Koetjape) Fruit Peeling Expect

As An Antioxidant Property
Introduction:
Philippines is a tropical country, therefore, the fruits here are tropical too, except for those that
are imported and genetically modified. Santol is a tropical which can be found in Southeast-Asian
countries specially ours, Philippines. Santol is scientifically named Sandoricum Koetjape and is named
differently in other areas, other than its common name here in the Philippines.
This Santol fruit tastes sweet, but in some cases like when it is not yet fully ripened, it tastes
bitter. Its seedling is easy to grow for some reasons, like the soil used, the amount of sunlight and many
other reasons. In this research, the researcher will study about antioxidants. An antioxidants is a
molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers
electrons or hydrogen from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free
radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions. It neutralizes harmful compounds called free
radicals that damage living cells, spoil food, and degrade materials such as rubber, gasoline, and
lubricating oils. Antioxidants can take the form of enzymes in the body, vitamin supplements, or
industrial additives.
In this time around, the human body is facing the danger of the free radicals. Free radicals are
molecules with one unpaired electron, or a molecule with two or more unpaired electrons that do not
interact with each other. Free radicals are often vey reactive and unstable. They are common as
transient intermediaries in chemical reactions. Processes involving free radicals are used in the
production of rubber and plastics, for example, and the radicals are common in chain reactions such as
the ones that produce fire. Free radicals might play a role in various maladies, such as arthritis, heart
disease, an Alzheimers disease. When natural enzyme controls fail, free radicals in the body attack
lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Background of the study

Free radical damage living cells and living cells are a part of the human body and human dont
want something dreadful is occurring to their body. This also occurs in body chemistry, in processes such
as the destruction of invading organisms by white blood cells. Thats why the researcher comes up with
a problem concerning antioxidants, this thing neutralizes free radicals. Antioxidants are added to metals,
oils, foodstuffs, and other materials to prevent free radical damage. It can also be found in some foods,
particularly, fruits and vegetables.

Statement of the problem

Main Problem:
Could this Santol fruit peelings extract kill free radicals?
Specific/Sub-problems:
1. How many free radicals in a culture could this Santol extract kill?
2. How much antioxidant would be needed for killing a culture of free radicals?
3. Will this antioxidant extracted from Santol fruit peelings be more effective than those of the others?

Methodology
Procedures/Materials and Equipment
Preparation. First buy the Santol from the market or from the farm or if neighbors have this plant in
their front yard or backyard do not hesitate to pick it. Its peeling have to be removed by peeling it. The
remaining part of the fruit will no longer be needed so it can be thrown away or just eat it. Free radicals
can be brought in a research facility or in a science department or just buying online.
Culturing. In this part, the free radicals that have been bought will be placed in a Petri dish to be
cultured. This will not take time because this kind of organisms can multiply faster than other organisms
Extraction. In chemistry, method used both commercially and in laboratory to separate a substance
from a mixture or solution. This is usually done by using a solvent in which the substance being
extracted is very soluble but the material from which it is being extracted are not. A series of operations
may be needed before the extracted material can be isolated by distillation or evaporation of the
solvent. The substance will be used as an antioxidants which will be the weapon against the free radicals
Date Gathering Procedure
After obtaining the antioxidant extracted from Santol fruit peelings, it will undergo some various tests
and the data to be obtained is in the quantitative form. The properties found in the observation sheet
will be answered by the respondent quantitatively. Every property of the products will be measured
through that various tests.
The data obtained will not be converted anymore because it is already in its quantitative form. There is
no need for asking permission to an expert for the administration of the instrument to the subjects
because the instruments will not be administered but just to be answered by a respondent.
Data Processing Method
After having the quantitative data, it will then be tabulated in a matrix. The study will use a multivariate
matrix due to having plenty dependent variables which are the properties of the extracted Santol fruit
peelings. The mean will also be found in the table to see the average of each variable.
