Abstract
In recent years, there have been rise in the number of applications
based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems and have been
successfully applied to different areas as diverse as transportation,
health-care, agriculture, and hospitality industry to name a few. RFID
technology facilitates automatic wireless identification using electronic
passive and active tags with suitable readers. In my project , I have tried
to solve the recurrent lecture attendance monitoring problem using
RFID technology. The application of RFID to student attendance
monitoring is capable of eliminating the time wasted during manual
collection of attendance and an opportunity for the educational
administrators to capture face-to-face classroom statistics for allocation
of appropriate attendance scores and for further managerial decisions.
The students will be provided with the low cost passive tags. This tags
will be used in the identifying the student. Once the unique id is
received it is sent to the database to keep the record.

INTRODUCTION
Manual attendance is time consuming task. A lot of time can be
saved by switching into an electronic attendance system. Manual
attendance is many a time is erroneous. An electronic based
system database could be easily maintained. So RFID based
attendance system should be implemented.

RFID tags:
RFID Readers are characterized based on:

Different types of design.

Type of power source to be used.
Carrier frequency to be used(LF,HF,UHF).
Method of communication used.
Range of reading.
Data storage capacity.
Memory type and memory used(SRAM , DRAM , EEPROM etc).
Operational life and cost.

TAGS types:

Active(power source for internal circuit and broadcasting)

Passive(no power source)
Semi-active(power source for circuit but rely on reader for
broadcasting).
Advantages of active tags:
Greater communication ranges
Greater data transmission rates.
Larger data storage possible.

OVERALL PROJECT IN A NUTSHELL

The EM-18 module is used to detect the RFID read reader that is
present within the range. The EM-18 module works at 125 KHz with a
read range of 8-10 cm. The tag has its own circuitry which operates by
deriving power from the reader. It has a 12 ASCII data that it transfers
to the reader. Reader receives the data and then sends the data in two
different ways. One is via RS232 and other is by weigand26 format. I
have used the RS232 mode for data transfer. After the data is received
then this data is displayed on the LCD screen. Simultaneously the data
is sent to the PC via serial communication. After the data is received it
arranged in the database in Microsoft access 2010. LabVIEW is used for
receiving the real time data from the processor and send it to Microsoft
access and also provides an interactive window for the user.

VARIOUS HARDWARE USED

1. EM-18 module
2. 2-passive tags
3. ARM7(LPC 2148)
4. Bread board
5. RS232 cable
6. Adapter(5v)

CONCLUSION
The hardware part of the RFID based attendance system is completed
and is successfully interfaced with the ARM processor. The RFID reader
reads the unique-id from any tag that is present within its range and
then sends the data to the processor (LPC2148). The processor then
receives the data from the EM-18(RFID reader) and displays the
received data on the LCD screen. This data is simultaneously sent to the
PC for the database management. Until this part the project is
completed but the database management part is yet to be done.

The next target is to make a database management of received data

using LabVIEW and store it in Microsoft Access 2010.
