1. What is steam turbine?

-A stem turbine is a prime mover in which rotary motion is obtained by the

gradual change of momentum of the steam.
2. What are the basic types of Steam turbine?
1) Impulse Turbine--The pressure of steam is reduced in the fixed nozzle only &
remains constant in moving blade.
2) Reaction TurbineThe Pressure is reduced in both fixed blade as well as
moving blade.
3. Classification of steam turbines:
-The steam turbines are classified into different categories according to following
attributes:
1) Action of steam- (a) Impulse (b) Reaction (c) Impulse-reaction combined
2) No. of stages- (a) Single stage (b) Multistage
3) Direction of steam flow- (a) Axial (b) Radial (c) Mixed (d) Tangential (e)
Helical (f) Re-entry
4) Inlet steam pressure- (a) High pressure (b) Medium pressure (c) Low
pressure
5) Based on the application of turbine- (a) Condensing (b) Extraction (c)
Condensing cum extraction.
4. What is a stage in a steam Turbine?
Stage in steam turbine is a set of moving blades & fixed blades. One stage means
one moving blade & one fixed blade.
5. What is compounding in a steam turbine?
Expansion of steam in several stages (rings) is known as compounding. By
compounding of turbine, turbine speed can be controlled.
6. Types of compounding
1) Velocity compounding
2) Pressure compounding.
3) Pressure velocity compounding.
7. What is the function of a governor in a turbine?
The governor is a device which controls the inlet steam flow according to load.

8. Types of Governing.
a) Throttle governing.
b) Nozzle governing
c) Bypass governing
9. What is critical speed?
The critical speed is the speed at which the natural frequency & actual frequency
of rotor is same. At critical speed, rotor vibration is more
10. What is radial flow of Turbine?
In a radial flow turbine, steam flow outward from the shaft to the casing.
11. What is an extraction turbine?
In an extraction turbine steam is withdrawn from one or more pressures for
heating plant process or feed water heater needs. They are often called Bleeder
turbines.
12. What is Condensing Turbine?
In condensing turbine, steam is condensed in condenser & there will not bleeding
of steam from any of stages.
13. What is the function of a thrust bearing?
Thrust bearing keep the rotor in its correct axial position.
14. In which turbine is tip leakage a problem?
Tip leakage is a problem in reaction turbines. Here each vane forms a nozzle steam
must flow through the moving nozzle to the fixed nozzle. Steam escaping across
the tips of the blades represents a loss of work. Therefore tip seals are used to
prevent this.
15. What basic governors troubles apt to occur?
(a) Hunting means governor is too sensitive to load changes (b) Sticking means
governor is not sensitive to load changes.
16. In a steam turbine where does maximum loss of efficiency occur?
- Heat lost through cooling water in condenser.

17. Where would you look for a fault if the air ejector did not raise enough
vacuum?
- 1) In this case trouble usually in the nozzle you will probably find that nozzle is
eroded.
2) The strainer protecting the nozzle is clogged
3) Steam pressure to the nozzle is too low
18. In which zone of steam turbine has temperature-creep rupture been
observed?
- Damage due to creep is encountered in high temperature (exceeding 455 deg C)
zones
19. What is the function of rupture disc in a condenser?
The rupture disc in condenser acts like protective element against high & low
pressure in the condenser. When pressure exceeds the norms then it bursts.
20. What are the protection classes of turbo generator set?
a) A class trip
b) B class trip
c) C class trip

21. How does deposit formation on turbine blades affect turbine efficiency?
Answer:
About 500 g of deposits distributed more or less evenly all over the blading
section can bring down turbine efficiency by 1%.

22. How does the damage to turbine-blades tell upon the efficiency of the
unit?

The damage to blade profiles changes the geometry of steam flow path and
thereby reducing the efficiency of the unit.
23. How to prevent turbine deposition?
By upgrading the quality of steam. That is by ensuring proper:
1. Boiler feed water quality.
2. Steam boiler model.
3. Boiler design.

24. On which cycle Thermal Power Plant Works.

Power Plant works on Rankine cycle.
25.In which part of the steam turbine does corrosion fatigue occur?
In the wet stages of the LP side ( cylinder.)
26. Efficiency of Turbine----860/Turbine Heat Rate. Efficiency Of extraction
turbine is more than condensing turbine.
