A Message from Reverend Lanier. . .

Fearful Times
Everyone is watching with interest the
unfolding threat of the newest disease arrival
to our shores. The West African Ebola
outbreak is certain to grow larger in the
coming days. We need to keep our dear
military personnel in our prayers as some have
been sent to help in that region. May God
protect them. It seems the public (as usual)
has been given false information.
No
problems and unlikely events have become
stark reality. I am not a medical doctor, but it
seems to me that this thing is far worse than
our leaders are willing to admit. Be certain of
this: it is here; likely to escalate; and the truth
be told, we seem unable to deal with it.
I am a preacher however and I am reminded of
how people and the world look at sin. Like
Aids and Ebola, Sin not only can kill man
physically, but can kill him eternally. Death is
the evidence of universal sin on this planet.
All have sinned and come short of the glory of
God, and the wages of sin is death (Romans
3:23, 6:23). Sin and Death are universal
truths. These diseases are just a couple of
ways men die. No one except the Perfect Son
of God has ever escaped the eternal

consequences of sin. He is God and came to

earth and took on a body in order that He
might fulfil Gods plan and become the perfect
sacrifice for OUR SINS. In Him is no sin ( I
John 3:5) He took our sins on Himself in
order to save all who come to Him (Heb.
9:26). By the way, I love the rest of that verse
in Romans ...but the gift of God is eternal
life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (6:23).
This also is UNIVERSAL ETERNAL
TRUTH ! Thank God for sins Remedy!
Now, here is how to deal with sin and any
problem. First, the truth. Unless we admit
the truth that we are sinners and in need of the
Savior, we cannot be saved. Denial and
blaming someone else helps no one. Second,
claim the remedy. The precious blood of
Jesus saves us from sin. Apart from asking
Him to come into our heart, forgiving us and
giving us eternal life, we are lost and without
hope in the world. After all, He is the Great
Physician. Use what we know and find other
solutions that will work.
Third, quit sinning. God does not save us
and desire us to keep on wallowing and living
in sin (Romans 6:1, I John 2:1) What shall
we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that
grace may abound? The answer is pretty
definite: God forbid. The same Savior that

saves us can keep us. And if there is an
outbreak of sin, the Christian can go to Him
and confess their sin and He will forgive their
sin (I John 1:9). He is Faithful and Just. The
one word definition is separation. Christians
must separate from sin. Saved people are
changed people. Sick people are usually
quarantined or borders are closed to keep
spread to a minimum. If we knew God and
believed in prayer, we would not be confused
about these things. Last, deal with this
important issue carefully, with protection.
Christians are to help others, but not get
tangled up in the sins they seek to help others
to overcome. Sin and Death has no power
over the Great Physician. His resurrected,
glorified body is not limited as we are (as
human beings living on earth). We pull sinners
out of the fire, but try not to get burned in the
process (Jude 23). Combat disease with
adequate protection and protocol
May our Lord truly protect those good people
who are trying to help in this crisis.

But If Not
Standing in the Face of Adversity
By John Anderson
In early 1940 the British and their allies
sent a force of some 350,000 men into the low
countries of Europe to stem the tide of German
advance into France, Belgium, and Holland.
Caught in a brilliant pincer movement by the
invading German forces, the beleaguered
British Expeditionary Force was pushed back
to the beaches of the small Belgian town of
Dunkirk.
To everyones surprise, the Germans halted
their advance to regroup. As England and the
world waited for what appeared to be the sure
and certain annihilation of 350,000 men, a
three word message was transmitted from the
besieged army at Dunkirk. It read simply,
But if not.
The British people understood the biblical
importance of the cryptic message. It was a
reference to the Old Testament book of
Daniel, where Daniel and his friends chose
death rather than worship an image of the
pagan king:

If it be so, our God whom we serve is

able to deliver us from the burning fiery
furnace, and he will deliver us out of
thine hand, O king. But if not, let it be
known unto thee, O king, that we will
not serve thy gods nor worship the
golden image which thou hast set
up.Daniel 3:1718
The British Expeditionary Army, surrounded,
cutoff, and on the brink of destruction,
declared to Britain and to the world that even
in apparent defeat they were, in fact,
victorious. The message, more eloquent than
a sermon delivered in St. Pauls Cathedral,
galvanized the British people. In a matter of
hours, thousands of boats of every description
crossed the dangerous waters of the English
Channel. At the risk of losing their own lives
from enemy fire, they evacuated the heroic but
beleaguered army in what historians now refer
to as the miracle of Dunkirk.
The bravery of the Hebrew boys and the
British soldiers are wonderful historic stories
from which we draw great inspiration. In a
day where many are bowing down to culture,
societal pressure, moral degradation, and
secular religion, may each of us stand
compassionately in our communities with the
But if not spirit!
