M-U Public Library Welcomes Staff Members

The Milton-Union Public Library has two new
faces behind the counter Library Clerk J.D.
Woodward and Public Relations Specialist Joyell
Nevins.
Woodward, a graduate of Tippecanoe High
School, takes online courses at Ohio Christian
University for leadership in ministry. He serves
as a youth pastor at Christ Worship Center in Tipp
City. J.D. performs a variety of clerk duties, but
said, I especially enjoy shelving. I look at every
book I pick up and think Oh, whats this?
Nevins comes from the Weekly Record
Herald newspaper, where she has been editor for
the last three years and a reporter before that. She
Joyell Nevins
J.D. Woodward
is responsible for the Inspirational Fiction section
at the library. Joyell works with teens and Christian interns, Fellow Laborers with God, at Christian
Family Fellowship Ministry in Tipp City.
She is amazed at the amount of activity that goes on at the library and the resourcefulness of the staff.
Ive always thought of libraries as quiet, peaceful places. This place may be quiet, but its certainly not
peaceful theres always something going on! She works with the volunteers, and encourages those who
are interested to come and talk to her. There are many tasks that the library staff can continually use help
with especially when holiday events are just around the corner.
The library is located at 560 S. Main St., West Milton. For more information, call 937-698-5515 or
visit www.mupubliclibrary.org.

A U.S. military mobile laboratory designed to assess and combat

biological and chemical threats recently left for its first deployment
to Liberia, where a team of soldiers and scientists are testing for the
deadly virus Ebola.
The 1st Area Medical Laboratory, based in Aberdeen, Maryland,
was deployed at the end of October. Twenty-two soldiers, including
biochemists, microbiologists, and laboratory technicians, have been
sent on the mission.
The laboratorys commander, Col. Patrick Garman, son of Dale
and Judy Garman of Covington, has a doctorate in Pharmacy from
Ohio State University and in Epidemiology from the University of
Florida. Col. Garman said four groups of three were dispatched
across Liberia to test human samples for Ebola.
People should know their sons, daughters, husbands, and wives
who volunteered to be in the Army are great individuals, and its my
responsibility to keep them safe, Garman said. Its truly an honor
to lead them.

Covington Alumni
Foundation Announce
Board Changes

by Gary Godfrey

The Battle of the Inflatables

Im not a big fan of blow-up Christmas decorations. Let me tell you why. Yes, Im a
Christian, and its my opinion that Christmas should be celebrated for the Birth of Christ.
Now hold on, before you start calling me an Old Scrooge. Let me explain. Theres nothing wrong with Santa, Rudolph, presents, holiday cookies, or family get-together parties.
Just as long that everyone attending knows why youre celebrating.
Commercialism has taken over this wonderful holiday. Perhaps you havent noticed, but
theres definitely spiritual warfare going on in our country right
now with our enemies and our leaders.
What we really need are spiritual prayer warriors.
Ive always been fascinated by the Civil War that
started in 1861 and ended in 1865. One of the
most horrific battles was The Battle of
Gettysburg. It left approximately 7,000 corpses
in the fields around town. Family members had
to come to the battlefield to find their loved
ones in the carnage.
When you read about these battles I, for one,
can picture in my mind what the fields must
have looked like . . .
Driving to work each morning, I see the holiday blow-ups sprawled out lifeless on lawns,
just like the battles of the Civil War must have
looked.
Its actually a pitiful sight.
Laying flat are lifeless snowmen, reindeer, and Santa
Clauses everywhere. If we would take them all up and throw
them on one large field, it would look just like the Battle of Gettysburg.

WHIO Northern Bureau Chief Steve Baker

Draws a Full House at M-U Public Library
There was a full house at the Milton-Union Public Library on
Thursday evening, Sept. 25, as the community turned out to listen to
WHIO Northern Bureau Chief, Steve Baker. Drawing from over 40
years experience in radio and TV news broadcasting, Mr. Baker
entertained his audience with exciting and humorous stories from his
years in the business.
The New Friends of the Milton-Union Public Library were
pleased with the success of their annual program, and grateful to
Steve Baker for generously donating his time to the community.

Kids + Chalk = Fun at M-U Public Library

Wendy Heisey, childrens librarian at the Milton-Union Public Library, took advantage of a beautiful
afternoon and invited Story Hour participants to brighten the librarys sidewalks. While literacy skills and
develoopmental needs are integral parts of the librarys story times, learning can also be FUN!

Seth Canan & Austin Sherman Attend Buckeye Boys State Delegate Conference
Congratulations to Seth Canan and Austin Sherman on being selected by the Covington American Legion A.B. Cole Post 80 to attend the
annual Buckeye Boys State Delegate Conference held at Bowling Green State University this summer.
Seth Canan, a senior at Covington High School, is the son of Rick and Mary Canan. He was elected as both a mayor and delegate to the State
Party Convention. Canan was also able to share his music talents by playing at the city music festival. He especially appreciated the veterans
performing a retiring of the flag ceremony and sharing their pride and patriotism with the young men in attendance.
Canan is a CHS class officer, a Student Council member, and president of the National Honor Society. He has participated in cross country,
baseball, track, concert band, the school play, and various clubs. He has also been an Americanism Test Winner and a West Point Leadership
award winner.
Austin Sherman, also a senior at Covington, is the son of Tammy Terry and John Sherman. His roles at the conference included acting as an
assistant director of law and as a private lawyer. Sherman was most influenced by the simulated voting process for electing a governor, as he
will soon be voting in actual elections and realizes the importance of exercising that right as a U.S. citizen.
Shermans activities include chorus, play cast, Art Club, Drama Club, and FCCLA, for which he has been vice president and a district representative. He also plays community soccer.
Canan and Sherman did an excellent job representing the community of Covington as they learned first-hand some of the responsibilities,
rewards, and challenges of serving the government and becoming a great leader in ones community.
