1. Introduction
1.1 VAV Compact NMV-D2-MP with MP-Bus interface
You are sure to have heard of the Belimo VAV Compact Controller NMV-D2-MP. Conventional control
with a 0..10 V signal is still possible for integration into control systems. In addition the NMV-D2-MP is
equipped with the MP-Bus interface. The values for the volumetric flow and damper position can therefore
also be used. This opens up possibilities for new applications.

1.2 Fan control with static pressure

Today it is standard procedure to implement fan control via static pressure. The static pressure is kept
constant in the duct. The frequency converter which controls the fan is in turn activated by a pressure
controller with an 010 V signal. However, this means that pressure is not controlled according to
effective demand. Many VAV boxes therefore eliminate more pressure than is necessary. This naturally
results in interfering noise. There is also the difficult question of where to place the pressure sensor. It is
often situated directly downstream from the supply air fan. In addition the components required for
pressure control are relatively expensive.

1.4 Fan control according to damper position

With the MP-Bus, information on the effective damper position is now available. This means that the
damper position can be used as a parameter for controlling the fan. The damper angle is periodically
determined via the MP-Bus. The damper which is open the widest is used as a reference. The speed of
the fan is then reduced until the respective damper is in a range above 80. This enables us to control the
fan as required.

1.5 Comparison of fan control via static pressure or according to damper

position
When the fan is controlled by the static pressure, we control the fan along the horizontal axis. The
optimum operating point is not reached. The motor power requirements are therefore considerably higher
than during control based on the damper position.
Average savings of a VAV system with fan
control via static pressure:
45 kW 28 kW = 17 kW (38%)
5,000 h/a x 17 kW = 85,000 kWh/a
85,000 kWh/a x 0.06 = 5,100 /a
with fan control according to damper position
45 kW 23 kW = 22 kW (51%)
5,000 h/a x 22 kW = 110,000 kWh/a
110,000 kWh/a x 0.06 = 6,600 /a
Additional savings = 29%

2. MP-Bus integration

2.1 MP-Bus
MP stands for Multi Point. The MP-Bus is the Belimo master/slave bus. Up to 8 slaves can be connected
to a master unit. These slaves are MP/MFT(2) damper actuators, MP/MFT(2) valve actuators and NMVD2-MP VAV Compact controllers. Advantages include considerably reduced wiring expenses, a clearer
arrangement, substantially higher functionality and cost savings as well.

2.1.1 Sensor integration via MP-Bus

One sensor can be connected per MP/MFT(2) actuator. This can be a passive resistance sensor (Pt1000,
Ni1000 or NTC), an active sensor (e.g. with output DC 0...10 V) or a switching contact. This allows the
analogue signal of the sensor to be easily digitised with the Belimo actuator and transferred via MP-Bus
to the MP master unit, which scales the corresponding values.

2.1.2 MP hardware
The MP-Bus consists of the three conductors: AC or DC 24 V, GND and the MP communication
conductor. Supply and communication are in the same cable.

2.2 DDC controller as MP master for VAV controller

Belimo makes the MP specifications available to all interested manufacturers of DCC controllers in order
to implement corresponding MP interfaces in DDC controllers with regard to both hardware and software.
up to eight VAV Compact NMV-D2-MP controllers can be directly digitally operated through the DDC
controller with MP interface via the MP-Bus.

2.3 Belimo gateway MP/LonWorks UK24LON as MP master

for VAV controller
With the gateway MP/LonWorks UK24LON, up to eight NMV-D2-MP VAV Compact controllers can be
directly digitally operated via the MP-Bus - and integrated into a LonWorks network.

Principle of logic for speed control according to damper position

3.1 Principle of DDC controller with MP interface

Example: Systems with supply air VAV controller, exhaust air not controlled. The damper angle is
periodically determined by the DDC controller via the MP-Bus. The damper which is open the widest is
used as a reference. The speed of the fan is then reduced until the respective damper is open to an angle
of more than 80%. Fan control is therefore based on requirements and power is optimised (in the
example only the VAV controllers MP1-MP4 are shown).

3.2 Principle with gateway UK24LON and controller for LonWorks

Example: Systems with supply air VAV controller, exhaust air not controlled. The damper angles of the
VAV controllers are periodically determined by the UK24LON gateway via the MP-Bus and transferred to
the Lon controller via LonWorks. The damper which is open the widest is used from the position control
loop as a reference. The speed of the fan is then reduced until the respective damper is open to an angle
of more than 80. Fan control is therefore based on requirements and power is optimised (in the example
only the VAV controllers MP1-MP4 are shown).

3.3 Principle with NMV-D2LON

VAV Compact with integrated interface to LonWorks
Example: Systems with supply air VAV controller, exhaust air not controlled. The damper angles of the
VAV controllers NMV-D2LON are periodically transferred to the free programmable Lon controller via the
"SNVT_angle_deg" network variables. The damper which is open the widest is used from the controller
as a reference. The speed of the fan is then reduced until the respective damper is open to an angle of
more than 80. Fan control is therefore based on requirements and power is optimised (in the example
only four VAV controllers with direct interface to LonWorks are shown).
