Christmas: Whats Love got to Do With it?

Oh what's love got to do,
got to do with it?
What's love, but a second hand
emotion?
What's love got to do,
got to do with it?
Who needs a heart, when a heart
can be broken?
Tina Turner, Whats Love Got to Do This

Without even knowing it (or

maybe she did) Tina Turner in her
1984 song: Whats Love Got to
Do With It, was asking a deeply
theological question. It is the
same question that is central to
the saving work of Christ and our
human response. As we look, love
has everything to do with it.
For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only Son, that
whoever believes in him should
not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (ESV)
We often overlook this verse
because of its simplicity and our
relative comfort with it. It is the
one we learn at the earliest age,
and often recite the most. Yet, I
think we miss the power,
complexity, and promise of it.
Please take a moment and look
with me at the wonderful
sovereign Grace of God at work,
for all time.
For
When we see the "for" what we
should ask is "whats it there for?".
The reason was that there was a
problem, NOT a God problem,
but a human one, called sin that
grieved the heart of God. The fact
that there is even a "for" is
evidence of a love that knows no
height, width, breadth , or depth.
God
Right after the problem what do
we have? Our problems tend to

be places of periods, but here

God says, that this is not finished
and the brokenness of sin does
not get the last word.
For God, tells us that God and
only God could deal with this
problem. Certainly, we could not.
so loved
We often look at the "love" and
skip the so that lets us know
that this love is entirely different
than any love that I know. So
means to such a great extent
which allows us to see that this
love has a extends greater than
my our own knowledge. In fact,
Ephesians 3:19 tells us that this
love is the: the love of Christ
that surpasses knowledge.
the world,
When we read this sometimes we
think in terms of present world, or
the physical world. The Bible on
the other hand sees the world in a
far greater way. It speaks of the
vastness of the universe, and in
the same way the numbers of
hairs on your head.
The world is therefore
representative of those in it. This is
not just you and me, but those
that have come before and after
us. To quote another popular 80s
song, We are the World. Jesus
came to deal with your sin at the
cross, but also reconciled sin past,
present, and future.
that he gave his only Son,
According to Romans 5:8, but
God shows his love for us in that
while we were still sinners, Christ
died for us. God did what we
could not possibly do; what I
could not possibly do, give my up
own son. Yet, God initiated and
did what only He could do, but
the greater question is how?

The people who are being saved

are the worst of the worst, and the
gift being given is the most
precious of all, the only son, and
the only way this can be done is
through one who so loves.
that whoever believes in him
A senior saint once told me that
the whoever means all the anywhos and where-evers.
It is our crazy neighbors, the drug
addict, the alcoholic, the abuser,
the wayward husband, the
despondent wife, the prodigal son
or daughter, the greedy, the needy,
and all those who BELIEVE on
Him and are radically changed. I
have such a problem with those
who subscribe to a small gospel
that is only for some or just a few.
The Bible is clear that ALL are
called to, and considered
righteous at the cross of Christ.
should not perish but have
eternal life.
Remember: while we were still
sinners (Rom 5:8) we were still
perishing because the wages of
sin is death (Rom 6:23), but God
rich in mercy Himself made a
proclamation at the cross that,
none shall perish!
So, Tina Turner asked us:
Whats love got to do with it?
Everything.
For God, love is not just a second
hand emotion, but the active
agent of a rescue mission whose
goal is redemption for not just
some, but all. This is not just any
love, but Gods own sacrificial,
sin crushing, son sending,
salvation initiating, saving love for
all those in the world. The very
love manifest in the manger.
Share that love today with
someone!
