Computer Networks

After completion of this course, the students would be able to

1. Defining, using and implementing Computer Networks and the basic components of
a Network system.
2. Knowing and Applying pieces of hardware and software to make networks more
efficient, faster, more secure, easier to use, able to transmit several simultaneous
messages, and able to interconnect with other networks.
3. Differentiating the various types of network configurations and applying them to meet
the changing and challenging networking needs of organizations.
4. Defining and analyzing the circuits available for voice and data networks, their
transmission speeds (bandwidth), and how they are packaged for commercial use.
5. Definining the different protocols, software, and network architectures.
6. Defining the concept of local area networks, their topologies, protocols and
applications.
7. Analyzing why networks need security and control, what errors might occur, and how
to control network errors.
MCA-E14: Cryptography & Network Security
After completion of this course, the students would be able to
1. Understand Security: Attacks, Services & Mechanisms
2. Study of various security algorithm available for security and protection
3. Ciphering of plain text
4. Study of conventional encryption algorithm, key management issues
5. Cryptography and various encryption methods
6. Knowledge and implementation of hash function to messages
7. Digital signature and its importance in transaction processing
8. Concept of network security, directory authentication, e-mail
9. Viruses and their implication to business applications
10. Firewalls and network security principle

Program Description
Want to learn how to keep computers and company data secure? Our computer network security
training will give the student the skills needed. The student will learn how to install firewalls and
intrusion detection systems and to assess, analyze and respond to threats facing computer
networks.

Computer Network Security Program Objectives

After completing the Computer Network Security program, students will be able to:
1. Identify and describe the common types of security threats aimed at computer networks
and explain the typical techniques used by hackers and other non-authorized users of
network data.
2. Describe security solutions that can be applied across internal and external networks to
lower the risk of security attacks and eliminate exposure to viruses and hacking, as well
as implement employee security practices that keep data safe from internal and external
misuse.
3. Describe different network structures and identify the hardware and software solutions
that can be employed to create, protect, maintain, and repair each type of network.
4. Identify accepted network administration policies and procedures and determine which
elements of these policies and procedures are necessary to achieve compliance with
accepted standards and practices.
5. Define cryptography, describe the elements of the encryption process, and determine the
correct ways to encrypt data to best contribute to the overall protection scheme of
applicable network structures.

Purpose and Learning Objectives

The purpose of Course F21CN Computer Network Security is to provide a solid understanding of
the main issues related to security in modern networked computer systems. This covers
underlying concepts and foundations of computer security, basic knowledge about securityrelevant decisions in designing IT infrastructures, techniques to secure complex systems and
practical skills in managing a range of systems, from personal laptop to large-scale
infrastructures. The course structure is designed to provide solid foundations in the first half of
the course, and discuss concrete application scenarios in the second half.
Learning Objectives:

Extensive, detailed and critical understanding of the concepts, issues, principles and theories of
computer network security
Detailed and practical understanding of formalisms for specifying security related properties and
validating them using model checking
Critical theoretical and detailed practical knowledge of a range of computer network security
technologies as well as network security tools and services
Practical experience of analysing, designing, implementing and validating solutions to computer
network security challenges using common network security tools and formal methods.

Skills imparted:

Understand the concepts and foundations of computer security, and identify vulnerabilities of IT
systems.
Use basic security tools to enhance system security.
Develop basic security enhancements in stand-alone applications.

Pre-requisites:
