Teaching values in Schools: the reasons behind

Human values are intimately blended in every aspects of human life. They are
interwoven with our daily activities from small to large, informal to formal, and
internal to external. Values are the cognitive structure that represents the ideals of
life an individual holds, their taste, preferences, principles and the deportment of a
cognitive. Values are the productive cultural elements which mould the
components about the attitude of individuals, and of the members of the
community that holds them together. From culture to culture the values differ from
one another. But there are some core values which are universal and accepted
worldwide. Honesty, Compassion, Integrity, Forgiveness, Love, Knowledge,
Discipline, Faith and Leadership are some positive values practiced in all cultures
around the world. Every human being is born with neutral mindset, depending on
the environment, family, and the education a person receives his/her values get
shaped. Value education is the process of inculcating the values in the developing
psyche of children, so that they can be able to sense humanism, and a concern for
the well being of others around them. The accomplishment of this difficult task
would lead the people of this society to order, security and reliable progress. The
values like Honesty can strongly prevent damage to relationships with others and
personal self-esteem. Generosity is the value that can be described as the act of
thankfulness to others and self. It guides an individuals psyche to contentment; the
more we see our personal efforts impact others, the more we learn from the
experience of sharing. Generosity teaches individuals to know their limits and their
own selves. Similarly, grit teaches us to pursue long term goals despite the
difficulty of the situations.
Why should we teach values in school? The aim is to encourage young peoples
awareness to practice values in their relationship with the world they live in. It is
necessary to understand the values which are practiced in our society and convey it
to the students who are going to shape the future of our society one day. A
democratic society demands individuals with abilities to deal with conflicting
values and to take liberated decisions. It demands a critical faculty which has the
competence to determine based on the moral principles. Educators, teachers, and
parents are there not just to help the young ones to learn the values but also to help
them understand the making of the rules and values of a certain society. Educators

can help the students to practice the values and apply them individually in their day
to day lives. School holds a great importance in the cognitive development. Parents
create the base for this development, but school is the place that introduces the
students to the larger society and mankind. School has the power to shape the
cognitive development of students as an individual and as whole. For the
safeguarding and prosperity of the society and mankind schools should teach
values earnestly with the parents.
