FOREWARD
* O MIGHTY ALLAH!
All praise is due to Thee. There is none
worthy
of
worship
except
Thee.
The
magnificent state in which Thou wast, Thou still
remainst and wouldst remain so forever.

* O BENEFICENT ALLAH!
Thine choicest blessings be upon Thy holy Prophet
Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (SM), His Ahl-e-bait
(members of family), His companions and His
followers.

The sole purpose of compiling this book describing

the holy life and teaching of Shah Jahangir (III)
Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) is to enlighten the
people with the greatest illumination brought about
in the spiritual world by this greatest saint. This
humble creature wishes and prays that after going
through this holy book with due solemnity and
(3)

devotion, people might derive spiritual as well as

material blessings and thus enrich their lot both in
this world and hereafter. If such a study infuses, as
it must, a sense of reverence and obeisance
towards Hazrat Shah Jahangir Shamsul Arefeen
(QSA) and all that he thought and practised the
purpose of this small booklet would, to a great
extent, will have been achieved.
Hazrat Bashir Hani, a great saint has said "There is
a group of departed souls, whose remembrance
enlivens the hearts. Against these reverend souls,
there is another group of living person at whom a
mere glance deadens the hearts and kills the sprits.
A bad company is like a poisonous snake whose
very breath causes death". In the present age which
is so full of confusion and turmoil, the study of
books containing lives and teaching of saints and
great religious leaders are the noblest companions
to the troubled and forlorn souls. Other sources for
the survival and enlightenment of spiritual and
mental faculties are to pay visits to accomplished
Peer Murshid (Spiritual guide) whose even a
momentary company is said to be effective and
(4)

more valuable than any other form of worship

performed consistently for years at length.

Great care has been taken to assimilate and

corroborate the events and biographical details
from authentic sources. Very often the visitors to
the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jahangir
(III) expressed desire to have reliable record of the
Greatest saint's life and teaching.
Keeping in view the genuine desires of Shah
Jahangir's admirers and followers, this humble
creature, by the grace of Allah almighty, has
recently completed comprehensive and equally
authenticated biography of Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen
(QSA) entitled "Alasalul Musaffa" in Arabic
and "Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen Er Pabitra Jibon
Charith" (in Bangla). Now this small book has been
compiled with the idea of making it available to the
public at large, especially those who are very much
preoccupied with their normal pursuits and have
comparatively less time at their disposal to study
detailed and voluminous works.
(5)

The writer very humbly prays to Allah that his

efforts in the name of Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen
(QSA) be rewarded in that the readers achieve the
essence of truth and act upon it. That is the
acquisition of truth in a broad sense, is the
quintessence of Shah Jahangir's (QSA) teaching
and it was the truth for which the greatest Saint
strove unceasingly with the determination and
steadfastness, unique in character, unsurpassed in
magnitude and beyond the reach of common
people.

ANCESTRAL LINEAGE:
Whenever the laws of nature or the balance of
peace is disturbed through exploitation and
inhuman practices, the Supreme Lord of the
Universe sends down Saints, Sages and Dervishes
to guide and purify mankind. Likewise is Shah
Jahangir Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) who
brought the message of peace, love, humanity and
brotherhood through Islamic order and expounded
the humble mission, aims and objectives of Sufistic
teachings. He was the exalted most spiritual guide
commanding highest esteem among innumerable
vast
people
of
his
time.
The distinguished forefathers of this prominent and
renowned most sage were Fate mites and thus were
by generation connected with the Holy Prophet
(SM). His Highly enlightened ancestors came to
India from Arab. When the rulers of Delhi, after
conquering different states, proceeded to Bengal for
propagating Islam, 2 (two) esteemed Fate mitesages (named Boro Meah and Choto Meah)
(7)

accompanied them. They first stayed for few years

in Anwara of Chittagong and then finally settled in
Mirzakhil of Satkania. Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen
(QSA) was the dearest successor to these respected
Fate mites and thus belonged to the Holy
"Sayed"
family of holy Prophet (SM).
His reverend father Shah Jahangir Hazrat Fakhrul
Arefeen (QSA) who has written more than 150
books focusing different aspects of Islam during
His Holy life time (1276 A. H.-1339 A. H.) and His
grandfather Shah Jahangir Hazrat Shekhul Arefeen
(QSA) who has written more than 100 books in
different branches of Theology during his life time
(1229 A.H.-1302 A.H.) were highly renowned
Saints and most celebrated spiritual leaders without
any parallel in South East Asia.

HOLY BIRTH:
Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen Moulana Syed Shah
Mohammad Maksus-ur-Rahman Alias Toaha Miah
Sahib Qibla-e-Alam, the most reverend monarch of
(8)

the accomplished saints and the shining crown of

the exalted preceptors blessed this earth with His
holy advent on Monday, 1916 A. D. at the famous
and sacred village of Mirzakhil in Chittagong. He
(QSA) was the only affectionate child by his
reverend mother. Becoming only issue of his
reverend mother, offers significant indication of
divine resemblance to Holy Prophet (SM). Hazrat
Rasul-e-Karim (SM) also had no sister by His (SM)
respected mother. He (QSA) came into existence in
the sacred womb of His reverend mother on the
night of Holy Shab-e-Qadar, Monday, Ramadan 27,
1333 Hijri. The following morning Hazrat Fakrul
Arefeen, his reverend father and Pir-O-Murshid
(Spiritual Guide) conveyed this sacred glorious
message to the then present followers and devotees.
He also indicated to them "This son will be a rare
born saint of the world".

HOLY INFANCY:
He (QSA) was the fourth dearest son of Hazrat
Fakhrul Arefeen (KSA). Hazrat Fakhrul Arefeen
(QSA) indoctrinated Him (QSA) in the cradle while
(9)

he was only one and half year old and infused in

Him divine power and illumination. He could not
avail the holy affection of His reverend father for
long. When He was five and half years old Hazrat
Fakhrul Arefeen (QSA) left for eternity.

HOLY EDUCATION:
Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) had His elementary
education at home under the direct supervision of
His reverend father. After completion of the Holy
Quran and other elementary books of religion, He
(QSA) at the age of 15 left for Calcutta for higher
education. There He got himself admitted in
Madrasha-e-Alia, the most noted Madrasa of the
age. He studied hard and obtained distinction on
studies there. He (QSA) once himself said, "During
studies I had developed such spirit that I became
determined to be an eminent scholar like my
respected father and reverend grandfather." But He
(QSA) was not allowed to pursue studies for long.
He (QSA) received divine call to adorn the vacant
throne of the holy "Silsila-e-Aliya Jahangiria".
While He was in His mother's womb, His (QSA)
reverend father once predicted "This son will be
(10)

divinely bestowed with celestial knowledge and

erudition".

Ascension to the Holy Throne of The

Silsila-E-Alia Jahangiria:
Hazrat Fakhrul Arefeen (QSA) once declared to
His followers and devotees. " One among my sons
whom Allah the Almighty would choose and
select as Sajjada Nashin will, at the age of
twenty, manifest in Him the qualities, virtues,
manners, dispositions exactly similar to that of
mine as well as my reverend father and Pir-OMurshid. People will spontaneously speak out,
'This son accuratelu and exactly steides along
the foot print of His reverend father and
respected grandfather'. And he will become my
Sajjada Nashin, His spiritual learning will be
divinely accomplished by Almighty Allah"
1.
This holy prediction was widely known to all
His family members, relatives, Caliphs, followers
and devotees. To one's amazement, subsequent
happenings indicate unique materialization of the
(11)

holy prediction. People used to flock to Darbar

Sharif and were more and more impressed to see
the heavenly personality of Hazrat Shamsul
Arefeen (QSA) who had just crossed 20. In Him
there was a manifestation of divine virtues and
qualities. In virtuousness, righteousness and in all
other dimensions of His Holy Character, even in
physique and appearances, He (QSA) looked to
have become a live version of His reverend father
Hazrat Fakhrul Arefeen (QSA). As a result, all the
followers, relatives and accomplished Caliphs who
were aware of the holy predictions could sense that
Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) had then become
adorned with all necessary prerequisites to ascend
to the Holy throne of Sajjada Nashin.
At last the glorious day of coronation came after
passage of long 19 years from the date of holy
demise of his reverend father and Pir-O-Murshid.
Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) ascended to the
Holy throne of Sajjada Nashin and succeeded tghe
highest office of the Holy Silsila-E-Jahangiri on
Monday, the 19th Zilhaj, 1358 A. H. corresponding
to 1940 A. D. at the age of 24 during the Urs Sharif
(12)

of his venerable Pir-O-Murshid. Mankind and all

celestial bodies in chorus sang out "Marhaba-EaSayedana Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) Hazrat Fakhrul
Arefeen (QSA) once said, " Spiritual teaching was
mysteriously given to me by my reverend Pir-OMurshid after His Holy demise. I will also offer
such teaching to one after I leave for eternity." In
the Hashia (explanation book) of Mashnabie Sharif
(vol - 2, Page-180) it is said that "There are four
Awthad (the leader of the saints) at the four
different corners of the world (west, east, north,
south) through whom these four corners will be
eternally directed and guided". In the west there is
Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Alim (R. A.), Hazrat Sheikh
Syed Abdul Hai (R. A.) in the east, Hazrat Sheikh
Abdul Murid (R. A.) in the north and Hazrat Sheikh
Syed Abdul Qader Jilani (R. A.) in the south.
Among them who is dominating the east is
regarded as Hazrat Fakhrul Arefeen (QSA), the
second Shah Jahangir and the reverend father and
Pir-O-Murshid of Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA).
With regard to Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen's nobility
and magnificence, Hazrat Fakhrul Arefeen (QSA)
(13)

also remarked, He will succeed me as Sajjada

Nashin after my eternal departure will attain even
greater spiritual power and progress than me"
2.
This Holy remark by such as exalted
Pir-O-Murshid assumes the transcendental glory
and tremendous exaltation of Shah Jahangir Hazrat
Shamsul Arefeen (QSA), the greatest saint of the
world.

SPIRITUAL ATTAINMENTS:
Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA) was the most
exalted and greatest saint of His age. He all along
led a very strenuous life. He had voluntarily
undergone superhuman sacrifices and sufferings to
attain appeasement of Almighty Allah. In prayers
and worships His spiritual exercise reached the
peak of austerity. There was in Him clear
manifestation of divine virtues and qualities. He, in
fact held the most esteemed position in the domain
of spiritualism. He followed His reverend father's
Tariqa of Qadri Chistya and Abul-Ulayee and
Silsila-E-Jahangiria. He was the Gaus-E-Zaman
(14)

or the Greatest Saint of the age from whom other

saints received spiritual graces and favours. His
divine and God-gifted title was "Shamsul Arefeen".
He was generally known as "Shah Jahangir", a title
which He received from His reverend father and
Pir-O-Murshid. By following His advice and
instruction innumerable people achieved nearness
of God and got contented with the attainment
of
worldly
and
eternal
salvation.

HOLY CHARACTER:
It is beyond capacity of an ordinary pen to portray
such a superhuman character. Hazrat Shamsul
Arefeen (QSA), in virtue and excellence was a
venerable personality without any equal. He strictly
followed the command and prohibition of Allah
(Shariah), teachings of holy Prophet (SM) (Sunna)
and precepts and footprints of great least affinity
towards this transient world. His Holy person lived
a bachelor life but discarded monasticism.
Excellence of disposition is a notable characteristic
of His Holy life. His delightful and fascinating
(15)

nature used to captivate the minds of innumerable

followers, devotees and visitors. He was never
found rude or harsh on any issue or occasion. He
had always a charming, pleasing and smiling face
and His voice was always very soft and mild.
Amazingly, His holy person, unlike most of other
spiritualists, was keenly interested in modern
scientific development and used to encourage the
individuals in such education. He was very
generous. Many shelterless men got life-time
refuge in His holy "Khankah". His charity and
welfare activities towards development of the
individual and the society will remain ever
memorable to the people. Respect to the senior,
affection to the junior, love to all and annoyance to
none were a quotable aspect of His holy character.
As a result, anybody who happened to come to His
momentary contact had become His great admirer.
Vast masses had infinite esteem, reverence and
love for Him.

(16)

MIRACLES:
He was gifted with vast spiritual and supernatural
powers and many miracles were manifested from
Him. As an instance, a piece of thick cloud always
used to give Him (QSA) shade on the holy head on
His way to Madrasha and back. There are many
instances of His instant presence whenever His
devotees fell in danger or distress. In 1963 the then
Pakistan Government had a chance to offer Gilaf
Sharif (a piece of cloth that is given over the Holy
Qaba during Hajj). The Govt. had gracefully
decided to accomplish this holy task through this
greatest

saint.

Accordingly

Hazrat

Shamsul

Arefeen (QSA) was chosen as the Chief of Hajj

delegation and thus He performed holy Hajj as
Royal Guest to Saudi Govt. During the holy Hajj
also

He

had

miracles.

Strange Resemblance with Holy Prophet (SM)

Our most reverend spiritual guide Shah Jahangir
Hazrat Tajul Arefeen (QSA) said, "Monday was the
day when all significant and sacred events like holy
birth, holy prophet-hood, holy migration and holy
demise occured in the sacred life of Hazrat RasulE-Karim (SM). Similarly Monday was the day of
occurrence of all Holy events of Hazrat Shamsul
Arefeen's holy life like advent in reverend mother's
womb, holy birth, holy ascension as Sajjadanashin
and holy demise. Hazrat Rasul-E-Karim (SM)
appeared on the earth in the month of Rabiul Awal
and also departed for His eternity in the same
month. Similarly Hazrat Shamsul Arefeen (QSA)
was born in the month of Jamadius-Sani and left for
eternity in the same month. Such resemblance of
events indeed indicates a divine relationship
between
Hazrat
Rasul-E-Karim
(SM)
and
Hazrat
Shamsul
Arefeen
(QSA)."
(18)

HOLY DEMISE:
His holy being left for eternity on Monday the 24th
Jamadi-us-Sani, 1391 Hijri corresponding to 1971
at the age of 57. His holy divine self is rested in the
same sacred tomb beside the two exalted most
saints, His spiritual father and reverend grandfather
in His own village Mirzakhil Sharif in the district
of Chittagong. Here also Almighty Allah leaves an
indication of grand resemblance and similarity with
the holiest Rowja Sharif (Tomb) of Madina
Monowara where Hazrat Rasul-E-Karim (SM),
Hazrat Abu Bakar (R) and Hazrat Omar (R)
together take eternal rest. His sacred Rowza
(Tomb) has become a cherished place of pilgrimage
for vast multitudes of people of every religion and
community. People from Srilanka, Pakistan, India,
Afganistan, America and other parts of the world
visit His holy shrine during the annual Urs Sharif.
(19)

Now His most beloved Sajjada Nashin Shah

Jahangir Tajul Arefeen Hazrat Moulana Shah Syed
Mohammad Areful Hai Sahib Qibla-E-Kaba is
performing the Holy religious works of Silsila-E-

Alia Jahangiria quite astutely and innumerable

people are achieving nearness of God and deriving
spiritual favours and graces by following His holy
advice and instruction. May Allah bestow on us the
infinite favours and mercy of Hazrat Shamsul
Arefeen (QSA).
