OEC Benefits
of Fuel-Free Power Production
for Pipelines

The ORMAT® Energy Converter (OEC) is designed to

complement your compressor operation and generate
cost-effective electricity or additional compressor power:

• ORMAT units available from 500 kW to 7,500 kW

• Factory-integrated for rapid, easy modular installation

• Operation is automatic and unmanned

Produce MEGAWATTS
• OEC units include remote monitoring and control
from Heat
• Air-cooled condensers, no water required

THROWING AWAY!
• ORMAT organic motive fluid is non freezing and ozone-benign

• Design incorporates 35 years of field proven power system experience

• Cost-effective power is produced without additional fuel usage

• Turnkey design, supply and installation of modular systems available

• Financing optional

The power produced by the

exhaust from gas turbine driven
compressors along a natural gas
pipeline is dependent on the type
of gas turbine used and on site
conditions. OEC power output
for typical gas turbines is indicated
in the chart.
ORMAT® Energy Converter
for Gas Compressor Stations

T he ORMAT Energy Converter (OEC) is an air-cooled heat

recovery (bottoming cycle) power system. It converts waste
heat from the exhaust of gas turbine-driven compressors into
electricity for sale to local utilities or for additional compressor
station power.

The OEC, like steam power plants, is based on the Rankine

Cycle, but uses a non-freezing, ozone-benign organic working
fluid, instead of steam. The system is referred to as an Organic
Rankine Cycle (ORC). It is well suited for operation with gas
turbine exhaust heat sources.

Gas Compressor Station How the ORMAT® Energy Converter Works

The self-contained, fully automatic ORMAT

Energy Converter (OEC) produces grid-
compatible power. Its working fluid is selected
to optimize power output for specific gas
turbine exhaust streams. Thermal energy in
the exhaust gas is transferred to the OEC’s
vaporizer by a nonflammable heat transfer
fluid flowing through the Heat Recovery Unit.
The OEC working fluid is vaporized by the heat
transfer fluid.

The resulting pressurized organic vapor drives

a special turbine, which is coupled to the
generator or an additional compressor. After
expansion, the turbine exhaust vapor flows
through the recuperator, is condensed and
recycled by the motive fluid pump.

Since 1976: OEC units power 62 remotely

operated gate valves along the 800-mile
Trans-Alaska pipeline.

Unattended Distributed Power

along 4,000 Miles of Pipelines

The ORMAT Energy Converter (OEC), a Closed Cycle

Vapor Turbogenerator (CCVT), provides highly reliable,
low maintenance power for remote unattended
applications along pipelines. OEC units are used to power Since 1968: Telecommunication networks

Argentina.
and telecommunications links on over 4,000 miles
(6,000 km) of pipelines.

With over 200 million turbine hours of field-proven

reliability, many OEC units have been in operation for
over 25 years! The self-contained OEC supplies 200 to
3,000 Watts continuously under the most severe
environments with near-zero maintenance. OEC units
use a wide variety of locally available fuels including
natural gas, LPG, kerosene, jet fuel, and diesel fuel. Since 1978: Dual OEC provides reliable
power for communication at offshore gas
production facilities in the Adriatic Sea.
